"Where ya headed love?"

Buffy turned to the familiar voice. "None of your business, Spike," she

said, turning back and continuing down the road.

Spike brought the car's passenger window level with her and slowed to her

pace. "What if I want to make it my business?"

"I'd probably stake you. Besides, when has a Slayer's travels been your

business?"

"Since I decided I wasn't going to kill you unless I absolutely needed

the blood."

"How long have you been following me?"

"Since the day before yesterday."

"Why?"

"I decided that I would rather have a brassed off Slayer in front of me

than behind me. Then it would be harder for you to sneak up on me in the next

town."

"How far is the next town?" In the distance Buffy could only see

darkness and the occasional light.

"About 40 miles."

"You could be in and out of there before I even reached it."

"Well, I decided to be nice for once."

Buffy realized that this was probably her only chance to get a free ride,

so she got in Spike's car. <If he tries to start anything, I can always stake

him> she thought. They rode to the next town in silence. When they reached

the town, Spike pulled into a diner and got out of the car.

"What are you doing?" Buffy asked, also getting out.

"Thought I might buy you a meal, try to make up for before. Besides, if

you had money, you wouldn't be walking," the vampire said.

"What if I said I was walking to save money and keep in shape?"

"I've been following you. You haven't stopped for food or anything in

the past three days. I don't think you have any money. Why are you passing

up a free meal?"

"Because we're supposed to be enemies, not friends."

"Doesn't that apply to Angel too?"

"Angel was different!"

"How? He didn't try to kill you when you first met?"

"That was part of it."

"Just because a demon doesn't try to kill you on first means he has a

heart of gold."

"I know you surely don't have one."

They sat down. A waitress came over. "What can I get for you?" she

asked.

"The young lady would like a hamburger, well done, french fries, and a

Coke," Spike said. "I don't want anything."

"Okay," she said. "I'll bring the soda out in a minute."

"Spike!" Buffy hissed.

"What?" he said innocently. "I thought most Americans like hamburgers."

"I do like hamburgers. I just didn't expect you to order for me."

"Angelus must have thrown you for a loop when he lost his soul again.

From what I knew, you trusted men."

"I do. I just don't trust you."

The waitress put the plate down in front of Buffy. "Can I get you

anything else?" she asked.

They both shook their heads no. As the waitress walked away, Buffy

started eating. A quiet fell over them as she ate. Buffy hadn't realized how

hungry she was. She had gotten used to the hunger pains a few days ago when

her money ran out. It felt good to eat.

When she was done, Spike said, "Feel better?"

She nodded.

"Where are you headed?"

"Don't know. Just going."

"Think you'll go back?"

"Don't know."

"Why are you running? Unless you have some demons inside, you left them

back in Sunnydale."

"I was having some problems and I had to get away."

"What about your Watcher?"

"I don't know. Sure, I trust him, but the problems are between me and my

mother."

"And you're hurting everyone else because…? I always took you for one of

those types that looks out for everyone else first."

"Okay, the attitude doesn't fit the vampire. What happened? Did Dru

dump you or something?"

"I didn't figure you to be telepathic too, but yeah, she did. Ditched me

just before I started following you. She was screaming for me to turn around

and take her back to her precious dolls and her precious Angelus. When I

wouldn't, she had me stop the car and she got out. Last I saw her, she was

walking the other way."

"You left her?"

"No, love, she left me when Angelus returned. She's just physically

leaving me now." He paid the bill and they went back outside. "Come on,

let's go find some motel rooms."

"I thought you slept during the day."

"Usually, but I didn't want to lose you and end up in a pile of dust down

the road."

"How do you travel in daylight?"

"The windows are darkened so the sun can't get in. A little space is

left so I can see."

They arrived at a motel down the street. Spike went in to get rooms. A

few minutes later he came back out with a wicked grin on his face.

"There's only one room, Slayer," he said, "with one bed." She started

to protest. "I don't think either of us wants to sleep in the car, so I took

the room under the pretense that we were newlyweds on our honeymoon." Buffy

got out of the car and Spike got a suitcase out of the trunk.

"What's that for?" Buffy asked.

"The pretense that we're newlyweds. Besides, you haven't changed in

days. I've learned from experience that mortal women have a thing about being

clean."

Buffy sighed and went into the room. <It would feel good to get a

shower, clean clothes and a good night's sleep. >

She pulled a T-shirt and a pair of boxers out of the suitcase and went

into the bathroom when they got in the room. The shower felt great. She

toweled dry when she was done, dressed, and wrapped a towel around her hair.

Spike was lounging on the bed when she got out.

"Did you eat?" she asked.

He nodded. "There's a hair dryer and a brush on the dresser and

toothpaste and a toothbrush by the sink. I guess you want me to get a shower

too," he said.

"That would be nice," she replied. "Especially if we're going to be

sharing the bed."

He got up, picked out some clean clothes, and headed towards the

bathroom. While he was taking a shower, Buffy dried and brushed her hair and

brushed her teeth. He came out as she was getting into bed. His blond hair

was damp and his T-shirt showed faint signs of muscle. He smiled faintly as

he climbed in next to her. <He can be really sweet and adorable> she thought.

<What am I thinking? He's my enemy. But still, he isn't that bad. >

<What's going on? > Spike thought. <First I lure her into my car with

the intent of a getting a meal, and now we're sharing a bed in a motel. But,

she isn't half-bad. I wonder how Angelus felt when he kissed her. >

"Spike?" Buffy asked.

"Yes, pet?" he asked, turning on his side to see her better.

"Did you love Dru?"

"I had an attraction to her. When I first met her, she was so helpless

and weak. It might have just been that I had never really felt a woman's

touch or kiss while I was alive. And did you love Angelus?"

"When he was Angel I did. He was caring and sweet and he looked out for

me. When he lost his soul, a part of me still did, but as time went on, it

lessened a bit."

Buffy's skin tingled at Spike's closeness. When she looked in his dark

eyes, she felt like he was drawing her in. He gently caressed her face and

her skin shivered at its coolness, but she didn't pull away. <If he's going

to kill me, he better do it now. > She thought. <I'm unarmed, and I don't

really have anything to live for. >

To her surprise, he brushed a strand of hair out of her face. He lowered

his face until it was about an inch away. His closeness sparked something in

her. He quickly stold a kiss. Whatever had started to spark in Buffy,

ignited into a flame. Something in his eyes told her he felt the same way.

He moved closer and studied her face for a moment. Then he bent his head down

and gently brushed her lips with his. The kiss was soft at first, but became

more passionate. It was sweeter than anything either had ever known.

Reluctantly, Spike pulled away. He lay down on the bed and put his arm around

her.

"Good night, Slayer," he said.

"Good night, William," she said.

"Okay, okay. Good night, ducks."

"Good night." She snuggled closer to him. They both fell asleep content

and happy, hoping the love and unusually alliance would last when they both

woke in the morning.
