Previously on Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Spike tells Buffy that something big is brewing (over a montage of the Istanbul and Frankfurt girls being killed by the robed figures), Xander invites Spike into his place while Buffy tells them Spike is different, Dawn encounters her Mother's spirit, Cassie tells Willow that bad stuff is looming (over a montage of Spike hitting on, walking with, and biting blonde Bronze patron), Buffy learns of Holden being sired by Spike.

Nighttime, immediately after the events of "conversations with dead people", Buffy wakes Xander at his place with her arrival. Xander asks if something's wrong, to which Buffy says she's looking for Spike.

In the basement of... somewhere, Spike casually hums an old folk tune while digging what appears to be a grave in the dirt floor. The Blonde that he seduced from "Conversations" lays lifeless against a wall. Spike pauses his digging, reaches over, picks her up, drops her carelessly into the freshly dug hole, then begins to hum the tune again calmly as he starts to bury the dead blond.

Opening Credits: nothing new.

"London, England" reads the title screen (with a brief shot of a busy London street) as we see a man enter a study-type area, carrying a briefcase and reading a book. Setting down the book, he glances at the floor and sees a tipped table with books and a broken vase scattered on the floor. "Nora?" the man calls as he gets worried and crosses into the next room to find a dark haired, dressed in black girl laying face down, a small pool of blood is comign from near her head. The man bends down to investigate and notices a knife wound in the center of her back, just as he hears a noise behind him. A robed figure appears almost out of nowhere and attacks with an ornate, curved dagger. The man blocks the dagger blow with his briefcase, then bats the robed figure aside with it. Running over to a wall with swords on it, he grabs one, but is quickly taken out by another robed figure who pops out from behind a corner and stabs the man in the back. The man falls next to the dead girl.

"Buffy?" Willow says as she rushes in the Summer's front door. "She's not here..." says Dawn from what remains of the family room. Willow is shocked to find the entire room such a mess and rushes over to a tired, shakey Dawn who sits on the ground, clutching a cushon. Willow asks her what happened and then checks her over to see if she's hurt, noticing thatt she's cut. Dawn says she's all right, then says "I saw Mom." Dawn begins to explain how she saw her Mother, but Willow tells her that it wasn't real, that she saw something strange too, and it was this "big bad" that they know is coming. Dawn continues to try to explain and believe that she saw her mom who was there to give her a warning, but Willow is worried and questioning.

At his place, Xander talks to Buffy, trying to analyze the situation with Spike in a cold, "CSI" manner, studying the facts unbiased. He wonders if Spike could have sired this vampire (Holden) like Buffy says, but Buffy says she doesn't think so, bringing up the pain chip. Xander counters, saying that the chip didn't stop him from hurting Buffy before. She says that the chip is definitely working, she's seen it, but Xander wonders if he's the faking. Buffy is confused and worried, not wanting to believe Spike could do such a thing now, saying that he's different. Either that or he's acting very well.

In walks Spike through the front door, disrupting the conversation. Buffy and Xander are awkwardly silent as Spike asks them what's up, then he notes the awkwardness and says it's ok, not for his ears anyway. As Spike heads off to bed, Buffy stops him, trying to casually ask him how his night was. Spike says it was ok, then ask her the same, questioning if she "bagged any baddies", acting genuinely interested. She says yes, just one, a vampire, a former aquaintence: Holden Webster. Spike looks sympathetic, saying that must have been tough for her. He then says he's gonna turn in before he drops, says goodnight in passing to Xander, and goes to his room, closing the door. Xander gets up and notes how calm and cool Spike acted when Buffy mentioned Holden, wondering what was up. Buffy says it's getting early, she should go and check up on Dawn, and asks Xander if he'll keep an eye on Spike for the day, but Xander turns her down, saying he's got work. Buffy says they've gotta find someone to keep an eye on him and not let him leave the house until they find out if he's killing again...

"uh huh... No way, Harris" argues Anya, standing in Xander's living room. Xander opens the blinds to reveal it's day, and he slowly gets his things together for work, sporting a business suit. Anya continues to argue, saying she wouldn't have come if she had known Spike was killing again, but Xander says they dont' know that for a fact. Anya asks if they've searched Spike's room for clues, saying that most killers keep trophies of their victims like heads and such. Xander says he didn't think of that and gets ready to head out, saying she'll be safe in there, with plenty of sunlight to hide in. Anya continues to argue, asking why he doesn't supply her with a means of defense like a crossbow or a flamethrower. Xander says he doesn't want Spike to suspect anything and tells her if Spike should go out, just to let him go and call Buffy for the heads up, then says that she'll be fine. "I'd better be, because if I get vamped, I'm gonna come back and bite your ass..." she calls to Xander as he heads out the door. "Wouldn't be the first time" he snarks back, smiling.

Willow slowly closes Dawn's bedroom door as we hear Buffy come in and race upstairs, calling for Dawn slightly paniced. Willow calms her down in the hallway, telling Buffy that Dawn's ok, just tired and in bed. Buffy asks what the hell happened, and Willow answers "This big evil that has promised to devour us? Well i think it's started chomping." Buffy questsions why it started with Dawn, but Willow says it started with both of them, then says that this "thing" knows them, making them think that they were talking to people they knew. Willow tells Buffy that she was visited by someone who supposedly had a message from Tara, then tells that Dawn actually saw Joyce. A short silence follows as Buffy let's this sink in, then Willow continues to tell of how convincing the messages and messangers were, that they lies they spoke were very convincing. Buffy gets lost in thought, muttering "lies..." Buffy then tells Willow about Holden saying Spike sired him two days ago. Willow becomes confused, questioning if that's even possible. Buffy shakes her head, not knowing, as Willow says it might be another fakeout from this "big bad", but Buffy says it seemed real and she wants to be sure. Buffy has to witness Spike's actions for herself to be sure.

Commercial Break: Plastic! Better than glass cause it bends... yep, we BEND!

Daylight has slowly shifted across the room as Anya looks nervously out the window. She gets up slowly inwardly debates on whether to do something.

Slowly she opens Spike's bedroom door, stake in hand, quiet as possible. She sees Spike asleep in his bed (yes, no shirt, ladies), and crosses over to his dresser on the side of his bed. She opens the middle drawer, snooping for clues. Finding nothing, she then sees Spike's pants on the foot of his bed and examines those, again finding nothing. Onto a pile of clothes next to the bed, she bends down and pats down a shirt, then starts going through his jacket, then she notices him stir and turn over in bed. She pauses, makes sure he doesn't notice, then turns her attention back to the jacket, only to have Spike quickly grab her arm in surprise! "Anya... do be specific and tell a fellow just exactly what you're doing here?" Spike says. Mouth hanging open in shock/surprise, Anya slowly starts to get the wheels a turning for a convincing lie: "Well... Spike... I'm here obviously... for... um... sex."

"Beg pardon?" Spike asks, confused but intrigued.

"You and me... here and now... let's go... let's... get it on you big bad boy." she says, totally NOT sounding at all convincing.

Spike questions the stake in her hand, which she says is for the kinky factor. She then continues her real bad acting job, saying she couldn't forget their brief time together and she wants it again, but the entire time spike is looking less interested, more uncomfortable. Finally Anya straddles Spike inbed and says "take me!", going in for a passionate kiss, but her head ends up on an uninterested neck. Spike pushes her back and gently, with tact, lets her down, saying he's tempted, but it's not right. Anya's act turns sour, with her actually being hurt by being pushed away. "i'm Fat! Either that or the haircut" she comments, but Spike shakes his head, saying he thinks she looks fine, that it just feels wrong. Anya now gets annoyed, saying that soulless Spike would have had her half way to happy land by now.

Dusk/dark comes over Sunnydale as Anya sits in a chair, slighly annoyed and hurt, thumbing through a magazine, as Spike exits his room, buttoning up his shirt. He apologizes if he hurt her feelings, which she sighs at and says it's fine. He then says he's got things to do and leaves. Anya picks up the phone, dials, and says "It's me, he's left."

Nighttime on a Sunnydale street and the night life has the area busy. A man plays a bouncy tune on a harmonica as we see Spike walking closer. As Spike passes the old man, the harmonica's tune changes to that of the folk song Spike was humming earlier. It reverberates in his head and he becomes entranced by it, starting to hum it almost as if hypnotized by the song. From around the corner, we see Buffy following in pursuit, keeping a fair distance from Spike, but still within view. She witnesses him talking to an unknown woman from a ways away. The woman laughs at something Spike says, then flirtingly leans into him, nuzzling him. The two walk off together, arm around waist, as Buffy tries to follow, but she soon loses them in the crowd.

"So, what kind of name is Spike?" The woman asks. Spike is silent as she asks if she's gonna have to guess. The two walk into a side alley and the woman is doing the full on flirting with him as he smiles sinfully, still silent. They grow closer and closer as Buffy still searches for them amongst the crowd. The two begin to lustfully kiss and neck, and Spike nuzzles her neck, then he pulls his head back as if to... you know, but he sees something which freezes him. Buffy comes walking into the alley as Spike gets a surprised look on his face. Buffy walks up coldly, then smiles "You know you want it.... you know I want you to..." she says, daring him. Spike looks at the woman, who is oblivious to Buffy's presence, and then puts on his game face. The woman screams, but too late, as Spike buries his head into her neck. She struggles and screams, but then is quickly silenced as we see Buffy smile evilly and say "there's my guy."

Commercial Break: Windex makes it SHINE!

"Now... doesn't that feel better?" says Buffy, still smirking, as Spike turns towards her, his mouth dripping with blood. He absently lets the woman's limp body fall to the ground as he suddenly gets a confused, hurt, paniced look on his face. He runs by Buffy and off into the night as Buffy's gaze follows him. Suddenly her face morphs into his! "How could you use a poor maiden like so?" morpho-Spike smirks.

Back at Xanders, Spike is violently uprooted from his bed, being thrown on the floor. "Did you kill her?" Buffy demands, standing over him. "The girl last night." Spike doesn't know what she's talking about, but she is highly pissed. Buffy tells him that she saw him go off with the woman, but lost them and didn't see the end result. Spike takes offence, asking if Buffy's following him, but Buffy demands answers, wondering if he killed and turned the woman. Spike says that he just talked to her, nothing more. Buffy doesn't believe him, which Spike questions where Buffy is getting these ideas, saying that she knows he can't hurt others. Buffy nods in disgust "the chip." "No, not the chip. Not the chip, dammit! You honestly think I'd go back to the end of the underworld to get my soul and then... Buffy you honestly think i can live with what I did... it haunts me. If you think I would add to the body count now, you're crazy. " Buffy questions why he's out late trolling for women then. Spike smiles a little, saying she's jealous. Buffy shakes it off as Spike continues, saying that it's bugging her to see him with other women, and that to get back at him she makes up the lies that he's turning people. Buffy starts to tell Spike that Holden said he sired him, but Spike interrupts: "Told you what?that i go out? yeah, i talk to people. to women. Talk to them because i can't... talk to you."

"oh, Spike, stop it."

"As daft a notion as soulfull Spike the killer is, it is nothing compared to the idea thatt another girl could mean anything to me. This chip, they did TO me. I couldn't help it. The soul i got on my own, for you. So yeah, i go and pass the time, with someone. But that's all it is, just time. God help me, Buffy, it's still all about you."

Buffy brings up Holden again, saying that the vampire she killed last night said that Spike sired him. Spike wonders how Buffy could believe him, but Buffy argues that she saw Spike last night and that he didn't look lonely, he looked on the prowl. She then questions whatt they did. Spike says they talked, and that's it, he can't remember anymore. Buffy doesn't believe that he can't remember, and even now Spike starts to look confused, wondering why things are a blur. She continues, saying that he probably did it, seeing as how he's been doing strange things like talking to invisible people lately. Spike scoffs, saying that the only accusation she has is from a dead vampire. This challenges Buffy to go and find some more proof and she leaves, with Spike looking slightly confuzzled.

In the summers home, Willow is researching on her laptop as Dawn, Buffy, and Anya clean the place up from the previous Dawn adventure. Buffy is looking for evidence, wantting proof that he didn't vamp anyone. Dawn wants to know why she's questioning everything, especially when they know that the big bad was lying to everyone and the vampire may not have been telling the truth about Spike being his sire. Willow says it's possible, but it's also possible this big bad's words had truths within. Buffy says they can't assume anything, they need hard facts. Anya says it's simple, look for an increase in deaths with neck injuries, but Willow has already searched and found no such increase. She does notice, however, 10 or so recent missing persons reports, all young, mostly girls. Dawn says that pretty much settles it, it's true what the vampire said. Buffy says it's not certain, and the only one who knows for sure is Spike.

Spike pulls on his jacket, ready to go out, and notices something in the pocket. He pulls out a pack of cigarettes, which sends him into flashback mode back to him picking up the pretty blonde girl at the Bronze, then her laying dead on the ground. He looks inquisitivley at the pack but continues to head out.

Spike heads out of his room and Xander rises up quickly to block his exit, saying that Buffy said for him to stay put. Spike says he knows why Buffy wants him to stay there, but he has to go out to find proof that he's innocent. Xander starts to list to Spike the reasons he won't leave, but upon saying "one", Spike blasts him with his fists, sending him outcould to the ground. Spike grips his head in pain for a moment, but then shakes it off and heads out.

Amy Mann's tune starts up as she stands on stage at the Bronze. Spike sits at the bar, questioning the bartender about the blonde he was with, but the bartender knows nothing. Spike then walks up to the catwalk, trying to survey the situation for anything familure.

Xander is on the phone with Buffy, telling her that Spike has left, having hit him. Buffy asks if Xander knows where he's headed.

From above in the catwalks, Spike sips from his flask and scans the crowd. A dark, exotic woman comes up from behind and makes small talk, obviously flirting. Spike tries to ignore her but she presses. Spike tells her that he's not the type to be pressed, and the woman says he probably wishes she'd slip into something more comfortable. Spike turns to look at her and she is in Vamp face! He jumps up, shocked, but she is still playful, wondering if he wants to pick off the crowd one by one or just start a panic and block the doors? Spike is still shocked as the vamp asks why he's acting all innocent, he wasn't before when he was biting her. Spike's face is full of horror as she continues to eye the crowd, wanting to split up a couple she sees on the floor below. "No, you're lying..." Spike says and he kicks her. The fight begins as the woman yells out 'That all I was to you? A one bite stand?" Cuts back and fourth between Amy Mann on stage, rocking it out, and Spike and the gal vamp fighting up on the catwalk. Lots of punches are thrown, but finally Spike gets the upper hand and grabs a wooden tube out of the vamps hand and stakes her with it, sending her flying over the balcony. Just as she hits the ground, she turns to dust in a real cool explosion. This startles the crowd and Amy Mann momentarily, bringing the music to a halt, but Amy quickly recovers and continues as Spike looks down from above, very confused and worried.

Outside the Bronze, Buffy walks up to the doorman/bouncer and asks about a guy, describing Spike. the bouncer knows the guy, "A Billy idol Wannabe", and says he's there all the time, each night leaving with a different gal. Buffy questions how many, which makes the bouncer question if Buffy's a girlfriend, then he tells her to drop this guy, he's a real player.

Spike rounds a corner in a back part of the Bronze, headed for a payphone (Amy Mann slowly exits down some stairs, commenting "Man, i hate playing vampire towns." on her way out.). Spike phones someone and says "Hello? it's me. I'm seeing... i think i'm remembering. I think ive done some very bad things."

Buffy walks outside the Bronze, cell phone up to her ear, asking where Spike is.

Spike tells her he has to see him and gives her the address of a house. Buffy says she'll meet him there and hangs up. Spike hangs up and turns to face... himself! Morphy-Spike says "shouldn't have done that, it's not time yet. You're goin against the plan. i thought we could make it work."

Commercial break: Joe's Credit Card. Now with the low introductory rate of 56.9% interest!

Inside an unknown house, Spike opens a door to a basement and tells Buffy that it's "down here." Spike goes down the stairs but Buffy stays at the top, being cautious. Spike sees this and doesn't blame her, but then he turns to face Morphy-Spike, who says the Slayer should be there, but it could be fun to see what happens. Spike says to morphy-Spike that he's not here. Buffy slowly decends the stairs and asks what Spike wants to show her. Spike says he's been remembering the girl she saw him with, and the one before that, and that, and he thinks he killed them, and slowly walks over to the open dirt floor, saying he buried them there. Buffy is in shock and asks why, but equally as shocked is Spike, who says he doesn't know why. Just then, from behind, Morphy-Spike sits on the stairs and starts singing the folk tune heard earlier in the show. Spike turns slowly to listen, starting to get hypnotised, as Buffy sees him acting strange. Spike suddenly turns, game face on, as Buffy raises a stake to her defense. Spike grabs the stake out of her hand, throws it against some glasses on a shelf, which shatter. Buffy hits Spike, sending him back, but he grabs a large shard of glass and swings at Buffy with it, cutting her arm. A small fight insues, during which Buffy is trying to talk Spike down, saying he doesn't want to do this. Buffy starts to win the fight, but then up from the ground before them hands start bursting up! The vampires buried in the soil are coming to life. Buffy punches Spike off of her, back towards where Morphy-Spike sits. The vampires attack Buffy, who tries to fight them off, but soon they get a hold of her and restrain her for Spike. Morphy-Spike continues the hypnotic speech, saying he knows what he wants. Spike, game face still on, gets up and approaches Buffy, snarling. He sniffs her face, her neck, and slowly is drawn to the blood gash on her shoulder. He slowly goes in to lick at it...

Flashbacks to Spike biting a woman, biting someone else, carrying a woman's body.

Spike pulls up from Buffy's shoulder in normal face, confused.

Flashbacks to Spike digging a hole in the basement floor, victims lying behind him, and him biting another victim.

Spike stands and looks at Buffy, slightly dizzy, coming down from his bloodlust. "I remember..."

Rapid fire flashbacks to Spike biting various victims, digging, throwing the bodies into graves...

Suddenly he reels back in horror, a look of pure shock on his face. Spike stumbles back onto the ground as Buffy breaks loose from the two vampires that restrain her. She grabs a shovel handle and in a real brief but cool fight scene, quickly dusts one, two, three, four, five, SIX vampires in sucession!

"Now she's gonna kill you. Sorry, you lose mate." Says Morphy-Spike, bending over a cowering Spike.

Buffy notices one more hand coming up from the ground. She grabs it and pulls up yet another vampire, and older lady. "Sorry mam, it's my job." she quips as she jams the shovel handle into the vamp, dusting it.

Buffy turns and walks over to Spike, who looks up at her with a pitiful glance. He leans back, opens his up his jacket, and presents himself for staking "Do it fast, OK?" Buffy looks down at him. "He said you'd do it!" Spike says at her non-action. "who said?" Buffy asks. "Me... Me... i saw him... i saw him the whole time, talking and singing." Buffy asks what spike is talking about, which Spike answers embarassed that he doesn't know, he can't remember. He turns and yells at the stairs "make is so I forget again! I did what you wanted!"

Buffy looks around, sensing something. "There's something here." She then looks down at the shovel handle she holds and tosses it aside, which promps Spike to beg "No, please, I need that, I can't cry this soul out of me! It won't come. I've killed. I can feel every one of them." Buffy says there's something playing with them all. Spike asks her what, almost pleading, but Buffy admits she doesn't know. "Help me? Can you help me?": Spike asks her. "I'll help you" she answers the distraught vampire.

Spike sits silently, tired, wrapped in a blanket, as Xander, Buffy, Anya, Dawn, and Willow sit in the Summers dining room, wondering what to do next. Buffy says he was out of control, which Xander comments that that's the best type of houseguest to have, an out of control serial killer. Buffy says she wants Spike around, which makes Willow worry, especially with a vampire's bloodlust. Buffy tells them that Spike was in contact with this unknown evil more than any of them and she wants to keep him around, not only to help him, but more because he's the most direct link to the evil they have. Xander objects, saying it's too dangerous, but Buffy says this thing they're dealing with is dangerous, and it's only getting worse.

The door bursts open in the London office. Giles rushes in, looking concerned. He looks around and finds the girl laying dead on the floor. "Oh dear god..." he says as he feels for a pulse. "Robson, are you hear? Robson?" Giles calls out the name, looking around, and he spots the man in another room, laying on the floor, apparently dead. Giles kneels by him, frustraited, but then he awakes with these ominous words to his friend: "Gather them... it has started." Giles says he understands, while from behind we see a hooded figure slowly approach, a battleaxe in hand. The figure (who's face is now somewhat seen) pulls back to swing hard at Giles' back...

Grrr... Arrrg...
