James Marsters at GenCon 2001
updated Sept. 10, 2001

James Marsters proudly proclaims, 'I'm a dork!'

On Aug. 4 and 5, 2001, James Marsters appeared at the GenCon Game Fair in Milwaukee, Wisc.

He was extremely gracious to the fans, and he will always have a special place in our hearts because of that.

A COMPLETED transcript of his Q&A is now available.  Also, you can listen to a 2.6 meg QT .MOV clip of James singing at the Q&A.

If you have any photos from GenCon to contribute to this page, contact alanesue@aol.com We'll also put up a link to your GenCon Web page!

Here's a great candid photo of James, and nice and large, too!

Answering a question at the Q&A
Chuckling at a comment from the audience.
James has a very sweet voice, and it was a treat to hear him sing at GenCon.

James tries to decide how to answer a question at the Q&A.
The Q&A was a very informal session.
He was forthcoming in many of his answers.
We could have listened to James play the guitar all afternoon.
Another guitar shot
On August 18, James appeared with Juliet Landau at WizardCon in Chicago, Ill. Here are some of Carol's photos from that event.

Saturday's autograph session brought happiness to those who made the line cutoff and were able to meet James.
James sings a few bars for the fans in the autograph line.
He enjoys "Spike Club" shirt by HLynn, who is also a BAPSter.
BAPSter Kelly, the very last person in Saturday's line, gets an autograph.
James gets comfortable at the Q&A.
Fans just loved James' easy laugh
Who doesn't enjoy a mini-concert in the middle of a Q&A?
James knows that the fans like to hear him sing, and he'll try to accommodate them if someone brings a guitar along.

Thanks to BAPSter Brenda for making this JPEG possible. That's me shaking the hand of James. :) <fangirl mode> For those who may be wondering, his hand was large, soft and warm. </fangirl mode>
Here is BAPSter Kelly in the autograph line on Aug. 4. She was the very last person to get in that night. The hundreds of people behind her were out of luck and extremely disappointed.
Despite the fact he flew to Milwaukee directly from shooting the show in LA and gone without sleep for more than 24 hours, James took the time to personally greet everyone in line and spend a bit of time talking with him or her.
Here he is taking a look at the wonderful cake that BAPSter Missi made for him.
BAPSter Clairel gets her chance at an autograph. She got a "Hello Cutie" signature, which made some of us extremely jealous. :)
More than 50 fans wished James a Happy Birthday through greetings that were compiled in a scrapbook. BAPSter Jacqueline put many hours into getting it just right, and James was impressed with the effort.
James looked down and saw that he was being asked to sign a piece of wood. He and BAPSter Tara share a laugh. She'll be adding the artwork later.
Action!Spike had has moment of fame at GenCon. Before James arrived for the Aug. 5 Q&A, Action!Spike was posed on the lectern. Suddenly, a bunch of flashes went off, as many fans decided that even a miniature replica of the real thing was worth a photo. Later in the real Q&A, the crowd called James' attention to the action figure, and James got a startled look to see him sitting there like a star! James spoke for about two hours at the Q&A. So many flashes went off, they had to ask people to stop taking photos. Those of us who were there will never forget what a truly warm and funny person he was. Thank you James!!!! :)
Here's a scan of my autographed photo. Thanks to BAPSter Deanna for giving me permission to print out her shot of James singing at 14 Below so that I would have a unique photo for James to sign.

James entertained the autograph line with a song clip from Nirvana while folks waited.
BAPSter Alane gets her chance for an autograph and tells James that her name is pronounced as "You go bowling on a lane." He politely chuckled.
It was a long wait for the Q&A, but fans of James were not deterred. They even set up their own numbering system and let themselves into the auditorium to wait when GenCon personnel were nowhere to be found.
Those attending the Q&A were treated to two songs from the man. One was from Tom Waits and the other was an original composition. One day, James may release his own CD!
James really enjoyed the birthday autograph book presented him by Jacqueline.

James tried to have at least a short conversation with every fan in the autograph line. He also held at least one baby. Talked to fans' friends on cell phones. And was a genuinely great guy all around.
Everyone definitely enjoyed taking a good look at James' lovely smile, which we really didn't see much of in Season 5.

For those of us who have never heard James sing -- other than clips from the Internet, the songs during the Q&A were quite a treat
James thought very carefully about how to answer some of the questions.
Although weary from a lack of sleep, James kept plugging away in signing autographs.
