Poor old Angel, they gave him his own series, but he still mopes around looking broody. That would be on account of his being a 240-year-old vampire given back his human soul (and human conscience) by a gypsy curse, and vampire + soul = broody vampire. Also part of the curse being that if he knows true pleasure in this world (i.e. sex, although as far as I'm aware a nice cup of tea won't do it), then he loses his soul and becomes Evil Angel again. Now Angel fights evil, and occasionally is evil. I also should mention that he happens to be in enternal-type mutual love with Buffy, and obviously Angel + Buffy - sex = broody Angel.

Presently he's relocated to Los Angeles (spot the pun there?), in an effort to stop him and Buffy shagging, and to remove the plot impasse which happens when the love interests can't be love interested, so to speak. The question is now - whither Angel? He is attempting to atone for his sins as Angelus, with the vague goal of becoming human. Which, when it happened, he turned down. And now he and Buffy are on different networks it seems the vague prospect of them getting back together and opening up, for example, a small cafe in the suburbs, are ever more remote. Different cities and a hundred year-old curse pale in comparison with US Network TV rivalry. But, in the words of Joss Whedon: "Will they get back together? This irritates me greatly, because it's clearly impossible for them to get back together because they're BOTH GAY NOW!"
