Anya has to be one of Joss Whedon's best creations. Having lived for some time as a female vengeance demon (a sort of radical feminist from Hell, exacting horrible revenges on men), she became trapped in the body of a Sunnydale teenager. She was unable to free herself, or get her powers of boil-and-horrible-skin-disfigurement inducement back. However, this wasn't all of her troubles. As well as being a teenage girl in appearance, she began to have the usual desires of an 18 year old girl as well, and thus fell in love/lust with Xander, a fact he was very uncomfortable with; until, that is, he realized that it meant she wanted to have sex with him.

Anya has essentially taken over some of the space Cordelia once took up; the somewhat self-interested character, only making a pretence of really caring about anyone else. Except for Xander, that is.

Anya is also a bit of a moral grey area - is she evil, is she good, was she evil and is she now good? The morality of disembowelling men is somewhat up to interpretation - Anya, after all, was born sometime in the 10th century, a time with very different moral ethics, when maybe it wasn't so bad for a girl to get a bit of witchcraft together to protect herself from the likes of Olaf, Anyanka's marauding, raping and pillaging somewhat boyfriend. Add to this a thousand years as a demon, Anya has an unusual outlook.
