+GILES+
Giles:
I'm not supposed to have a private life?
Buffy:
No. Because you're very, very old and it's gross.
Never
mind poor old Angel, what about poor old Giles? Created from a stereotype
of the British man, he would be forced to have no sex life whatsoever.
In another TV series that would have been Giles' lot in life. Thankfully,
probably partly because of the actor who plays the character, Giles isn't
a total stereotypey type person by any means. The bookish librarian image
is a facade hiding a dark side... yes, he watches TV.
Stereotype subversion aside,
Giles is the man with the books, former Watcher to Buffy, and now just
an ordinary out-of-work librarian, demon researching aside, that is. His
main function is to try and identify various demons and spirits, with varying
success, to try and find some simple way of dealing with them. But seeing
as that simple way tends to be Buffy hitting them a lot, it's a wonder
why he bothers.
Still, Giles is
a vital part of the holy Quadrinity (Buffy, Willow, Xander,
Giles, in that order), as was reaffirmed in the Season 4 finale.
Equally his record collection is as encyclopedic as his book
collection, only presumably with less demonology involved.
