Er ist das jüngste Kind der Familie. David hat noch zwei ältere Schwestern Bo und Beth. Seine Familie hat Vorfahren aus Italien und der Tschechei. Von dort kommt auch der Name Boreanaz her. Sein Vater ist Entertainer, der in Clubs, Theatern und im Fernsehen auftritt. Zu Schule ging David an einer renommierten Privatschule in Philadelphia. In seiner Jugend spielte er Football. David war Wide Receiver und Defensive Back. Er arbeitete hart und war ein erfolgreicher Schüler. Sein Berufswunsch war Profi - Footballer zu werden. Doch durch einen Sprung verletzte er sich schwer am Knie und musste so das Footballspielen aufgeben.

Nach seinem Abschluss 1987 an der "Malvern Prep", fing er dann ein Studium am Ithaca College in New York, im Bereich Film an. Er wollte nach dem Studium in der Produktion arbeiten da er fand, dass Schauspielerei ein schwieriges Geschäft ist. Viele Schauspieler haben die unterschiedlichsten Jobs, doch leben die meisten nicht von ihrer eigentlichen Arbeit, der Schauspielerei. 1991 machte er seinen Abschluss am College. Danach zog er nach L.A., um eine Anstellung in einem Produktionsteam zu finden.
Doch bemerkte er bald, dass er größere Chancen hatte, einen Job vor der Kamera zu bekommen als dahinter. So spielte er in Werbespots mit. Und auch bei "Eine schrecklich nette Familie" durfte man ihn schon Als Kelly Bundys Freund bewundern, in der Folge: Die Bundys im Kino... Aber er war auch Anstreicher, parkte Autos und machte andere kleinere Jobs, um sich über Wasser halten zu können.

Schließlich bekam er auch kleinere Rollen in Kinofilmen. Doch waren diese meist so klein, dass er kaum in den Credits auftauchte. Außerdem hatte er noch immer keinen Agenten. Er suchte sich Theaterarbeiten, diese dienten zur Verbesserung seiner Fertigkeiten und förderten seine Sicherheit beim Schauspiel. Drei Jahre arbeitete er am Theater. Es war ihm aber klar, dass er in der falschen Stadt war, wenn er weiter beim Theater bleiben wollte. Dafür war New York weit besser geeignet, als L.A. Doch er blieb in Los Angeles.

1996 bot ihm dann auch tatsächlich ein Agent an, ihn zu vertreten. Dieser hatte auch sogleich einen Vorsprechtermin für eine neue Serie für ihn. Schon am nächsten Tag fand dieser dann auch statt. Es sollte nur ein kleiner Part werden, der in den ersten Episoden auftaucht. Der Name seines Charakters den er spielen sollte war Angel und die neue Serie hieß "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer"! Am 10. März 1997 ging die erste Doppelfolge der Serie auf Sendung. Die Rolle des Angels war anfangs auf sieben Folgen der Serie vorgesehen. Doch die Wirkung, die der Charakter auf die Zuschauer ausübte, änderten diese Pläne. Angel wurde in der 2. Staffel mehr und mehr eingesetzt und schließlich auch in die Stammbesetzung aufgenommen. Aufgrund des großen Erfolgs bei "Buffy" entschieden sich die Produzenten aus Angel eine eigene Serie zu machen. Die Spin-off Serie "Angel".
In seiner Freizeit treibt er gerne Sport, wie Hockey, Baseball, Tennis und Golf. David liest gerne in seiner Bibliothek, die vorwiegend Bücher zum Thema Film hat. Von 1997 bis 1999 war er mit der irischen Sozialarbeiterin Ingrid Quinn verheiratet. Die Scheidung war für David eine äußerst schmerzvolle Zeit, in der er sich mit Selbstvorwürfen quälte. Er sagte einmal zu diesem Thema bei einem Interview: "...ich habe sehr unter der Scheidung gelitten, und ich habe Angst davor noch mal eine Liebe zu erleben, die so wehtut..."
2000 hat David seinen ersten Kinofilm gedreht, in dem er die Hauptrolle spielt. "Valentine" ist die Verfilmung des gleichnamigen Bestsellers von Tom Savage. "Valentine" feierte Anfang Februar 2001 in den USA seine Premiere.
