Saturday (Part 2)

by Nighthawk

You know how they always say sequels suck? Well, except for a few. Let's run them down: Empire Strikes Back (well, in all acutality, part of a trilogy...but work with me for a moment. k?), The Godfather Part 2, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo...um, well, you get my point.

Let's just say I was damned tired at this point and get on with it, shall we?

We got to breakfast around 9am and ate while one of the waitresses chastised Hippie for spending $12 on herbal sweetener. I think her exact words were, "Twelve dollars for sweetener? Sh*t, if I'd just steal a bunch of equal from here!" Needless to say we laughed. Wouldn't you?

The Q&A sessions didn't start until 12 noon so we headed back to check out the dealer room. Notice I said "room". Singular. I had hoped to walk into a grand expanse full of Buffy/Angel paraphenalia. No dice. However, there was some decent stuff there and it killed the time.

Iyari, Clem and Robin were signing all day in one room so we made our way there first. The line wasn't too long but someone came to us and asked if anyone wanted Robin's autograph. We said we did and he took us out of line and straight into the room. Myth was the designated shirt presenter so she went first to everyone. She did such a great job! Mac, don't be surprised if you get one of these people posting here by the 20th! Robin was extremely thankful that we took the time and effort to make these shirts (which were personalized for each guest) and present them. After dropping $20 bucks (yeah, you heard right) for Robin and Amber's autographs (she wasn't there but he had some pics of him and her that were already signed by Amber), we moved to Iyari's table. Again Myth presented the shirt and Iyari saw the personalization and seemed very moved. Again, I got another big hug from her (Kennedy the Vampire Slayer...c'mon people!) and some more pics. All the girls embarrassed me by saying I was in love with her because she pinched my ass. There was NO pinching! More like a caress as I said. So she got very flustered and told a story about how Sarah told her to pinch James' ass one time on the set. She wouldn't do it so Sarah grabbed her hand and made her grab James' ass! LOL! After Iyari, we went over to James Leary. I'll just say that until I met Andy Hallett on Sunday, James was one of the funniest people I had ever met in person. He's so outgoing and you can just imagine the things Clem says while he's talking. He was very pleased with the shirt (esp. after telling him what NSACCC meant!) and honestly said he would try and stop in if he could. However, he was having a rough time of it since he was so hung over from the night before. I seem to recall him saying something about "the hair of the dog." Funny, funny guy.

Well, the highlight of the day was fast approaching. I had endured hours upon hours of "Spike" talk and was just ready to have it over with by now!

The Q&A started with Robin. He answered questions and did a few skits and impersionations. All in all he was very funny and I enjoyed being able to hear him speak.

Next up was James Leary. He had to sit down because he said he didn't know if he would make it through it standing up. hehe...that's what you get, buddy! He was still very gracious and humble. All weekend I couldn't believe how open and accepting of the fans these people were. It really gave me a new respect for them. Well, James didn't really fill us in on any spoilers. (pointed look at Gabe) but did say to watch this Tuesday for a little Clem action.

The bad news of the day came before Iyari came on stage. Andy Hallett had missed his flight and wouldn't be arriving until around 5pm or later. Bummer. So they let James Leary and Iyari go for longer than normal to compensate.

Let me say this to preface this next section. When Kennedy came onto Buffy along with the other SITs, I couldn't stand her. I wanted her gone. After this weekend, I want her to have her own spinoff. She's so nice and was very comfortable with everyone especially considering this was her first con. She was a little hyper when she first got on stage but by the end of the weekend she seemed to have gotten the hang of it.

Now on to the Main Event. People were waiting (most of them were patient) as James finished an interview that had been scheduled by his agent. As soon as he came through the door it was pandemonium. Flashes going off everywhere. People screaming. He took it all in stride. He immediately started answering questions and I must say, the majority of the questions were very well thought out and James took time to formulate an answer for each one. He took time with each person who asked a question (even my wife...she asked how big the sock from season 6 was. LMAO!)

Our very own S4E got up on stage and presented him with a framed version of the "Thank You James Marsters" ad and a shirt from the pediatric aids foundation (is that right, S4E?) where they donated the extra money. I can honestly say he was so blown away by the ad and all of the fuss it caused in LA. He said that you wouldn't believe that amount of attention it garnered in the business.

After James was finished, the began setting up for the autograph session. They announced that Andy had arrived and would be signing autographs but not have a Q&A session on saturday. But, whoever missed him would be able to go the next day to obtain an autograph.

Like I said earlier, it took about 2 hours or so to get to the table with James. However, since S4E had been up on stage with him, they allowed us to sit with her in the front row (about 10 feet from James) until our row was called. We got great pictures and quite a bit of video. It was really neat to be able to see and hear how he interacted with everyone. And I can't stress enough how kind and thoughtful he was with everyone who came through. He answered questions and gave everyone personal attention. Be it a handshake, a look or a quick pose for the camera. He was adamant about people getting good pictures and being able to speak to them. I asked where we should go eat during our visit to LA in a couple of weeks. He immediately looked up and said "Chaya Venice, no doubt. On main street. The place is fabulous." I also told him I had done a few preliminary mock ups of the Thank You ad and he was very grateful to everyone who worked on/donated to that.

As we made our way out, we went to our rooms to freshen up before dinner. Off to dinner we went in H4S' HUGE van (see part 1 about contents of a good movie). This thing could carry all of HMC to DragonCon if need be. A place by the name of Frank & Pauly's was the site of what was to be one of the funniest dinners I have ever sat through. It's hard not to laugh when people are staring at you because a bunch of fine women are referring to you as "Sultan." Not that I'm complaining! Dinner was wonderful and hilarious and all you can eat Italian. What else does one need? If we weren't friends before, we became true friends over dinner.

As we arrived back at the hotel, it was getting dark...pushing 10 or so. We couldn't find a good place up front so we parked in the back where the kitchen/ballroom area was. As we were making our way into the doors, Andy Hallett was in a room there doing a small Q&A before the karaoke contest. We stopped in there for a second and then were going to go get some things out of our rooms when Dusty came out of the next door and said "James was just in there and he's heading out the back!" We all took off running to where H4S' van was parked. Sure enough, out walks James!!! He wasn't really looking around and we didn't want to get all freaky (at THAT point, just wait...) so we sorta just hung out while he got into a white blazer. As soon as he got into the blazer everyone was like "GET IN THE VAN!!!! GET IN THE VAN!!!! GET IN THE VAN!!!!!" Well, after a mad dash to get everyone in the van, we pulled another Mission: Impossible manuever. We followed him down the street (keep in mind speeding and screaming our heads off the entire time!) and his driver tried to lose us, or throw people off by pullling into a gas station and doubling back. Well, H4S, not one to be outdone, went through the light and whipped the van into, of all things, a cementary and whipped it back out and floored it! Myth ends up on the floor of the van and I'm in the front seat trying to find the damned seat belt! Well, we see them up ahead and they make a left into another hotel parking lot right across the street from the convention hotel! We pull in and Myth is all "FOLLOW HIM!!! FOLLOW HIM!!!!" But H4S WIMPED OUT AGAIN!!!! (love ya, hon! LOL) Needless to say, we felt like the LAPD chasing another infamous white SUV.

After that, we were pretty much spent. We came into the karaoke just as the final person was performing. Andy Hallett and a couple of other people were judges. After the winners were announced, Andy, Robin, one of the hosts and James Leary performed (I know you'll love this Ott!) "I Want It That Way" by the Backstreet Boys! It was absolutely hilarious! They barely got through the song!

Well, they were all going to stay for the dance and Andy was going to sing some more but as he was coming off stage, a bunch of people rushed them and they ended up leaving and not coming back. Not to blame them at all. That was inconsiderate of those fans to do that.

We stayed around a bit for the dance but were so wiped out that we all retired by 2am.

On to Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!!!!
