-> Oakland SlayerCon 2004 Q&A Notes

Clare Kramer
By Kirsten

- Clare started by thanking everyone and said she really enjoyed being at the Con.

- Clare said she always knew she wanted to be in the arts but thought she’d be in dance. Then puberty hit and she discovered that she liked food. Clare studied acting at NYU then started auditioning her butt off.

- The most challenging and frustrating thing about portraying Glory was that she’d never worked on TV prior to the role of Glory. Clare didn’t know where the season would go and didn’t know that Glory was a god or about Ben. So Clare had to figure out how to do the character justice without knowing where the character was going.

- The thing that Clare liked most about portraying Glory was that the writing was so well done and was “freeing.”

- Clare loved that she’d been asked back for the 7th season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. How the writers unfolded the season determined whether or not she was asked back.

- Clare’s favorite role was a touring “The Miracle Worker.” Clare played Helen Keller and loved doing it. Clare also loved playing Glory. Clare didn’t like her character from “Bring It On” (Courtney) but loved filming the movie.

- Scene with Glory and Spike (where she beats the crap out of him): Clare loved showing the angry side of Glory, that Glory could be affected by something.

- Clare directed children’s theatre in NYC and loved it. She would consider doing it again.

- When asked if she’d like to be on any other current TV shows Clare complimented the work being done on some of the cable-only TV channels and specifically mentioned that she’d like to appear on “Six Feet Under” or “Nip/Tuck.”

- Clare was asked whether she liked TV, stage, or film the most and said that TV reaches more people, that film allows the actors to tell a story quicker and cleaner, and that stage allows the actors to interact with the audience. Clare prefers film or stage because there is less typecasting than in TV.

- Kirsten asked Clare about the physical challenges in performing “Bring It On” and “Buffy.” With “Bring It On” the actors were brought to a month-long training camp with cheerleaders who had no acting experience. Everyone trained cheerleading moves from 9 - 5 (with an hour off for lunch) and then trained from 7 to 10 (endurance, weight lifting, etc.). According to Clare during the first week of the training camp the actors couldn’t sit down properly because they were so sore.

- On “Buffy” it was different. Clare had an “amazing” stunt double who taught Clare the moves for stunts (between takes, during lunch breaks, etc.). So there was some prep work, but not a lot (not like “Bring It On”).

- If Clare had one superpower she’d like to be able to speak every language.

- Clare’s audition for Glory was 2 pages of dialogue without any additional (background) information. Clare had recently seen “The Shining” and was impressed with Jack Nicholson’s mood swings and tried to replicate that with Glory.

- Clare thinks she’s typecast now as “the bitch” which she doesn’t mind because it’s interesting to have an opinion. Clare thinks that everyone in Hollywood is typecast.

- Clare was asked which directors she’d like to work with. Clare replied that she’d like to work with Ron Howard, Cameron Crowe, Quentin Tarantino, and Steven Spielberg. Clare loves Ron Howard’s films because they are so touching.

- Clare was asked about her wardrobe as Glory. Clare loved the little red dress (it was Prada) but hated the purple lace dress. According to Clare the leads (and people who have been on the show the longest) get their wardrobes chosen first so sometimes Clare would be lower on the priority list which sometimes lead to fewer options for her wardrobe choices.

- Fiat asked Clare if she’d ever broken a heel. Clare replied that she’d never broken a heel, but after working on Buffy she can do anything in heels now. Some of Clare’s drag queen friends now ask Clare for advice on how to do things in heels.

- Clare was asked about Glory’s minions. Clare heaped praise on the actors who portrayed the minions because of their work, dedication, and getting the “raw end of the prosthetic deal.” Clare loved having minions and torturing them. One of Clare’s favorite minion moments was the bathtub scene and she really ate the chocolates and drank the mimosas.

- Clare was asked about her most embarrassing moment shooting Buffy. It happened in the hospital scene where she was fighting the Scoobies. Clare was wearing a thin-strapped dress, fighting, fighting, fighting and then she felt kinda chilly. Clare looked down and saw that one of the straps had broken and her left boob had fallen out of the dress. Clare said that the only thing she kept saying was, “My boob fell out! My boob fell out!”

- Clare was asked about her first day on Buffy and she related it to the first day of senior year at a new high school. It was scary but everyone was welcoming. Because Clare had never worked on a TV show before so she wasn’t sure what to do so she’d just start walking around during her lines and that was bad. The photographers had to tell her to warn them when she was about to move so that they could move the cameras. Also, at one point Sarah Michelle Gellar put her hands on Clare’s shoulders and moved her to get Clare out of Sarah’s light. It wasn’t done in a mean or condescending or bitchy way, just matter of fact.

- Clare ended her Q&A by thanking everyone. This was her first con in the states and she loved the experience.
