-> Oakland SlayerCon 2004 Q&A Notes

Anthony Stewart Head (Sunday)
By Kirsten

- Tony started out by stating “for the record” that his withdrawal from other Cons wasn’t always about work commitments. Sometimes it’s about the Con staff screwing up, then the staff compound the problem by using “work commitments” to cover their mistake up.

- When asked about any plans for upcoming albums, Tony replied he had lots of ‘plans’ (chuckle). Tony explained that he’d done “Music for Elevators” because he was in Los Angeles without his family and it gave him something to do. Tony also complained that record companies were really annoying and promised that he’d get around to doing another album -- eventually.

- Tony is really enjoying life right now.

- Tony was asked about “Once More With Feeling.” He liked his song and Spike’s and thought the whole episode was a blast. When Tony found out they were going to do a musical for “Buffy” he said his first thought was, “Fuckin’ hell, we’re doing a musical.”

- Tony was asked about the ‘Taster’s Choice’ commercials. Originally the commercials were shown in the UK for “Gold Blend.” Tony pitched the idea of doing the commercials in the US to the Nestlé executives and the execs didn’t pick it up until a year later. The commercials led to lots of work in the theatre in the UK and had a similar effect in the US. Eventually the commercials were pulled because the new head of Nestlé was a born again Christian and the woman in the commercial couldn’t have had a divorce.

- Tony was asked about working with people on “Buffy.” He liked working with Robin Sachs (Ethan Rayne) and loved working with James. Tony asked to do more scenes with James. Tony’s favorite interactions were with Sarah Michelle Gellar, though.

- Tony liked playing the Fyarl demon (“A New Man”), although Joss didn’t like the way Fyarl Giles chased Maggie Walsh down the street. So Joss demonstrated (waving his hands over his head, very ape-like), Tony did that, and that’s what made it into the episode.

- Fiat asked Tony about killing Ben (end of season 5) and saving Buffy from having to do it. Tony said he loved doing it and loved that Giles had gone through an extraordinary journey. Tony also loved that in the Buffy-verse nothing ever happened without repercussions.

- Tony was asked about how he played Giles after Jenny Calendar’s death. Tony said that Sarah Michelle Gellar helped him to play Giles - hurting on the inside but pretending he wasn’t hurting on the outside.

- Tony was asked if he was sorry that Giles didn’t get more action. That made Tony giggle quite a lot (hee, hee, hee! - that’s how he laughs, BTW) because at first he thought the person meant fighting-action then realized the person asking the question meant nookie-action. Tony said that it was important to the Giles character that Giles have inner turmoil. If Giles was getting laid all the time there’s no inner turmoil, though.

- If Tony could have one superpower it would be flying. According to Tony it “would be fuckin’ great.”

- Tony thought the episode “Band Candy” was great fun.

- Tony talked a bit about Tilley Farm, the farm he runs with his partner Sarah. They have classes on the Tillington touch and a website: http://www.tilleyfarm.co.uk

- Tony ended his Q&A with 2 songs - “Can’t Stand the Rain” and “Sweet Transvestite” from “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
