At the Bronze, the gang is discussing plans to rent a limo for the Homecoming dance. Buffy's not sure if she wants to go, but Scott asks her to go, so she agrees. Afterwards, when goes to visit Angel, bringing him blood to drink, she tells him she has a new boyfriend, and although she will help him regain his health, shešs moving on.

But the next day, Scott dumps Buffy, claiming shešs too distant. As she stands there, in the school hallway, two German brothers watch her through high-tech binoculars. In a compound, Mr. Trick and a man in a wheelchair watch the video feed, and identify Buffy as a targetŠ Mr. Trick has put together "SlayerFest Œ98", an event where an elite groups of killers are to go after Buffy and Faith. The competitors are the two Germans, Lyle Gorch and Candy, his new wife, a hunter, and Kulak, a strange, yellow spiky demon.

Meanwhile, competition gears up at school too. Buffy learns that she missed the photo sessions because Cordelia was too distracted by her Homecoming Queen campaign to let her know, and gets angry at her. The two yell at each other and Cordelia tells Buffy shešd like to see her win a crown. Buffy answers that she actually will run for Homecoming Queen and will win.

That night, Willow is trying on a long black gown for the Homecoming dance when she sees Xander in a tux. After she compliments him on his look, they start dancing, to see whether Willow can dance in her gown. Then, they kiss passionatelyŠ and break away, stunned, denying it ever happened.

The next day, Buffy holds a strategy meeting with Willow, Xander and Oz, but finds out that theyšve all agreed to help Cordelia. So, on her own power, she resorts to low blows, pasting her posters over Cordeliašs, bribing students into voting for her. Cordy retaliates by bigger posters and bigger bribes, and the competition escalates into warŠ Buffy blackmails Willow into showing her the database she made for Cordelia, so she can get an edge. Willow, feeling guilty about A) kissing Xander and B) abandoning Buffy to help Cordelia, obliges.

As Buffy and Willow talk, notably about the plans for the limo, the German twins are listening and taking good noteŠ

When Buffy finds out that Cordelia has resorted to money bribes to win votes, they argue once more and call each other nasty names. That night, Willow and Xander try to get Buffy and Cordy to forget their differences: the night of the dance, the limo comes to pick up Buffy, but instead of finding Faith on the back seat as planned, she finds Cordelia and a note telling them to work things out.

However, the limošs driver is not who they thinkŠ The two Germans, thinking they have both the Slayers, drive deep into the forest. When Buffy and Cordy get out of the car in their gowns a video recording of Mr. Trick awaits them, giving them thirty seconds to run for their lives. The girls happily oblige, and are nearly killed by the hunter. But, having been distracted by Buffy, he stumbles into one of his own bear traps; Buffy questions him and finds out what is going on and who is chasing them.

As Willow, Xander, Faith and Giles wait uneasily for Buffy and Cordelia at the Bronze, the two girls barricade themselves in a shack and call Giles to let him know whatšs going on, leaving a message on the answering machine. However, they are attacked by Kulak and must flee. Outside, they dodge a missile fired by the Germans, which helpfully takes out Kulak.

At the dance, Faith takes it upon herself to punish Scott for dumping Buffy. As hešs dancing with another girl, she walks up to them and tells him that the itching rash should go away as long as he keeps using the ointment. It works Scottšs date draws back from himŠ

Giles stops by the library and gets Buffyšs message, but is knocked out by the Gorches before he can do anything about it. Buffy and Cordelia arrive, only to find Lyle and Candy helping themselves to the weapons. Buffy is knocked out, but succeeds in staking Candy with a spatula. An angry Lyle goes after Cordelia, but she scares him off by making a scene an putting on a pretty good bluster show. Cordy and Buffy then realize how the hunters were able to track their every move therešs a transmitter embedded in their corsages. Luring the Germans into two rooms separated by an adjacent wall, Buffy puts the transmitter into one room, then uses wet toilet paper to stick the other transmitter one of the Germans in the other room. The two brothers shoot each other dead across the wallŠ

Mr. Trick is arrested and taken to the Mayor, who basically enlists him as a kind of "strategy hit man", making an offer Trick canšt refuse.

Buffy and Cordy, dirty and dishevelled, arrive at the Bronze just in time to learn that the two other contenders to the Homecoming Queen title won in a tie. Disgusted that they did all this work for nothing, the two girls walk out together.
