It involved implanting a chip in his brain that would cause him acute neurological pain if he tried to harm a human being. Spike was able to use this fact to prove that Tara was not a demon. At first Spike wanted to stake himself, but recovered his lust for ‘life’ when he realized that he could still fight demons.
