Summary: Willow struggles with her rehabilitation in England.

Part Nine

Willow took a deep breath as she crossed the small cobblestone street and began walking down the block. She had her corduroy jacket pulled tight around her body and a thick Burberry scarf she'd borrowed from Giles winded in loops around her throat. She did have a lot of thinking to do, there had been a lot of things lately that she had been pushing away to fester and that never did any good. As she let herself open up inside she felt so many unresolved things flash-forward it almost turned her legs to jelly.

There was all the 'Tara' things, most of which she carried with her always but now even more as she tried to live her first Christmas without the blonde. It pulled at her and made her want to crawl up and let the white coats take her away.

In contrast to that was all of what was going on in her dreams and now in her conscious mind with Ru. How could she admit to Buffy the reason Ruth had run for the hills was that the empathic witch had obviously caught onto her random lusty thoughts and wanting nothing to do with her had run in the opposite direction? Not that she could blame Ruth at all, they were friends. Maybe ones who were close but wasn't their circumstance different than anything else?

"Properly screwed up Willow." She cursed at herself as she turned at the corner lamppost down the next street.

She felt other pulls... worries over her friends being here and how they were judging her handling of this trauma... the fact she'd almost been cremated and the biggest worry. What exactly was the nature of the spell that she and Ruth had cast? It wasn't any spell like she'd ever known. There had been no drain other than the initial fall out of the feeling of invincibility. There was no residue. No icky auras to disperse just wave after wave of hard tameable power that seemed to have a never ending source.

Turning again she looked both ways before finding the street deserted. There was no point straying too far, the last thing she needed was Buffy racing after her as if she was some useless lost child. As she turned again at the lamppost she looked up to see a man about Giles' age walking with a large sleek gray dog by his side.

"Happy Christmas." He nodded to her.

The sight of the dog's pink tongue darting in and out as he pranced along the sidewalk made Willow smile.

"Merry Christmas." She offered back softly only to have the dog turn to her and jump up. "Hey big fellow." She laughed when he did seeing the genuine excitement in the dog's eyes.

"Sorry Miss." He apologized pulled the lease back a little. "He's only friendly, he'd not hurt you."

"Oh I can tell, he's lovely. What is he?" She questioned reaching down to rub the dog's head when it stood again properly after the pull.

"A little of this, a little of that." The man chuckled softly.

"He's lovely." She rubbed his head again. "Must be loving Christmas."

"He's a handful but yes, though he's far too much. And you are you visiting friends over here?" The gentleman asked making pleasant conversation.

"Yes, Mr. Giles at number 34." Willow motioned over to the townhouse. "You live nearby?" She questioned politely.

"Not far yes. Are you used to the cold?" He gave a little shiver and rubbed his gloved hands together.

"Oh no but getting used to it." She admitted.

"I should be getting home, can't miss the repeat of the Queen's speech. I'd be for it then for sure, snored my way through the live version." He chuckled. "Nice to meet you."

"Nice to meet you too." Willow smiled at his very British reference and continued on her way. She took a deep breath and looked at the townhouse. Could she really stay out here hiding away from everything?

"Might as well face some of it." She shored up her courage as she pushed towards the house. "Buffy might be right, Giles might know about the magic at least."

Ruth perched on the edge of the pristine white bath, rubbing lip balm into her sore lips, as the tub behind her filled up with hot water. The large hotel bathroom was almost unpleasantly hot and the mirror was covered over with condensation. Sluggishly she pushed herself off the tub and crossed over to the sink. Leaning forward she rubbed her hand over the steamed glass making a small streaked clear patch with trails that raced hurriedly down the large mirrored glass.

For a long moment Ruth stood looking at the slightly distorted reflection of herself in the mirror, subconsciously she ran her finger along her slightly cracked lips and then trailed her finger tips up underneath her reddened eyes. Then she pulled her hand back and pushed it though her mess of short black hair.

"You look a mess Ru." She told herself almost angrily. "Your hair needs styling." She felt a tear sting in her slightly burnt eyes as it leaked out onto her cheek

"Why am I here?" She whispered, feeling a sob threatening to choke in her throat.

The dark haired witch ran her hand down her throat and over her shoulders under the white fluffy bathrobe she was wrapped in. Her fingers traced over the edge of her pendant.

"Lo." She whispered looking back up at the streaked mirror. "You wanted me to leave didn't you." She breathed. "You think I'm a freak like everyone else does. How could you not?" She crossed back over to the tub and turned off the taps.

"If the spell didn't convince you, the damn dreams would have." She shivered hard despite the overly hot atmosphere.

"Are you alright Elizabeth?" Her aunt's voice called from the main hotel room.

"Nearly done." She called back looking at the tub full of hot water.

With a sigh she reached in and pulled out the plug shaking her head sadly as more tears just joined the tub full of wasted water.

Buffy watched the door to the study slide close as Willow left to go to bed. She knew it was early but after the long conversation about what had gone on during the fire the redhead had started to look quite exhausted and the Slayer hoped that a good night's sleep would help her best friend be a bit brighter in the morning. She stayed snug within the swivel leather chair watching as Giles' perched on the windowsill.

"Drink Buffy?" Giles pushed from his place and crossed to the drink cabinet.

"No thanks." Buffy shook her head and pulled a pencil from the caddy on his desk playing with it. "So what do you think?"

"To what specifically?" Giles scratched the side of his head after pouring himself a small brandy.

"To this whole freaky fact that between Ruth and Willow they can walk through flames like a duo of superwomen." Buffy offered. "I'm sure Xander could name a specific superhero but I don't want to disturb the video they are watching."

"It needs research." The Watcher admitted moving back to his perch on the windowsill.

"Duh." Buffy gave him an ungrateful look. "Did Simple Simon get you any info yet?"

"What do you want me to say Buffy? It's an alarming unprecedented event that I can't give you any logical explanation for." Giles looked away for a moment. "Simon hasn't contacted me yet no." He replied quietly

"Better, now I don't feel like I'm the only one who has had a brainectomy." Buffy huffed leaning back and twirling the pencil.

"I am concerned that there is something, that maybe we are… over looking is the wrong word." Giles put his glass down on the sill. "Unaware of." He summed up in a phrase that he was happier with.

"Mmmm call me paranoid but I'm thinking that's a given." Buffy nodded for him to continue.

"Well yes, but aside from your pessimistic nature." Giles actually gave a tight smile. "In the duration of our conversation, you may recall Willow mentioned a neighbor with a dog, whom she met on her walk."

"Yeah, she's a sucker for the dogs." Buffy smiled to herself and watched as Giles pulled his glasses off and cleaned them.

"Well it may be nothing but…" He paused as he slipped them back into place. "There is a clause in the contracts of these period properties, that forbids dogs over a certain height. It's an ancient thing but something all the residents of the area are more than aware of, it's been the subject of many a residence committee debate I can tell you." Giles stopped aware how 'sad' he was probably sounding.

"What height?" Buffy leaned forward not focusing on the very sad British idiosyncrasy.

"Nothing larger than a Bull dog." Giles replied.

"But Will said this dog put its paws up on her shoulders almost and that would mean..." Buffy stood up.

"He could have lived outside the area of restriction." Giles looked over to the Slayer.

"Is there a park nearby here?" She asked the obvious question.

"The nearest park is the village common." Giles replied.

"Which is how far?" She couldn't believe he was making her work for this.

"About three miles." Giles stood up slowly.

"I'm going on patrol, where do you keep the weapons?" Buffy dropped the pencil on the desk.

"Buffy I assure you there are no vampires in the village." Giles shook his head.

I didn't say anything about hunting vampires." Her voice was steely.

"It could be nothing Buffy." He warned her.

"Giles when has it ever been nothing?" She asked the question seriously.

"Don't be long Buffy." Giles pointed out softly "We need you here."

"I won't." Buffy nodded.

Buffy yawned and flicked the kitchen light off having gotten her drink of water. She tiptoed back through the lounge, where Giles was sleeping on the couch, having given up his room for Anya and Dawn to share. From there she crept back through to the dining room and looked down at her make shift bed.

"I should have used the bathroom." Buffy glanced angrily back the way she had just come. The downstairs toilet was an extension off the kitchen. With a heavy sigh she glanced out into the hall. The bathroom upstairs was probably the better bet anyway.

Putting down her glass she tiptoed out and began climbing the stairs trying to avoid the ones she remembered were creaky.

When she reached the top, pleased with herself that she'd only made a horribly loud squeak once, Buffy realized that all the doors on the small landing when closed looked identical, in a small irrational moment Buffy forgot which was the bathroom door.

She reached out her hand moving it over towards each of the three doors trying to stir the asleep part of her memory into action. Just as she was about to make a decision, her keen slayer sense picked up on something that completely threw her decision making out of the window. Taking a bold step up to the door to her left she pushed it open and found what she expected but also dreaded.

In the corner of the darkened room beyond Willow could just be seen curled into a tight ball, pressed up against the dull striped wallpaper. Her longer red hair was sweat soaked and plastered to her face or hung limply down inside the collar of her T-shirt.

The redhead rocked and sobbed, each small movement sending a ripple of movement up the wall, causing the antique bracketed wall lights to shake a little, the glass rattling in its metal clasps.

"Will?" Buffy whispered wanting to rush over and comfort her best friend but unsure exactly how to proceed.

"Buffy?" The redhead squeaked out the name between heavy tears as she blinked in the dark to the doorway.

"Right here Will." Buffy whispered back, she moved into the room and crouched down close to her friend. "What's wrong?"

"You're still here." Willow reached out placing her clammy hand against Buffy's face in slight surprise.

"Of course I am." Buffy raised her hand and placed it over Willow's. "I'm not going anywhere while you need me."

"No, no… you left... you all went home and then they came." Willow shivered with her own words.

"They?" Buffy frowned harder easing Willow's hand off her check she held it in both of hers lightly in her lap

"Devils." Willow hissed out the word.

"Devils?" Buffy echoed. "As in demon minions of evil devils?"

"Ru... oh goddess Buffy... they killed her." Willow sobbed again leaning forward.

"What?" Buffy pushed up closer to Willow putting a hand on both of her arms, gently easing her back. "Willow are you dreaming?" She briefly let go and waved her hand in front of Willow's open eyes.

"You don't understand." Willow reached up and grabbed the waving hand. "They came and killed her, I let her die."

"What." Buffy's breath was taken away as the redhead caught her hand. "When? How?"

"It's going to happen." Willow corrected her tears streaming down her cheeks. "I'm going to lose her, I lose everyone who I love."

"No Will, no you don't. She's just gone to stay in a hotel with her aunt, she's not gone anywhere, just like none of us are going to go anywhere." Buffy smiled gently feeling she was sensing the route of her friend's worries.

"It's going to happen, it's going to happen... I saw it happen Buffy." Willow didn't calm she got more agitated as her breath whistled through her chest.

"Willow easy, it's not going to happen. Ruth's fine and safe, she's a big girl, a big witch type girl, she can handle herself." Buffy reached out trying to stroke Willow's arm comfortingly.

"No, she's not like you or even me. Her magic isn't real, giving nightmares to someone can't save her." Willow shook her head violently.

"Her magic isn't real?" Buffy frowned. "She's not a real witch?"

"No, her magic is feelings, fantasy, dreams." Willow tried to explain. "I blow up the building, she can make you believe it's blown up when it hasn't."

"Ah, handy, but not so much on the high survival skills list." Buffy caught on. "Even so Will, she's got her aunt and the council I am sure will be monitoring her in some way. You don't have to worry about her."

"How can they protect her?" Willow wept more.

Buffy sat back for a moment, just looking at her best friend and thinking about the things she had witnessed over their time in England. The redhead's mood and temperament when they had arrived, her insistence that Ruth be included in all the Christmas activities, and then the whole complacency with the dark haired witch leaving, only to be followed up with the admittance that it had been a lie.

Something just wasn't adding up with her best friend's actions and reactions towards matters involving the British witch.

"What's going on Will?" Buffy dropped her voice slightly and looked at Willow with steady hazel eyes.

"I don't know." Willow leaned back against the wall wrapping her arms around herself.

"I don't mean about the dream Will or the fire." Buffy shook her head.

"Nothing." Willow closed her eyes blinking tears onto her cheeks.

"Nothing?" Buffy arched her eyebrow slightly.

"Nothing." Willow nodded.

"You'd be this worked up if it were Jill or one of the other girls in danger?" Buffy watched her friend carefully.

"No, of course not." Willow lightly snapped at her.

"Willow, I'm only trying to understand." Buffy frowned back slightly hurt.

"Understand what? That I've spent the last few months too stupid to know I had real feelings and now that I have she's left me and she's going to die?" Willow asked the question not even knowing what she was saying. Everything was so raw inside her she just couldn't take it.

"Okay, that's all I needed." Buffy's voice dropped infinitely soft, she leaned forward and awkwardly eased the redhead into her arms.

"I can't loose her too." Willow sobbed when she felt the feeling of the Slayer holding her start to comfort her broken soul.

"You won't." Buffy shook her head. "I'm not going to let you down again Willow. I'll bring her back, back here where we can keep her safe." She rocked her best friend lightly one hand stroking lightly over wet hair.

"I didn't want to feel this way... I don't want anyone to think it's too forget Tara." She sniffled and sobbed out the blonde's name. "But I can't... not... Ru... I... love..." Her voice gave out.

"Shush, its okay." Buffy held her tighter. "I get it." She whispered. "I just need to know one thing." Buffy whispered placing her cheek against Willow's head. "She doesn't know does she? Ruth that is."

"N-N-No." Willow shook her head against Buffy's shaking. "I think that's why she left."

"Why would that be why she left?" Buffy frowned confused again.

"The other night, I had a dream about her. I think she must have felt it on me and it scared her off." Willow tried to explain.

"A dream like this one?" Buffy frowned. "That'd scare me will but not have me running off to somewhere I wasn't protected."

"Not a nightmare." Willow looked up briefly biting her lip.

"Not a nightmare?" Buffy frowned. "You mean it was a happy dream?"

"A very happy dream." Willow nodded as Buffy summed to get the point of what she was saying.

"Oh." Buffy felt her cheeks redden and she was thankful for the dim laugh. "When?" She hardly dare ask the question.

"Last night." Willow looked down. "Right before she left."

"Oh." Buffy said again. "Why didn't you ask her to stay Will?"

"I was scared." The redhead admitted in a whisper.

"Scared of Ruth?" Buffy questioned worriedly.

"Sacred of feeling what I do for her... I only ever felt anything like this for Tara." She admitted softly.

"Makes you stomach flip-floppy and your heart beat faster eh?" Buffy smiled gently hoping that her best friend's eyes had grown accustomed to the darkness enough to pick up on it.

"And the whole crazy Willow babble on speed." She nodded back.

"Big scary." Buffy kept her smile.

"What am I going to do?" Willow asked seriously.

"About how you feel?" Buffy checked the precision of her best friend's question.

"About protecting her, about how I feel, about if she doesn't feel the same, about not freaking out because I feel it about not freaking everyone out because I do." Willow went on for a bit and saw Buffy's gaze cutting her off.

"Willow, what other people think, isn't the point we're your friends, we want to see you happy." Buffy began softly. "When warren..." She stopped. "When Tara was killed, I thought, I felt for sure that I had lost you both. Okay there was the apocalyptic rage thing from you, but that's not when I thought I'd lost you, it was after that, when you came here." She explained her voice honest and soft. "And then when I get on a plane and get my ass here, I find you. I find Willow. My Willow, our Willow…" She stated clearly. "And I look around and I ask myself how, how has this happened?"

Willow listened desperate for the honest words of comfort and support.

"And before now all I had was a big old house, which is really cool, but it couldn't have given me my best friend back. I see Fred Waltham, or whatever that stuck up jerks name is. And I know he couldn't give me what I feared I had lost back. I see Giles, God love Giles, trying his damnedest to help but who at the end of the day is as lost and hurting for you as the rest of us are. And before now, I also saw Ruth, a really kind, English witch who helped you as much as she could. But now, now I can see that the thing that has saved you, is the thing that nearly took you from me, from us all. Willow…" Buffy breathed gently and reached out a hand to brush red hair.

"What?" Willow squeaked trying to understand.

"Out of all of us, the Scoobies, the people we know and meet, you're the one with the biggest heart I have ever known. Which is why I felt for sure that I'd loose you when that heart got broken. Tell Ruth, tell her how you feel, how scared you are," Buffy softly pointed out.

"What if she doesn't want me?" Willow questioned in a tiny voice.

"She'll want you." Buffy replied without hesitation.

"You'll come with me to see her?" Willow questioned softly.

"Of course." Buffy nodded.

"Do you think she's safe tonight?" Willow rubbed at her swollen eyes.

"What me to go find the address and drive on over there?" Buffy offered openly. "I'm sure I could get this driving on the wrong side thing sorted."

"Will you think I'm crazy if I say yes?" The redhead gave her a tiny smile.

"No." Buffy shook her head.

"Please." Willow nodded softly.

"Wanna come with me?" The Slayer asked gently.

"Okay." Willow put her arm against Buffy's letting the Slayer help her up.

Buffy parked the car outside the large, obviously full hotel. She peered out of the windshield assessing the situation. She turned to the redhead beside her with a gentle smile.

"How you doing?" She asked gently

"Nervous." Willow looked out the window at the building.

"You want to stay here?" Buffy asked not wanting to push her too far.

"I have to go talk to her." Willow looked back at the Slayer giving a brave smile.

"You realize we're not going to be taking the front door." Buffy offered softly.

"Oh yeah, Giles' whole freak out about how British hotels don't allow visitors at this hour made me realize that." She felt her smile relax into a more natural expression. "How are we going to get in though?"

"Great, so I'll go look for a back way in, I need a way to contact you." Buffy answered.

'We could use this.' Willow's eyes narrowed as she tried to project her voice into Buffy's mind.

"What the hell?" Buffy squeaked looking around the car.

'It was something I learned when we were fighting without you.' Willow explained, as the Slayer looked around puzzled.

"Can I do it?" Buffy asked with a slightly puzzled frown.

'I think so, you just have to concentrate.' Willow nodded for her to give it a go.

'Like this?' Buffy breathed in and closed her eyes trying to focus.

'Hey see there you go.' Willow smiled as the Slayer's voice, though it was more nasal then usual, came into her head.

'Hey this is cool.' Buffy chuckled. 'But it's not bad is it?'

'Oh no, low grade magic if you know how to do it. See no black eyes.' Willow blinked at her and pointed to her face.

Buffy looked up at her friend, to see that indeed her eyes were green.

"Okay, well I'll go see what I can find, and then call you." Buffy quietly opened her door. Willow flipped down the sun visor and used the small mirror to fix her hair and wipe at her eyes trying to make sure she didn't look all post weepy washed out.

'Will?' Buffy's can't have been gone longer than two minutes before she contacted the redhead.

'Yes?' Willow heard her and answered immediately.

'I have a way in, come round the side of the building opposite the main entrance.'

The Slayer directed.

'Oh my way.' Willow took a deep breath wrapping her scarf around her throat before she got out, locked the doors and hurried around to see Buffy near a metal door.

"They really need to see someone about their locks." Buffy grinned holding the door slightly open.

"I don't think they were expecting you." Willow slipped into the emergency stairwell.

"That's not my problem!" Buffy eased the door closed behind them. "So what's their room number?" She triple checked with Willow before moving.

"315." Willow noted from the slip of paper that Anne had given Buffy.

"Third floor I'm guessing, after you." She nodded upwards.

Willow began up the brightly-lit corridor until they reached the second landing and an interior door marked three. Tentatively she opened it and headed into the more dimly lit carpeted corridor.

There was still noise coming from odd rooms as the walked down the corridor even though it was close to four o'clock.

"Buffy, how am I going to talk to her if her Aunt wakes up?" Willow stopped panicking for a moment.

"Oh don't worry, we're going to knock on the door." Buffy said boldly. "I have been working on my arguments."

"We are?" Willow looked at her confused.

"We are." She nodded. "There's nothing like a best friend in need to inspire a slayer."

"Thank you." Willow leaned forward and hugged Buffy suddenly. Buffy hugged her back and rubbed her back briefly.

"Room number 315, you ready?" She smiled feeling like she was doing the most important thing in the world.

"I think so." Willow absently straightened out her coat and scarf.

"Great, here goes." Buffy wiped her hand on her coat before knocking lightly on the door. To both the Slayer's and Willow's surprise the door was opened nearly immediately.

"I didn't think you would be this quick." Ruth's aunt said as she pulled the door open, her voice stopped, as she looked who was on the other side of the door.

"Hi, is Ruth here?" Willow tried the simple approach as she saw the woman's face fall.

"You, you can't come in." Anne shook her head. "I'm expecting people." She pushed the door a little closed until Buffy caught it in her hand.

"We really want to talk to Ruth." Buffy pointed out.

"You, you can't." Anne replied something about the woman's eyes made Buffy curious.

"Who are you expecting?" The Slayer asked.

Ms. Tanner took a slight breath and then glanced behind her briefly. Turning back to the door again she seemed to make a decision.

"The paramedics." She replied quietly.

"Paramedics?" Willow squeaked the words. "What's wrong with Ruth?" She stepped forward towards the door.

Almost relieved that someone, anyone was here to help Anne backed up a little releasing the door.

"Ru." Willow pushed by her into the hotel room not sure what she would find but knowing she had to do something.

Buffy moved quickly past her and through into the room a step behind Willow. In the dimly lit main room of the suite, there were two twin beds, neither was occupied but there came from the room a regular dull thumping sound.

"Ru?" Willow looked around frantically when she didn't immediately see the other woman.

"Ruth." Buffy called shortly after, walking boldly into the room further. "Will." Her voice dropped as she cornered round the far bed. The Slayer dropped to her knees as she called for the redhead.

Willow came racing over and seeing what Buffy had seen dropped as well pressing past the blonde.

"Ru, baby?" She questioned softly.

Tight in the corner of the room the dark haired witch was crammed into the smallest space she could take up. Regularly she banged her head off the wall directly to her right.

"Be quiet, please be quiet." She chanted almost silently.

"I can't make her stop." From behind the girls Ruth's aunt whispered horrified.

"Buffy can you take her outside." Willow glanced back at the distraught older woman. "And keep any paramedics out of here." She gave off the instructions before she moved closer. "Ru... honey it's Lo... concentrate on me baby." She moved closer careful not to touch her.

"Will are you sure you can deal with this?" Buffy didn't back up.

"I can deal." Willow said confidently. "Ru... I'm going to recharge your amulet." She explained as she reached up slowly to try to put her fingers around the small sun.

"Ms. Tanner, I trust Willow we should back off." Buffy instructed in a firm voice and quietly the pair could be heard retreating.

"Willow I don't want to interrupt you but I think I'm going to have to go cancel the alarm at the front desk I think maybe Anne should stay." Buffy called over to her.

"NO!" Ruth suddenly seemed to snap out of her trance a little her hand flashing up and closing round Willow's. "You're not really, Lo isn't here." She kept up the almost rhythmical pounding of her head.

"Yes, I am Ru." Willow clasped her hand around Ruth's. "Elmo is here, really here. I had to come I couldn't sleep without you, I missed you so much." She whispered trying to get Ruth to concentrate.

"Alone, alone in a house full of noise." Ruth whimpered.

"I'm going to make it better Ru." Willow blinked and her eyes filled with dark magic as she pushed all the emotions she was feeling into the power center within her and drew the magic back out. "I'll stop the voices."

She reached her other hand up clasping it around the pendant as she began to push power back into the spell she had cast the day before to recharge it's blocking ability. Ever so slowly Ruth stopped colliding her head against the wall.

"There you go baby." Willow let go and put her hand up brushing short hairs off Ruth's forehead. "All quiet now, just me and you."

"Lo?" Ruth's tiny voice enquired after blinking several times, sore navy eyes looked up.

"Right here Ru." Willow blinked her own dark eyes. "Is everything quiet or do you need a blocking field?" She questioned softly still holding tight to Ruth's hand.

"I don't know, my head, it hurts." The dark haired witch whispered.

"That's because you and the wall were having frequent meetings." Willow reached up to rub Ruth's head.

"Ow." She gave a weak smile and leaned a little into Willow's hand.

"Very ow." Willow blinked again as the dark began to seep out of her eyes. "Hi baby." She pulled closer so that Ruth could lean away from the wall and against her.

"There was a party." Ruth mumbled slightly disconnectedly. "I told Anne we shouldn't go, but there was wine and presents." Ruth sagged into Willow's body. "There were people everywhere, touching, laughing."

"Not a good place for my Ru." Willow soothed gathering her up in a soft hug and rocking her slightly.

"But it didn't stop, not when we came back." She tried to explain.

"The hotel is full of people, you're range of sensitivity was too wide after all the overload." She explained the logical scenario to the witch. "Just you and me now." She soothed again.

"Will, we might need to go." Buffy's out of breath voice called as the Slayer appeared in the door.

"What's going on?" She looked over the bed at her.

"We have an ambulance, a police car and Fred just arriving." She pointed out the window to the front of the hotel.

"She can't handle that." Willow looked panicked at the Slayer. "Ru, I have to take you somewhere safe do you trust me?" She questioned the dark haired witch softly.

"Shouldn't we let the paramedics take her?" Anne questioned anyone who would answer.

"If you never want to see her again." Willow pushed herself up gently dragging Ruth to her feet. She dipped a little centering her power again as she brought Ruth up into her arms. "Can we make it to the car?" She looked at Buffy.

"But maybe she needs medication, will Mr. Waltham be bringing her drugs?" Anne looked between the two young Americans.

"I'll go bring it around onto the grass." Buffy nodded quickly.

"Look I don't have time to explain this too you in a nice way, your niece is a witch." Willow scowled at the older woman as she watched Buffy run out. "She has the power to read people's emotions and their dreams. It drains her when she's in crowds and at parties. There is no medication, no wonder cure other than me getting her out of here. So are you coming or are you staying?"

"I... maybe I should stay here, send them away." Anne offered.

"I promise you I will take care of her." Willow blinked as her eyes went dark giving her the extra strength needed to carry Ruth out of the room.

"Please, I didn't take her away from you to hurt her." Ruth's aunt seemed close to tears.

"She knows that, we'll call you as soon as we can to let you know how she is." Willow turned sideways to get out the door.

"I'm sorry." Ruth's aunt called sadly.

The redhead couldn't hang around to further the apology as she pushed down the hall backtracking her way quickly to the side door they had broke in through.

Buffy stopped the car just shy of the door and was just getting out as Willow appeared.

"Backseat." She instructed for Buffy to open the door so she could go in the back with Ruth.

Buffy pulled the door open as wide as it would go. Willow slid in with Ruth still in her lap and gathered the blanket that was back there around them.

"Home?" Buffy asked as she clambered into the driver's seat.

"Fred will go there first." Willow shook her head. "Just get us out of here please." She looked behind them to see if anyone was following.

"Okay, but I have no clue where I am going." Buffy nearly stalled the car before bouncing it off over the grass onto the car park and then out onto the main road.

"Ru, honey?" Willow checked rubbing Ruth's cheek as they exited the car park and headed away.

"Lo?" Ruth's voice was weak and confused.

"Right here, are the voices dim enough?" She checked softly.

"Yes." Ruth whispered. "What time is it?"

"About four am." Willow filled in softly. "You should try to sleep, Buffy's going to drive us somewhere quiet so that you can recharge." She looked up into the front seat where the Slayer seemed engrossed on remembering to drive on the proper side and maneuver through the confusing round abouts.

"I don't really." Ruth blinked her eyes confused. "Why did you come?"

"Ru, there is so much I want to tell you but I don't want to overwhelm you." Willow spoke back softly as she looked into tired navy eyes. "Most important thing is keeping you safe."

"I'm safe." Ruth turned over slightly and nestled into Willow's lap.

"Good, because I'm going to make sure no one ever hurts you again." Willow hugged her tighter and dropped a long kiss on the witch's forehead savoring the heat that pressed back into her lips.

Willow opened her eyes and realized the car wasn't moving anymore. A quick look around showed that they were in a rather large parking lot, though Buffy had parked them far in a deserted corner. The very comforting sight of a McDonalds' glared a few hundred feet away and she could make out Buffy walking towards it.

The time on the turned off radio told her it was about 6:30am and no doubt Buffy had needed something to eat and a chance to call in and tell Giles they were okay. She arched her back a bit, easing it away from the door that she was leaned against. Ruth was carefully tucked into her body and the blanket still shrouded over them.

"We've stopped." A soft English verse stated.

"McDonalds's, not sure where. I think our driver needed food." Willow rubbed her hand over Ruth's back.

"Buffy." Ruth stated to show the redhead she remembered how they had got to be in the middle of nowhere.

"How's your head?" Willow asked softly.

"Aching." Ruth admitted.

"Ru, I'm so sorry." Willow closed her eyes hugging the other woman tighter. "I should have never let you leave."

"Don't." Ruth shook her head and pushed up from the redhead's lap rather awkwardly. "It wasn't your fault."

"It was." Willow contradicted.

"Why was it?" Ruth asked frowning gently.

"Because if I just hadn't of been so scared I would have been able to tell you I didn't want you to go, how scared I was for you to leave me, how much it hurt to see you walk out the door." Willow pulled her knees up to her chest when the area was left empty.

"I'm sorry too, but I couldn't stay." Ruth curled up a little too.

"Why?" Willow asked the question back.

"Because... because…" Ruth frowned and dropped her head a little. "Because I knew you didn't want me there."

"What?" All of Willow's thoughts were sidetracked when she registered the words. "I didn't want you there? Ru that is the most insane idea I've ever heard. I so wanted you there." She took a breath.

"You didn't." Ruth shook her head.

"I did." Willow underlined.

The dark haired woman reached a slightly trembling hand out and rubbed her fingertips against Willow's temple.

"I see what you think." She whispered.

"Not this time." Willow reached up had pressed Ruth's hand to her face. "If you did then you'd see that I wanted you to stay, I want you to stay with me every minute, you'd see that I love you." She finished her voice soft.

"No, no I did see, I saw that I confuse you, that I scare you, that I make you feel churned up inside." Ruth's hand trembled. How much did she want Willow to be saying all of this? More than she wanted anything else in the world, but still she couldn't believe it.

"I'm confused and scared because I never thought I would find anyone in this world who I could fall in love with again." Willow admitted barely finding any volume. "I feel churned up because the last thing I want to do is throw myself at you and then find out that you only want to be friends while I want to be with you." She leaned heavily against Ruth's hand.

"But the dreams." Ruth moved to pull her hand away, her head dropping in shame. "You must have felt the dreams I forced on you because of my over active, whatever that was."

"The dreams?" Willow was slightly shocked at the reference. "You saw my dreams?" She felt her cheeks grow hot. She caught Ruth's hand before it could go very far.

"Your dreams?" Ruth looked up.

"My dreams... of..." Willow smiled softly. "Getting to kiss you and snuggle."

"But they were my dreams." Ruth shook her head a little.

"Mine." Willow shook her head. "I woke up in bed with you and all I could think about was making love with you."

"But, no that can't be because I wanted to touch you, hold you, and I made it happen in my head, it was like I couldn't stop it." Ruth contradicted her.

"Ru, baby, does it matter whose dream it was if we both wanted it?" Willow questioned pushing her legs down and moving closer to the dark haired witch. "I mean, that is assuming all that you said was a way of saying that you love me too. Or at least I hope it was or I'm going to totally start crying." She offered with a quirky smile.

"I do, oh Lo of course I do." Ruth shook her head with a soft laugh.

"So do I." Willow's lips curled up into a smile. "That's why I came tonight, to tell you."

"Sorry about the mess you found." Ruth apologized.

"Ru, I don't mind messy as long as I can help make it better." Willow shook her head to the apology. "You should have seen me when Buffy found me, total mess."

"Hardly the same situation Lo." Ruth shook her head.

"You didn't see me, I think Buffy would disagree." The redhead smirked. "So does this mean you promise not to leave me again?" She held out her hand.

"I... Fred said we're bad for each other." Ruth paused slightly before giving her hand to the other witch.

"This doesn't feel bad, being away from you feels bad." Willow admitted rubbing her thumb over Ruth's hand.

"So bad." Ruth nodded closing her fingers around Willow's hand.

"Ru, I know I have so much baggage and I know you know all about all of it but I also know that I love you. There's only one other time I felt anything like this." She admitted softly.

"Tara?" Ruth asked gently and watched as Willow nodded. "I don't know how to tell you how humbled that makes me feel. How honored, how special." She whispered.

"Does it make you believe I didn't want you to go anywhere, that I don't want you to go anywhere ever?" Willow whispered back drawing Ruth's hand into her lap.

"Would it make any sense if I admitted I don't know what it makes me believe, other than, that you are every bit the amazing person I thought you were." Ruth's voice was quiet and honest.

"Only if you start believing how amazing you are." Willow ran her other hand over Ruth's wrist.

"That's a tall order Elmo." Ruth smiled.

"I know you can do it." Willow smiled back.

"Hey look who's awake." The front door of the car opened and Buffy stuck her head around it.

"Hi." Willow looked up at the Slayer.

"I have fries and coke." She held up the offerings.

"For breakfast?" The redhead screwed up her nose.

"Is there something else you'd prefer?" Buffy chuckled.

"Black coffee might be nice." Willow looked back at the restaurant.

"You just want me to walk all the way back over there don't you?" Buffy shook her head and pulled it back out of the car. Before pushing back in the next second. "You want anything Ruth?" She asked thoughtfully. The dark haired witch shook her head.

"She might be the slayer but she has bad timing." Willow laughed lightly as Buffy shut the door and walked away.

"Very I'd say." Ruth laughed softly.

"Ru, I know things are going to be complicated with the magic, with people like Fred, with so many things but I don't want any of that to come between us." Willow bit her lip as she looked down at their hands.

"I don't either." Ruth admitted her navy eyes also looked at their hands as well.

"So does that mean you want to try?" Willow looked up hopefully.

"I want to try." Ruth nodded raising her head slightly. "If you're sure."

"I'm sure." Willow nodded back.

"You want to shake on it?" Ruth giggled lightly.

"Mmmm there's something else we could do." Willow smiled at the giggle and licked her lips slightly.

"There is." Ruth nodded licking hers in turn. "Though I'm guessing we left my balm at the hotel."

"We can get you more." Willow felt herself press forward her back leaving the seat.

"Are you sure you want this Lo?" Ruth leaned forward too, almost on automatic in response to the redhead's shift in position.

"Yes." Willow's whisper matched her slow move further forward. "You?"

"Yes." Ruth nodded her navy eyes tracing over every inch of Willow's face as they came closer.

"I love you." Willow's voice stayed soft as she said the words wanting to at least be able to hear them again confirming her own feelings.

"I love you." Ruth matched Willow's tone and timbre.

Hearing the words made Willow close her eyes as she pressed the rest of the short distance, her lips coming full over Ruth's. Ruth felt her own eyes draw close as she felt the softness of Willow's lips, her hand closing tightly in Willow's. After a few wonderful moments Willow pulled her lips back opening her eyes.

"You are so beautiful." She whispered squeezing Ruth's hand.

"I'm so lucky." Ruth gently contradicted.

"No, that's me." Willow leaned forward more, hugging her arms around Ruth's body as her head rested on the brunette's shoulder. Ruth snuggled into the embrace her breathing relaxing slightly, for the first time since the fire, she was not afraid to just enjoy the closeness being offered.

Buffy passed the rather unhappy looking fast food worker what she hoped was a five pound note. To be honest the varying sizes and colors and shapes on the notes kind of confused her, so instead she just went with the one that had a five on it. She carefully picked up the tray with two coffees and another super sized fries and then thanked her as she handed her back a fist full of change.

"Have a nice day." The words from the less than enthusiastic acne ridden teenager nearly made the Slayer wince.

"Yeah you too." She grimaced slightly as she pushed the collection of coins into her pocket and then began making her way to the door.

As she stepped into the chilled morning air, she took a deep breath, and then watched as it condensed and curled up into the cool, still air. She was doing her best not to feel downhearted, after all they had got Ruth and Willow seemed better just because of that fact. But everything about the situation felt anything but right. There was just something about everything that didn't add up but right now she had no clue what that was.

Giles had done his best to be reassuring in their brief phone conversation, assuring her that he understood that Ruth needed to be with them and protected. But that until he could come up with exactly where would be safe and protected a car park in the middle of nowhere was as good as anywhere.

Buffy didn't feel assured. She felt worried. Worried for Ruth, after all it definitely seemed that whoever had organized the attack on the manor had been aiming for the dark haired spellcaster. Worried for Willow, Buffy was more than aware that her best friend had been through more than most people could ever handle and that the latest person to have captured her heart wasn't exactly the quiet 'girl next door' that she might have hoped for.

Off to the left side of the parking lot a dark Mercedes pulled into an empty row of parking spaces, its front swung outside the yellow lines that broke the area into separate spots. Almost immediately the doors opened on clockwork though the lights were left on and the car running as two men exited and seemed rather stupidly to take a look around, after all who could miss the oversized neon yellow arches that called anyone within a five-mile radius to the restaurant. The taller of the two wore a three quarter length gray trench coat, the back barely wrinkled as he rounded the front of the car his left hand awkwardly reaching around to hold his other elbow as he clutched his right arm to his body.

The second man was stocky, his wide muscular shoulders making his upper body seem to sit on an impossibly small waist before his oversized legs jutted out again. He followed slightly behind the other man, his eyes scanning the parking lot over and over.

Buffy's attention was first grabbed by the sound of the car and then by the slamming of both doors and yet the continued purr of the oversized engine. Her eyes narrowed as she focused on the two occupants who slowly began moving together across the lot. She didn't need to check the direction in which they were headed, her instincts had told her long before, and in fact they had screamed it as soon as the dark car pulled to a halt. That same instinct had told her to drop what she was carrying and run and indeed that is exactly what she found herself doing.

With her arms suddenly free, Buffy used all of her skill and strength to push her faster and faster towards the distant parked car with Willow and Ruth inside.

'Willow!' She called out in her head as she pelted onward.

'Buffy?' Willow's slightly groggy response came back.

'People, bad people.' Buffy exclaimed. 'Coming towards the car.' She added taking a quick glance at the two others that had started running only seconds after she had. The smaller, yet heavier of the two taking a surprising lead on his companion.

'How many?' The redhead's voice became more attentive as she used Buffy's better position to get information. 'Coming from where?'

'Two.' Buffy pushed harder, her lungs beginning to hurt slightly as they drew in the unusually cold air. 'At about three o'clock.' The Slayer was relieved as she drew closer to the car, having a good lead on the two assailants.

'Can you get in and drive?' Willow questioned just as the front leading man ran into an invisible barrier his body bouncing backwards to land prone on the pavement.

'Yeah.' Buffy couldn't help but smirk as she watched him hit the ground with a thump after hitting Willow's barrier.

The smirk didn't last many seconds however as she glanced back to see the other man had stopped running and had instead leveled what looked like a rifle.

'Gun!' Buffy's mind shouted, as there was the loud low snap of it being fired.

'Dodge.' Willow's mind instructed the Slayer as for a few moments time became sluggish and everything in a hundred-foot radius slowed down, including the green feather tailed tranquillizer dart that was hurdling towards the Slayer.

Buffy turned her head, her hair flicking out in perfect slow motion in a blonde arc as she watched the dart spin towards her. Pushing her body to the side she watched it spinning past and as it fell towards the tarmac it sped up as the effects of Willow's spell ended. Flicking her head back round Buffy jumped and executed a perfect leap and forward spin that brought her to the side of the car. She wrenched the door open and threw herself into the driver's seat.

"You okay?" She panted at Willow and Ruth in the back and saw the redhead blinking black filled eyes at her.

"Just drive." She hissed quietly as she sent what Buffy could only guess was a shockwave out from the car that literally flipped up both men, leaving them struggling to get up from the floor.

Buffy couldn't help but notice the slightly alarmed look in Ruth's navy eyes and she manhandled the steering wheel and slammed her foot on the gas.

With a squeal of protesting tires the car swung around and headed out towards the exit. Behind them there were shouts of protest and curses from the two men and then the sound of the Mercedes revving up and turning around in the car park to pick up the two passengers and then follow Buffy's escape.

"Keep driving." Willow turned slightly judging their distance behind as they went to go over the curb onto the road. The four tires on the black car suddenly blew out in unison leaving the man behind the wheel to steer it to a spark filled stop as the rims dug into the pavement under the weight and speed.

"I'm sorry." Buffy apologized as soon as she had put some distance between them and the stationary car. Partially wondering whether or not to stop the car to check if everyone was okay.

"Who were they?" Willow asked rather stupidly towards the front at the Slayer as she eased her grip on Ruth enough to lean down slightly and check on her trying to forget how her eyes would still be.

"At this moment Will, I have no clue." Buffy admitted. "But I'm thinking that it wasn't so much a McDonalds's drive through attempt as a tipped off this is where you'll find the witches." She frowned. "But I don't get it, I only called Giles it was a two minute conversation." She stopped. "The Council." She hissed as something clicked in her head.

"That would make sense. Who else would bring a gun to take you out?" Willow added somewhat matter of factly. "Are you okay Ru?" She asked in a much softer voice.

"I'm sorry I didn't help at all." Ruth shook her head.

"You did exactly what you needed to do in order to help, stayed close to me." The redhead assured her softly. "I won't let anything hurt you, not even the Council."

"But this makes no sense." Buffy interjected. "The Council are the good guys in this, well I thought they were, I mean you guys are in a Council run rehab center, if they were the bad guys wouldn't they just have dealt with you in the center?" She hated to point out the obvious.

"Um Buffy, did you forget the whole fire thing?" Willow glanced up to catch the blonde's eyes in the rear view mirror.

"No, I understand her point." Ruth eased up a bit. "I mean why be so elaborate, I've been in the center three times Lo." The dark haired woman looked at Willow.

"But…" Willow hesitated as her mind started to slot things around like puzzle pieces. "It's the first time you're doing well, you've got so much stronger and…" She hesitated again. "It's not my third time." She added blinking as the dark seeped out of her eyes.

"It's about both of you." Buffy summed up, she slowed the car down a little and pulled into the next lay by. She turned in her seat to look at the two witches. "I just don't get why the Council is doing this, I mean it was their idea to bring you here." She looked at Willow. "Why do that if they didn't want you around?"

"About both of us?" The redhead held onto the first statement. "But… both of us how?" She looked at Ruth a little lost.

"What if its not the Council?" Ruth offered looking back at Willow.

"Then who? No one else knows that I'm in England and surely no one else would know what you can do." Willow squeezed the dark haired witch's hand and glanced at the Slayer for any enlightened comment.

"Unless there's a mole." Buffy's eyes flared for a moment. "In the Council, in the manor." She gripped the steering wheel tight. "Someone working for someone else while pretending to be a good guy." She was specific in her gender titling.

"You think its Fred don't you?" Willow looked at her slightly scared by the accusation, after all Fred had been there with both of them every single step of the way.

"Fred?" Ruth's voice was a mere gasp.

"Oh come on don't give me shocked face." Buffy looked incredulously at them. "He sends out force nine creep vibes and that's before you hear the monotone drone that comes out of his mouth."

"I guess he does, Ru did you ever feel anything weird from him?" Willow looked softly at the other witch.

"Weird?" Ruth frowned. "No, he gives off waves of fear and insecurity at times, but I don't recall ever feeling anything specific." She shook her head. "Then again I have to touch people to read that much." She added. "I've never had that particular pleasure with Fred."

"You mean in all your time at the manor you never even touched his hand or anything?" Willow felt a flag going up in her mind.

"When I first went back this time I think maybe he shook my hand but that's all at the most." Ruth explained. "He's not my counselor, you know how strict they are about regime and rules at the manor Lo, it wasn't his place to touch me or visa-versa."

"We should phone Giles." Willow felt a cold shiver run up her spine. After all didn't it appear now that all these months Fred had been preparing her to be a better warrior witch while tactically avoiding Ruth? There were just too many unanswered questions and far too much to worry about.

"No can do Willow." Buffy shook her head. "Not with the phone tapped." She cursed under her breath but then perked up. "No wait a minute." She reached into her pocket and pulled out her wallet. Flicking it open she smile and pulled out a scrap of paper with a number scrawled on it in sparkling pink pen. "Gotcha!" She grinned and moved to spur the engine into life again.

Dawn felt herself startled out of sleep as the pile of clothes next to her head began to chime out Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer in high electronic pitches.

"Hello?" She managed to get it on the fourth ring, her voice groggy and not quite coherent.

"Go away!" Anya groaned and turned over pulling the patchwork quilt up over her head.

"Anya shut up." Dawn rolled up to sit and tried again. "Hello?" She questioned louder.

"Dawn?" Buffy hissed into the phone for a second time.

"Buffy?" Dawn's voice was confused. "Why are you calling me from the dining room?" She reached up rubbing at her tired eyes.

"The dining room?" Buffy sounded confused for a moment until she realized that of course that was where the teenager thought she was. "No Dawn things have kind of happened since then, I'm not sleeping in the dining room right now, I'm in a car with Willow and Ruth, I need to talk to Giles." She explained quickly.

"Giles?" Dawn asked again still confused. "I don't think he's even awake." She replied.

"He's awake, trust me on this. Go down and get him." Buffy instructed.

"What's going on? Why are you in a car with Willow and Ruth, I thought Ruth was with her aunt." Dawn grumbled a little and climbed out of the comfortable bed and stumbled towards the stairs.

"She was, but we needed to get her out of there, a hotel isn't the right place for Ruth." Buffy tried to give her sister the barest details.

"Then why haven't you just brought her back here?" Dawn asked, she maybe sleepy but she wasn't stupid.

"It's complicated Dawn, I need to talk to Giles." Buffy replied.

Dawn reached the living room door and gave a short knock. Within no time the door swung open and a very awake and fully dressed Giles stood in the door.

"Dawn." He greeted her with a smile.

"My sister, for you." Dawn sighed and handed over the cell phone.

"Giles? Giles is that you?" Buffy said quickly.

"Yes of course, Buffy what's going on? I thought we agreed you'd phone back at nine?" The Watcher held the small pink cell phone awkwardly.

"Yeah well that got put on hold right after the last assassination attempt." Buffy replied quickly. "You're phone is bugged."

"That is ridiculous." He scoffed at the idea. "This is my private line."

"In that case I'm turning the car around, driving back to your place and kicking you around a bit because you're a mole." Buffy replied. "I'm serious Giles, your phoned is tapped, guys in a big black Mercedes turned up fifteen minutes after our last phone call, looking for Willow and Ruth, they had a tranquillizer gun."

"Oh good Lord my phone is tapped." Giles seemed to squeak the words as he sunk down to sit on the edge of the couch. "Is everyone all right?" He checked the most important fact.

"Barely." Buffy admitted. "I mean I'm driving round the English countryside, in a car with its wheel on the wrong side, a stick that I'm not too sure what to do with, other than wiggle and push it occasionally, with no clue where I am going. Willow is so close to losing it, though if it weren't for black eyed power thing I'd be a sleeping slayer right now and I think Ruth has had about as much as an empathic psychic can take."

"Understandable." Giles agreed trying to formulate some sort of plan. "Do you have any money on you?"

"I've got the change from the McDonalds's and my credit cards." The Slayer acknowledged. "We need to get rid of the car and get somewhere safe." She pointed out. "Because if our friends in the Mercedes have got back to whoever they came from the car will be marked and known."

"Exactly." Giles nodded as his mind moved. "You should get a cash advance on your credit card and then put as much distance between you and the cash point as possible. Head to one of the larger cities, you can ditch the car in an underground car park and then secure a hotel. We'll have Dawn's mobile so you can contact us once you're settled."

"Giles I'm the slayer not 007." Buffy objected.

"Consider yourself hired by the secret service then. I don't think I need to stress to you of all people Buffy how important it is for us to keep both of them safe until we can figure out what is going on and exactly who it is that is threatening them." The Watcher's voice was firm.

"Fred." Buffy hissed the man's name.

"Fred? What does Mr. Waltham have to do with this? Perhaps I should notify him as well." Giles mused without really internalizing the tone of Buffy's voice.

"Don't even think about it." Buffy seethed. "Unless you're going to call him and tell him we went back to California." She continued. "I think he's behind this, whatever this is."

"What evidence do you have to make wild accusations such as that Buffy?" Giles kept his own headlong fall into conspiracy theories in check. "I know he's not the most intriguing of individuals but he is very well respected."

"Well respected and trusted, the best kind of mole." Buffy snarled. "Giles I admit I don't have much, just a bunch of suspicious facts that add up to nothing much, but someone at the manor knows what's going on and is working either for the Council or with someone else against them." The slayer paused. "Right now all I have got are two scared young women who need to get some rest, the rest of the theory can wait."

"Then you do as I said Buffy. Take out a cash advance on your credit card, somewhere accessible and near where you are now. Then you go to somewhere very crowded, Ruth should be able to direct you to an appropriate city. Dispose of the car and secure a hotel somewhere. We can arrange to rendezvous somewhere public which will give us options in case of another attack" He gave her a firm outline.

"But Giles I can't get them far away in a short space of time." Buffy argued. "Using my card would be too easily traceable wouldn't it?" She objected again thinking back to an episode of X-Files she watched with Dawn.

"I could help." Anya offered from the doorway.

"Good lord Anya how long have you been there?" Giles gasped.

"Long enough to know things are going wrong." She replied. "I could get money for them." She continued. "I could get it from anywhere." She admitted with a smile. "Why be a vengeance demon and not use the perks occasionally?"

Giles seemed to think about things for a moment and then turned his attention back to Buffy.

"Head into a main city." He amended his plan. "Dispose of the car as we suggested and then take a taxi to a hotel. Telephone us to tell us which hotel, Anya will meet you there with a new car and money. You can then go somewhere else and book in."

"Giles this is all great, but is it really going to work?" She asked doubtfully.

"It's all we have." The Watcher replied before reluctantly ending the call.

"Their options are limited." Fred glanced up at the high-backed chair in front of him. "We have people out looking for the car and as requested your friend is keeping an eye on any credit card advances." He continued looking down at his hands for a moment. "I should really be getting back to Ruth's aunt with some kind of explanation or reasoning for what has happened."

"There is little to explain." Came the reply from the chair, though the figure in it didn't move into view. "Her nieces friends abducted her, all you are doing is trying your best as the caring counselor you are to find her and return her to her family."

"But she saw how Elizabeth was in the hotel, she's curious as to what is going on, both at the manor and with Willow, I hardly need remind you how important it is that we try our hardest to keep Elizabeth at the manor." Fred frowned.

"I think we both know that that isn't a factor anymore Mr. Waltham, the manor has served its purpose, for once I cannot believe how easy the Council have made this for me." The reply was sure, almost smug. "All we need to do know is claim our prizes."

"Willow and Elizabeth are people, human beings not objects or possessions." Fred objected.

"This is hardly the time for a change of heart Mr. Waltham." The speaker admonished lightly.

"Have you begun to doubt our cause?" The question was asked seriously.

"No." Fred was quick to reply. "But we have the proof we need now that the two of them together possess great strength and potential, couldn't we simply ask them to co-operate? Share with them our vision?"

A low laugh rumbled from the seated figure.

"My dear, dear boy." The man tutted slightly as he spoke. "I had hoped you would grow and learn the true nature of ambition if I were to introduce you to it gently, but I see that I hoped in vain. Miss. Rosenberg would never offer me her services voluntarily." He clarified. "I am afraid we have a past that rather colors things between us." He added. "And as for Miss. Mann, well…" He paused. "I hardly see her agreeing to focus and hone her skills for specific purposes, I rather get the impression she sees her gifts as more of a curse than a blessing." The figure in the chair leaned forward and picked up a crystal glass filled with brandy. "No, I am afraid we have no choice in how we proceed, to have full co-operation from them both, we need at least one of them with us, should we say, under duress." He pointed out.

"So the other will come to us willingly." Fred reasoned.

"Exactly." The seated figure sat back in his chair sipping his drink. "So we watch and wait?" He asked for clarification.

"We watch and wait." His companion agreed. "Mr. Waltham." He paused. "Fred." He continued in a softer, quieter tone, "I understand after the unfortunate outcome of the fire that you are somewhat more reluctant about our plans, but what Morgana did to herself was no more predictable than a shooting star or an earthquake. The young witch obviously hated herself more than we realized."

"The police are treating the death as suspicious." Fred pointed out.

"Because the local constabulary have such a clear understand of witchcraft and the supernatural don't they Mr. Waltham?" The speaker admonished again. "They will in time come to see that Morgana was just a young lady with a bitter and jealous rivalry with Elizabeth Mann, a jealousy that was riled further when Miss. Rosenberg arrived and took Elizabeth's attention from her. Unable to live with the two of them, she chose to take Miss. Mann's life, then realizing what she had done took her own as well. You are not responsible for her death Fred, you haven't hurt or betrayed anyone." He assured the other man.

"I just didn't think Morgana was capable of this." Fred admitted.

"None of us truly know what another is capable of Mr. Waltham. Now, I agree that it is unfortunate that our plan to separate our two young witches has failed but I must also admit that this does not only have a negative meaning for us. At least this shows us that the two share a bond of deep friendship which is essential for our future plans." Leaning forward again the now empty glass was replaced on the small round table beside the chair. "As Elizabeth is the weaker of the two I still propose that she should be the focus for our efforts, I am not sure we are ready to subdue and hold Miss. Rosenberg just yet."

"Do you have a plan?" Fred pushed.

"Not of yet, watch and wait Mr. Waltham." Came the reply and then silence.

Fred waited for a long moment and then turned to leave, as he walked across the wooden floor to the door the seated figure calling his name stopped him.

"Don't let Miss Mann's aunt leave the area." He instructed. "And make sure you keep in touch with Ripper." He added. "I like to know what all the game pieces on this particular board are doing."

With a final grunt of agreement Fred slipped out of the room.

"A Mini?" Buffy stared incredulously at the tiny navy blue Mini that Anya got out of. "What the hell? Can you even fit three people in that?" She screwed up her nose.

"It's more than comfortable and it doesn't have a stick you have to worry about. It's fully automatic and it has a CD player." The demon defended her choice as she walked around the front of the car and held out the keys to the Slayer. "Where are the witches?" She added.

"The washroom, Ruth's feeling blecky." Buffy replied taking the keys and slipping them into her pocket.

"Hardly surprising." The vengeance demon assessed. "I have money." She added digging her hand into her purse and pulling out an alarming amount of notes. "I used various accounts."

"How much did you get?" Buffy stared as Anya handed over the cash.

"A thousand." Anya replied.

"A thousand!" Buffy squeaked and stared at the money in her hands. "Anya how the hell did you get one thousand pounds out of bank accounts? I don't have a thousand pounds."

"Giles does, well he did." Anya shrugged. "Just because you're on the lamb doesn't mean you have to live like criminals." She smiled brightly.

"I have to say Ruth chose a nice city, Oxford is lovely." Anya glanced around the hotel parking lot. "Though this isn't the nicest hotel."

"We're not staying here." Buffy countered. "Giles told us to go somewhere else, just in case the cab driver gets found and questioned or anything."

"This is all so exciting." Anya clapped her hands together and beamed. "I mean I didn't want to come to boring old England for Christmas, but who'd have thought it would be this exciting?"

"Anya this isn't exactly helping." Buffy pointed out. "Whoever or whatever is going on isn't good."

"Well no." Anya paused for a moment. "But we'll work it out, it's what we do, find the bad guys, make them pay, and all is right with the world."

"Just like it was with the troika?" Buffy arched an eyebrow.

This caused the vengeance demon to pause.

"Well hopefully without the death of one of us and Willow going all apocalypsy." She reasoned.

"Exactly." Buffy stopped as behind her the hotel doors opened and Willow came out helping Ruth to walk. "How you doing?" She looked sympathetically at the pair.

"Been better." Willow replied frowning slightly. "Anya, hi." She added glancing at the demon.

"I brought you a car and money." Anya smiled.

"Keep it down Anya." Buffy hissed as she stepped forward and pulled open the back door of the mini and helped Willow ease Ruth inside, the redhead hurried around and got in the other side.

"She doesn't look good." Anya pointed out when she and Buffy moved back away from the car.

"Which one." Buffy replied with a soft shrug noting how both of the witches looked washed out and pale.

"Oh I forgot." Anya reached into her pocket and pulled out a small mobile phone. "I got you this too, though do you know how hard it is to shop on Boxing Day in England." She handed it over. "I've programmed Dawn's number into the memory, it means you can contact us at any time." She added. "It was my idea." She pointed out proudly. "So you don't have to worry about fighting with vandalized telephone boxes or small change."

"Thank you Anya, really." Buffy smiled and pocketed the phone. "I'll be in touch when we're somewhere safe." She walked to the car and pulled open the driver's door. "Tell Giles we need research and tell Dawn not to do anything stupid." She climbed in. "We'll talk soon." She pulled the door closed.

Anya nodded and watched as the small blue car pulled out of the hotel forecourt before turning back into the hotel to head towards the washrooms to teleport back to Giles' house.
