The Perfect Man (* 1/2)
There's not much that's tender, appealing, warm or funny about The Perfect Man, though it has been billed in some circles as a romantic comedy. Aside from having some familiar television faces like Heather Locklear, Hilary Duff and Chris Noth in the cast, as well as Caroline Rhea, there's little that distinguishes this from a prototype Lifetime film other than what you see on that network is usually better than this.
Locklear plays Jean Hamilton, a woman unable to find that elusive "perfect" partner. She's constantly on the move, since every time a relationship breaks up, she takes her children and uproots to another city. The latest relocation takes them to Brooklyn. Her oldest daughter Holly (Duff) meets a new friend Amy (Vanessa Lengies) that has a charming and available Uncle Ben (Noth). But soon Hamilton has two prospects to choose from, Ben and Lenny (Michael O'Malley), a baker and the proverbial "nice guy."
If the film included some minimal character development, family interaction beyond superficial scheming and argument, and a semblance of a plot that made some sense, The Perfect Man could have proven perfectly acceptable. But none of those things are the case, especially the thematic and conceptual items. Duff's character in particular does a host of unexplainable, often just dumb things - none of them remotely humorous - all supposedly geared toward helping her mother. Perhaps the most notable feat is the fact Mark Rosman stretched this out to 100 minutes, because there isn't even a half hour's worth of storyline. The Perfect Man probably won't be the year's worst outing, but it may end up among the prime contenders for the title.
