What do you expect from the opposite gender? |
Gender roles have changed over the course of the last two or three decades, and what we expect from the opposite gender also has. Or has it? Do men just want a housekeeper for a partner, someone who cleans, cooks and stays at home? And do women just want a tough, strong guy who brings enough money home so the family can make a good living? Well, not anymore. Men today are expected to be strong but handsome, tough but caring, intelligent, decisive, sensitive, warm, caring and most important they need a good sense of humor. Well, that´s at least what women say. ;) Qualities like the ability to assert oneself or a materialistic attitude are not requested.
Men on the other hand want an independant, assertive women with an own job and the ability to take care of herself. To sum up, one can say that men are expected to adopt qualities that are traditionally more associated with women and vice versa. But if we have a look at reality, how many men have their equal share in housework or child care, and how many women do get paid the same wages for equal work? Well, not many. Ideals may have changed, but real life shows that we still have a lot of work to do.
Joss Whedon and Marti Noxon have declared Buffy the Vampire Slayer to be a show with a feministic attitude right from the beginning and this of course has shown in the interpersonal relationships between the caracters or the role they play in the Scoobie Gang. Buffy and Willow clearly are stronger than Giles or Xander, who occupy roles in the group which are normally occupied by women in traditional storytelling. Though Giles serves as a father figure for Buffy, all he can offer is advise and guidance, Xander on the other hand is "the heart of the group" who only has mediocre ability to phisically support Buffy or Willow when it comes to a dangerous fight. Riley struggles to accept Buffy´s strength, which makes him feel inferior as he cannot be the protector for "his girl". And even Anya takes actions which are normally quite unlikely for a girl/women: She approaches Xander, which is something that despite many decades of feminist movement is still highly unusual. But it´s a lot of fun to watch.
Spike and Harmonay have a more traditional relationship. Doesn´t work too well though...
