Exclusive: Interview with Keith R. A. DeCandido

You wrote a lot novels about Mutant Enemy Characters. How did it start?
Very strangely, actually. Christopher Golden and Nancy Holder were working on the first of the WATCHERS GUIDEs, and they were falling behind on their deadline. I'd been working with Chris on several projects -- I was the editor on his X-Men and Daredevil novels -- and he knew I was a fan of the show, and he and Nancy asked if I could help out with some extra work on the WATCHERS GUIDE. Naturally, I said yes. That led me to be able to pitch to Pocket, and I then did the first of the two XANDER YEARS novelizations.
Are you "Fan" of these Shows?
Very much so, yes. I was a fan of BUFFY going back to the movie, and the TV show was light-years better. I became a fan of ANGEL and FIREFLY on the strength of BUFFY. And, having been watching old episodes of the show as research for my new BUFFY book, I'm impressed with the show all over again.
Have you any favorite Episodes on Buffy, Angel or Firefly?
My favorite BUFFY episode is probably "Fool for Love," though "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered" is right up there, as is "Hush." Favorite ANGEL is probably "Smile Time" for the sheer entertainment value, though I love watching "Darla." Favorite FIREFLY is definitely "Trash."
Your next Buffy Novel is about Nikky Wood? Are there any "lies my parents didnt told me"?
I'm not sure what you mean by that, but my listed favorite BUFFY episode should clue you in to my fondness for the character. BLACKOUT will be expanding on what we learned in "Fool for Love," "Lies My Parents Told Me," as well as several other BUFFY and ANGEL episodes relating to Nikki, Drusilla, and Spike. The book also gives me a chance to write about New York City in the 1970s, which is both where and when I grew up.
 You wrote the Novel to the Serenity Movie, did you saw the Movie?
Yes, though I wrote the book based on the script. I didn't see a rough cut of the film until after the book was mostly finished, and I was only able to make small changes to the manuscript -- for example, until I saw the rough cut, I had no idea that Shepherd Book's look had changed, so I had to change the descriptions of him with a ponytail and mustache to that of him with cornrows and a goatee. Other changes were not possible to make that late in the game.
Now you work on Mirror Image a novel about Firefly. Can you tell us something about?
No, because that book doesn't actually exist, Amazon.com listing notwithstanding. Pocket is under contract to publish two more SERENITY novels, and several proposals are sitting over at Universal and Mutant Enemy awaiting word, including one of mine (though it won't be called MIRROR IMAGE), but we've received no word from Joss and the gang as of this writing.
Who got the idea to continue the show in novels?
That's a common practice these days, actually: Pocket's deal with Universal was to do the novelization and two original novels to follow up. Other publishers have done that with film properties, including MEN IN BLACK and UNDERWORLD.
Brett Matthews also writing a 3part Comic Series about Serenity. Do you stay in touch?
Never met the man, actually, though we will both be at the Big Damned Flanvention in Burbank in early December; I'm looking forward to talking to him, actually.
