-Ratings Breakdown:
On this pivotal Wednesday populated with Fox’s American Idol, NBC’s Deal or No Deal, three series premieres (Fox’s Unam1mous, ABC’s The Evidence and NBC’s Heist), new time periods for CBS’ Out of Practice and Courting Alex and NBC’s Law & Order, and an original episode of ABC’s Lost, Fox held the top spot. And that was because of…all together now…American Idol, and a better than expected Bones from 8-9 p.m. Opposite a dominant Wednesday edition of NBC’s Deal or No Deal, Bones opened with a competitive second-place 7.6/12 in the overnights, 11.08 million viewers and a 4.0/11 among adults 18-49. Deal or No Deal won the 8 p.m. hour with a 9.4/14 in the overnights, 14.84 million viewers and a 5.1/14 among adults 18-49.

Still 8 p.m.:
Competing ABC comedies George Lopez and Freddie, which are also nothing to boast about, beat the CBS duds with George Lopez at a 5.1/ 8 in the overnights (#3), 7.30 million viewers (#3) and a 2.8/ 8 among adults 18-49 (#3) at 8 p.m., followed by Freddie at an also third-place 5.2/ 8 in the overnights, 7.76 million viewers and a 3.3/ 8 among adults 18-49 at 8:30 p.m.

Opposite American Idol and Unam1mous, NBC’s Law & Order moved into the competitive Wednesday 9 p.m. time period with a disappointing fourth-place 7.4/11 in the overnights, 8.95 million viewers and a 2.6/ 6 among adults 18-49. Although no one should have expected much from Law & Order opposite ABC’s Lost (Overnights: #2, 10.5/15; Viewers: #2, 15.98 million; A18-49: #2, 6.6/15) and the aforementioned American Idol, it wasn’t enough to even come close to competing CBS sleeper Criminal Minds.

Also in the 9 p.m. hour was UPN’s disappointing Veronica Mars (Overnights: #5, 1.9/ 3; Viewers: #6, 2.58 million; A18-49: #6, 1.2/ 3), and a repeat of the WB’s Gilmore Girls (Overnights: #6, 1.6/ 2; Viewers: #6, 2.02 million; A18-49: #6, 0.8/ 2). To the fans of Veronica Mars: sorry, but retention out of America’s Next Top Model of just 40 percent in the overnights, and 50 percent in total viewers and adults 18-49 lands it in the loser’s listing. Hey CW – are you really picking up the cutesy sleuth?
