Chapter One
What?
“Bloody Hell!”
Buffy woke with a start, at first not realizing what it was that had disturbed her slumber. Or even where she was, for that matter.
“Bloody buggerin’ fuck!“
Raising herself up to lean back on her elbows, Buffy slowly reoriented herself to her surroundings.
Bed. Check.
Hotel room. Check.
Angel. Check. Wait…
Where was her boyfriend? When they finally settled down to sleep at ten o’clock that night he was right beside her. A quick glance toward the bathroom proved that he wasn’t in there, either.
More yelling from down the hall, consisting mostly of unintelligible British curse words so it was clear who was having the fit out there. It did not, however, explain why he was out there in the first place nor did it explain where Angel was.
The guards outside should have prevented anyone leaving their rooms. Where were the guards? Where the hell was Angel?
And why was that annoying British man screaming at someone down their hotel hallway?
She glanced at the bright red numbers on the bedside alarm clock. 3am.
God! This is so annoying!
Wrapping her robe around her Buffy decided to chance peeking into the hallway to see what was going on down there and perhaps find Angel in the process. She didn’t want to call attention to his absence yet for fear of bringing down the wrath of their keepers for a breach of the rules. But curiosity was killing her and she wasn’t going to get back to sleep any time soon at this rate.

“Sir, you need to go back to your room now.”
Spike ran his fingers through his hair and called up every ounce of patience he could muster. There were a lot of things he wanted to do right now, but going back in his room was not one of them. He didn’t understand why this bloody wanker couldn’t see that.
“Look, I get there are rules, but clearly the rules have already been broken so I don’t see what the bloody hell me going back in my room is gonna accomplish right now. You can do whatever the hell you want to but I am goin’ down there and find out what’s happenin’ --”
A door opened down the hall and if it wasn’t the devil herself! Spike made to move toward where the blonde girl was timidly entering the hallway but the guard blocked him easily.
“You!“ he glared at her. “Where is she?”
“What?” Buffy looked uncertainly between the angry British man and the guard. “Who?”
Spike remembered just in time to avoid names, and instead snapped, “My girl! Where is she?”
Buffy was thoroughly confused and more than a little irritated. How should she know where that idiot’s psycho girlfriend was?
Spike could see the confusion on the blonde’s face and thought not for the first time that she might be a little slow on the uptake. Perhaps speaking more slowly would help her understand what he wanted from her.
“Look, I just want to know what the big poof told you about what was goin’ on, yeah? Can you at least answer that much? From safely on your side of the hallway,” he turned to the unhappy guard, “If that won’t be too much to ask.” He breathed deep and slow, trying to rein in his temper long enough to get the information he wanted from these impossible people.
Buffy was confused and worried about breaking the rules now. Angel would kill her if she messed this up by breaking the rules at this point. She looked to the guard for permission to talk, and he gave her a grudging nod.
“All right. I have no idea what you’re talking about. Who is the big poof, and what is he supposed to have told me about your girlfriend?”
It was then that Spike realized that the blonde girl was in the dark still. He took a brief moment to lament both her stupidity and the bombshell he was about to lay on her. He held up the letter he had been holding with a death grip and silently asked permission to share it with the blonde girl.
The guard sighed deeply and nodded permission. They really didn’t pay him enough for nights like this one. Not that there had ever been a night like this one before.
Spike moved closer to Buffy and handed her the letter.
For long silent minutes Buffy read the letter, then read it again, then read it again. It wasn’t until the fourth reading that the words finally sank in. She let the page drop from her fingers and stared wide eyed at the intense angry man before her and whispered, “Bloody hell.”

Author’s Note: This story uses the general premise of a particular popular game show and because of the nature of that show I am going to be borrowing heavily from actual places and tasks used in the show. Inventing entirely new ones would be overwhelming. The amount of research I’d have to do to get the details for the entire game right would be horrendous, plus the actual participants have confidentiality agreements that prevent them from dishing too much about what goes on so there isn’t any definitive work out there to follow for foolproof game rules and activities. It’s all gleaned from interviews and posting boards and what is shown through edited broadcasts. Anyway, don’t look for complete accuracy here, I’m making up a lot of this as I go, but I will be borrowing locations and tasks to a degree also. I hope I was able to vague that up enough for you, and I also hope that you’ll give this story a chance and see what I can do with it. Next chapter coming very very soon.
