This is a getting to know Kate episode and this works although I'm not sure that going on about her life history in a speech about her farther was very sensitive (I guess the writer is being ironic). The premise the is the element that lets the episode down and Kate's revelations about her mother dying still seem contrived. Despite this qualm the character of Kate works and I like her. I'm also glad that we are not just seeing Angel asking for favours without returning any.The episode is also largely a humour/irony episode and this works and is a major plus point. From the initial killing of the giant serpenty-thing (I didn't catch what Doyle called it) to the irony of Angel asking Cordy to say please the episode is full of delicious comedy moments.
