  • Character

Sarah Michelle Gellar plays the cool, hard-hitting vampire Slayer, Buffy Anne Summers, on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Her character started out as your average California teenager, then at the age of 15, she found out that she was the Slayer. A destiny of fighting demons, vampires and saving the world from evil is not every teenager's idea of fun. After she finally accepted it, she fought evil creatures in L.A., and eventually got expelled from her school for buring down the school gym. It was filled with vampires, though.

Along with her mother, Buffy moved to Sunnydale, California, also known as the Hellmouth. After meeting some new friends, Willow and Xander, and meeting her new Watcher, Giles. Over the seasons, Buffy developed a relationship with a vampire with a soul named, Angel. Their forbidden love struggled over the years through countless obstacles that the fates throw at them. In the "Becoming" season finale, Buffy was kicked out of the house, expelled from school, and stabbed Angel with a sword, sending him to Hell. She saved the world again, but then fled the city to find a new life.

After her return, Buffy dealt with a new, troublesome Slayer sent to help and the return of her lover, Angel, from Hell. The new Slayer, Faith, turned to the dark side, Angel broke up with her to give her a better life, and the town's Mayor turned out to be over a hundred years old, with intentions of destroying the town of Sunnydale. Angel's life was threatened by poison and Buffy's blood saved him. Weak, but determined Buffy went on to defeat the Mayor (in a giant snake form) by blowing up the school.

Throughout her first year at College, Buffy struggled to deal with the new pressures, new responsibilities, and new struggles to be normal. After being used by one guy, Buffy became more cautious as to who she opened her heart too. She found a nice guy, grad student Riley Finn who showed promise. The two slowly built a relationship, which was both fueled and troubled by the fact that Riley was also in the business of fighting evil. He worked for the governement to capture and study the demonic creatures of Sunnydale.

Angel made a couple of visits in Buffy's life fourth season, but despite some fights, the two ended on a positive note. Once Buffy became involved with Riley, her friends took the back seat. By the end of the season though, that was repaired and the Scooby Gang was back to normal. A lot of evil was fought, the biggest of all being Adam: a creature that was made of man, demon and machine. With the combined power of her friends, Buffy was able to summon new Slayer powers and defeat Adam.

In season 5, Riley and Buffy's relationship had hit a hard reality, Buffy was super and Riley was ordinary. He couldn't deal and went to a local vamp house to have his blood sucked. Riley left after Buffy found out to be part of a top secret mission in the governtment. Buffy still doesn't know where he is.

Glory, Buffy's strongest opponent yet, was a god in a different dimension. She came to Sunnydale in season 5 hoping to find "The Key" to her dimension so she could get back. "The Key" happened to be Buffy's sister Dawn who was sent to Buffy so she could protect her from Glory. Dawn is now 15 dealing with the ups and downs of teenager life as well as life with the scoobies. Glory successfully captured Dawn and proceeded to use her to open up the door between dimensions only to be foiled by Buffy seconds before Hell bled onto earth. The only way for the door to be closed was with Dawn's blood...or Buffy's. In order to save the world AGAIN, Buffy jumped through the portal and sacrificed herself for her friends, her sister and the world. Her last words to her sister were "The hardest thing in this world, is to live in it."

After a whole summer without Buffy her friends grow impatient and decide to bring Buffy back with a spell. They bring her back and she has to claw her way out of the grave. Buffy comes back to life a little bit different than how she left it, she came back from heaven and is living in her own personal hell because she was expelled from heaven. She kept this horrible secret from everyone except Spike until "Once More With Feeling" when she just couldn't hold her true feelings in anymore. Buffy is devoid of human feelings and emotion and ignores the fact that Willow is falling into a dark addiction to magic. As Willow grows more dependant on magic, Buffy grows more attached to Spike, her ex-nemesis and eventually their feelings come to a shocking turning point and they give in to their lust, which she later admits was a huge mistake.
