Angel Season V Episode #106: "Origin" Episode Guide

This summary is the intellectual property of Loey

A nice, middle-class couple shows up at Wolfram & Hart with a problem. It seems that their teenaged son got hit by a van. Not only did it look like the van's driver wanted to hit him, but the kid brushed off the incident with barely a scratch on him.

It's Connor, who is now a happy and well-adjusted young man. Even learning that he has superhuman abilities - which include the ability to pummel demons - doesn't seem to faze him much. He's slightly more rattled when he finds out that the "accident" was orchestrated by a warlock named Cyvus Vale, who wants Connor to become aware of his power. Vale has the demon Sahjhan, who fans may remember from Season 3, trapped in an urn. This is not sufficient, and Vale wants Connor to free Sahjhan and kill him once and for all. Nobody else can do this, as per the prophecy that got Sahjhan involved in Connor's life in the first place.

Of course, Angel doesn't want any part of such nonsense, but Vale has ways of making him cooperate. Namely, he has a device that will undo the memory wipes that were performed on Connor (and nearly everyone else) at the end of last season. Seems that Vale was the one W&H hired to do the mind flip, and he can cause it to be undone on anyone within range of his little friend.

Angel reluctantly agrees to the plan, and begins training Connor, who is enthusiastic, if unsure of himself. They go to Vale's mansion, where Vale traps Connor alone in a room with Sahjhan. Apparently, becoming a nice boy has diminished Connor's fighting skills somewhat, and Sahjhan throws him around like a rag doll.

Suddenly, it's Wesley to the rescue! OK, not exactly. OK, not at all. He has gotten back to work after a pep talk from Angel, who assigns Spike to start "testing" Illyria's powers (speaking of getting thrown around like a rag doll...). Nobody's having any luck rescuing Gunn from suburbia, except for Marcus, who actually offers to free him (Gunn refuses the offer). Consequently, Wes has a lot of time on his hands, which leads him to the paperwork on Vale's involvement with W&H, and he immediately assumes that Angel made some deal to sacrifice Fred in order to save Connor. He arrives at Vale's place with Illyria and nabs the device. Over Angel's protestations, he smashes it.

All the memories come flooding back, although it's unclear whether the thing has any mental effect on Connor. It seems to have a physical effect, as he turns around and slices Sahjhan's head clean off.

The next day, Connor comes to see Angel. They chat cordially, and Connor seems to have accepted his new role as a sort-of superhero. He wants to get back to his regular life and help out his parents, though, so he says goodbye. He also mentions that he has learned the importance of taking care of your family - from his father.

Angel doesn't quite know what to make of this. He watches Connor leave, and as the elevator doors open, Connor looks back at him silently.
