Angel Season V Episode #107: "Time Bomb" Episode Guide

This summary is the intellectual property of Loey

Illyria inexplicably begins shifting around in time and space. She can already do the dimension-hopping thing - she busts Gunn out of the 'burbs that way - but this is different.

Downside? She discovers that the gang intends to kill her, since she's so powerful and unstable. So she decides to kill them first. In one timeline, she succeeds, but things keep jumping around, so the guys are alive, then dead, then alive, etc.

Illyria's assumptions aren't really off the mark, either. Wesley has discovered that, in a nutshell, Fred's body can't contain Illyria's power. She's about to go nuclear on their asses, wiping out half of L.A. while she's at it. Angel instructs Wes to find a way to off her before she blows.

Angel ends up riding Illyria's time-travelling coattails, and he realizes what's going on. It turns out that Wesley never had any intention of killing her, anyway, since he's found a method of diminishing her power while still keeping her alive. In his own twisted way, he "needs" her, and doesn't want her dead.

Illyria is disinclined to believe that the guys have good intentions, but it's a moot point, as she finally starts to melt down. Once she understands that she can stay alive, albeit in a weaker state, she isn't much happier. Wesley shoots her with the ray gun anyway, and it works. She won't hop dimensions or any other Matrix-y looking stuff, and her strength won't be as great as it was, but she'll still be Illyria, and still possibly problematic.

During their wigged-out sojourns together, Illyria offers Angel some advice on running his "kingdom," reminding him that (in her experience) a true leader has to be ruthless and amoral. For some reason, Angel heeds these admonitions, and puts it to use with the latest W&H client. It's a demon cult whose leaders have made an agreement with a young human woman to take her baby and raise it as the group's messiah. There will be a ritual sacrifice when the child reaches a certain age, and Gunn - newly committed to doing the right thing, if still disoriented from his recent experience - is trying to find loopholes to get the woman out of the deal.

Angel strides in and demands that the agreement be honored. Gunn is confused, wondering just what Angel thinks he's doing. His job, Angel replies. Serving their clients.
