Gunn wants Angel and/or Spike to take a case involving the body of an important demon honcho. If they retrieve it and get it back to L.A. in time, they can avert a major turf war between some powerful clans. Neither of them really wants to go, until they find out that the body is currently in Rome. Where Buffy lives. Where Angel has someone spying on her. Where some fellow named The Immortal has been seen hanging around her apartment.
This Immortal guy is an old enemy of Spike and Angel, and they assume he's trying to kill a Slayer, lure Angel to Rome for a showdown, and start a demon war. So, naturally, they hop in the company jet and make for Europe.
Although they have just over a day to get the demon leader's body and get home, their first priority is knocking on Buffy's door. She's not there, but Andrew is - his place got destroyed during some unnamed incident, so he's crashing there for a while. Oh, and Buffy is not being threatened by The Immortal. She's being romanced by him.
Angel and Spike are shocked by this. Not because it's unheard of, but because it's happened before - The Immortal once seduced Darla and Drusilla while holding the boys captive for a few days. He's hot, morally ambiguous, and lives forever. As we all know, a lot of women really dig that. Especially women who also like Angel and Spike.
So, the dynamic duo start searching the nightclubs, making a brief stop to pick up the demon's body on the way (turns out it's just the head, but it will grow new parts if taken to L.A. quickly enough). Naturally, they lose the precious item about 5 minutes after spotting Buffy from a distance at one of the clubs. They also discover that they're being double-crossed, and the head has been stolen.
Spike recalls that there is a Wolfram & Hart branch in Rome, so they go there for help. The place is exactly like the one in L.A., except everybody smokes and talks like Chico Marx. The babe who runs the place already knows about the theft, and makes arrangements for Angel and Spike to exchange a suitcase full of money for it, once she gets them to shut up about Buffy and The Immortal.
They go to the exchange location, only to get double-crossed again when the head is replaced by a bomb, which blows up Spike's jacket (poor baby). The W&H lady promises to take care of everything, and the guys decide to give up and go home.
After one last stop at Buffy's place. She's not home yet, and Andrew is getting ready to go out. He advises them that Buffy has moved on, and although she'll always have feelings for them and may even get back with one of them someday, she needs space to have some fun on her own right now. He emerges from the bedroom in a tux and answers a knock at the door. People change, he points out, as he prepares to leave with the two beautiful women (?!) who have come to pick him up.
Thoroughly dejected, Angel and Spike return to L.A., where they discover that The Immortal has sent the head along, with a note sending his "regards." A discussion follows about how nice it would be to imprison Buffy or put some spell on her so she couldn't get away from them, but they agree it could never work. Time to get over it and get on with their lives.
Theoretically, anyway. They don't look to be in much of a hurry.
While all this is going on, Wesley is dealing with an incredibly crappy turn of events. Fred's parents show up without warning, stopping over in L.A. on their way to a Hawaiian vacation. Wes is about to tell them what has happened to Fred, but Illyria puts a stop to it....by disguising herself as Fred and entertaining the Burkles as if nothing had happened. The ruse works and the folks leave happy.
Wesley, on the other hand, is disturbed and repulsed by this display (as was I, frankly). Illyria has found the experience fascinating, and wishes to "explore further" the obvious fact that Wesley still has feelings for her/it/whatever. Wes rejects the offer soundly and insists that Illyria never, ever, ever pretend to be Fred again.
