Prologue
1 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— ANGEL’S SUITE— NIGHT 1
ANGEL sits in his room, sketching an image of the Beast. A knock at the
door and LORNE enters with a tray.
LORNE
Room service. Hey. Got you some nice O+ here. Freshly
nuked for that “right out of the jugular” taste.
ANGEL
Just put it on the table.
Lorne sets the tray down and looks at the drawing.
LORNE
Hmm… good likeness. You wouldn’t mind if I ran
screaming from the room, would you?
ANGEL
Shut the door on your way out.
LORNE
Oh, all right. You want to play it this way, we’ll play it this
way.
ANGEL
Play what?
LORNE
Angel, sweetie, why so down? [as Angel] Don’t interrupt
me, I’m brooding.
ANGEL
I’m not brooding. I’m researching.
LORNE
The apocalyptic beast who’s turned our city into his
personal abattoir? Yeah, so is everybody else— Wesley
included— downstairs. Together.
ANGEL
I work better alone..ANGEL

LORNE
(laughs)
Oh, that’s it. I see. It’s all about you. Silly old Lorne,
thinking it was about saving the world from ending.
Welcome to the big leagues, Angel. You’re a champion.
You don’t get personal days.
ANGEL
There’s nothing on this Beast, Lorne. I fought it once and it
nearly decapitated me with my own stake. It’s killed
hundreds of people that I couldn’t save and it keeps
showing up around my kid. My kid who’s—
LORNE
Not entirely un-making with the moves on the girl who
might have been?
Angel stands up and gets into Lorne’s face.
ANGEL
You want to shove that into English for me?
Lorne doesn’t flinch.
LORNE
I know about Connor and Cordelia. It’s a… vibe. It’s a
thing. I know. What can I say?
ANGEL
You can say goodbye. Take a hike..ANGEL

LORNE
Connor’s still going to be your son, you know… when it’s
all said and done. And you may not find perfect happiness
with Cordelia but, Angelfood, you gotta remember,
there’s other fish in the sea.
He walks out and leaves Angel alone to think things over.
CUT TO:
2 EXT. LOS ANGELES OIL FIELDS— NIGHT 2
GWEN RAIDEN makes her way through the dark among the churning oil
derricks. She stops and looks around as if expecting someone but no one’s
there. She turns around and looks behind her.
ASHET
(o.s.)
Miss Raiden.
She turns to find MR. ASHET, a man clothed in African tribal dress, wearing
dark sunglasses, where there was no one moments before.
GWEN
Mr. Ashet. It’s an honor to finally meet you.
ASHET
Yes, I suppose it would be.
GWEN
I apologize for your long journey when I can’t offer better
news..ANGEL

ASHET
You haven’t changed your mind?
GWEN
Mr. Ashet, I understand the amulets you want acquired are
very valuable.
ASHET
Yes, that’s because they are extremely rare and powerful
protective amulets.
GWEN
Yeah, and considering the holy-roller Revelations party
that seems to be going on lately, I can see why you might
want them. But as juicy as the commission is… I’ve got this
problem wherein…
He takes off his glasses to reveal a set of inhuman eyes. They bore into
her. Gwen falters, then continues.
GWEN
I’m very respectfully going on vacation to Tahiti, sir.
ASHET
You have no idea who I am, do you, Miss Raiden. Or of the
dire importance of recent events.
GWEN
I know enough to go to Tahiti.
ASHET
Well said. Perhaps then I won’t kill you for your—
He suddenly screams and Gwen stumbles backward as a massive fist
punches through Ashet’s chest from behind. Gwen looks up to find the
BEAST towering over her..ANGEL

It smiles at her before hitting her with a blow that hurls her 50 feet.
She lands on the ground in a crumpled heap and watches as the Beast rips
its hand back out of Ashet. Brilliant white light streams from the gaping
hole in Ashet’s chest as he collapses to the ground. The Beast kneels down
over him, reaches into the blindingly bright hole and removes a small
metallic object from inside Ashet.
Holding the object in one hand, the Beast looks up at Gwen who removes
her gloves, preparing to do battle. Electricity arcs between her fingers but
when she gets to her feet, she finds the Beast is gone. Only the crumpled
body of Ashet remains.
Opening credit sequence.
Act I
3 INT. CONNOR’S APARTMENT— MORNING 3
CONNOR sits in the window, listening to sirens race by down below as
CORDELIA stirs and wakes. She is sleeping on the floor, covered by
blankets.
CORDELIA
Close one?
CONNOR
(nods)
Four blocks over..ANGEL

CORDELIA
They’re getting more frequent. A couple of times last night
I even dreamt I heard—
CONNOR
Screaming. It wasn’t a dream. Things are falling apart out
there.
CORDELIA
It’s not your fault, you know.
He just shrugs.
CONNOR
We should go over to the hotel today. Talk to my dad. See
if they found out anything new about the Beast.
CORDELIA
They would have told us if they had. Probably just safer if
we stay put. [groans] Wish I’d known you weren’t going to
take your turn on the bed. Maybe I wouldn’t have this
achy floor neck.
CONNOR
I didn’t want to sleep there without you.
CORDELIA
Oh, boy…
CONNOR
I heard that.
CORDELIA
I’m sure you did.
CONNOR
It’s the super-hearing.
CORDELIA
Whatever you say.
She gets up and walks over to the shelves, looking through the supplies.
CONNOR
Kinda makes you wonder where I got it from.
CORDELIA
I’m going to go wash up. Have you seen my—.ANGEL

She turns around and he’s right there with a towel for her, having crossed
the room silently in an instant.
CORDELIA
—towel.
CONNOR
Super-speed… and super-strength, too.
CORDELIA
Connor, we’ve been cooped up here together for two days
straight.
CONNOR
Because you won’t take me back to the hotel. They don’t
want me there, do they? Angel doesn’t want me there. It’s
because they think I’m connected to the Beast. It’s why
you don’t want me, either.
CORDELIA
Angel knows we slept together. That’s why you can’t go
back to the hotel.
CONNOR
(shocked)
He—
CORDELIA
He knows, Connor. All right? With his super-smelling and
super-tom-peeping and… I don’t even know what else
but… he knows. And he’s extremely upset with both of us
right now.
CONNOR
We didn’t do anything wrong..ANGEL

CORDELIA
We hurt him. That’s enough.
Cordelia’s eyes suddenly go wide and she sees a flash of the Beast with
screams of terror and agony in the background.
CONNOR
What is it? A vision? What do you see?
CORDELIA
Nothing. I… I have to see Angel.
Cordelia puts on her shoes and grabs her coat. Connor shakes his head in
disgust.
CONNOR
How do you know I’ll be here when you get back? Aren’t
you afraid I’m going to run off and join the demon?
CORDELIA
I trust you, Connor.
She walks past him and out the door.
CUT TO:
4 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— LOBBY— DAY 4
GUNN paces across the lobby, frustrated, while FRED researches.
GUNN
I don’t trust him.
FRED
You can’t say that. Connor hasn’t done anything wrong.
GUNN
Lately. You forgetting Angel’s voyage to the bottom of the
sea?
FRED
Charles, the little girl in that White Room was evil. I felt it.
When she said—
GUNN
“The answer is among you.” Come on! Who else could
Creepylocks have been talking about?.ANGEL

FRED
It was probably just some last-ditch mind game to get the
Beast to come after us instead of her.
GUNN
Baby, that’s another thing. Connor’s gone toe-to-toe with
this guy twice and barely needed a boo-boo kiss
afterward. You telling me that’s not suspicious?
WESLEY appears in the doorway behind them.
WESLEY
Most of us have encountered the demon twice and we’re
still here.
GUNN
Yeah, but we weren’t conveniently born in the exact spot
where that thing hatched.
FRED
“The answer is among you.” Have I mentioned I hate
cryptic messages?
WESLEY
Well, there’s one thing I can decrypt. My sources have
already confirmed that without the little girl, the earthly
contingent of Wolfram & Hart is cut off from the senior
partners. Effectively neutralized. However, it appears that
was not her only function. I’ve just found an entry in
Rhinehardt’s Compendium for that same little girl— or rather
the entity presenting itself as one. Her name is Mesektet.
FRED
Hmm… I figured Tiffany or Brandi..ANGEL

GUNN
So you mean Wolfram & Hart was just a day job?
WESLEY
Sort of. You see, Mesektet was one of five enormously
powerful beings which are linked to an embodiment of the
ancient god Ra.
FRED
(excited)
Which makes them totems, right? Symbolic
manifestations.
WESLEY
Yes, totems which together form an order called the Ra-tet.
Gunn notices how Fred immediately opens up to Wesley when they
brainstorm together. He steps over and puts a possessive arm around
her.
GUNN
Must be big. Never heard of ’em.
WESLEY
That’s because their origins have been shrouded in
mystery since the dawn of time. Only the totems
themselves know their true purpose.
Fred runs over to the computer.
FRED
So maybe he killed this Mesektet for another reason. I’ll hit
the net. Charles, you want to update Angel?
GUNN
Mr. Do-Not-Disturb? Doubt it. Don’t know why we’re
bothering with the ra-ra’s anyway. “The answer is among
you.” Remember?
The door opens and Lorne enters.
LORNE
Bad news, munchkins. Rumor mill has Dr. Feelbad
attached to another slice-and-dice yesterday.
FRED
Who was it?.ANGEL

LORNE
Lovely woman. High and mighty white magick shaman
type. But that didn’t even faze the Beast. Tore her poor
heart right out of her chest.
WESLEY
The M.O. doesn’t match. Mesektet had some sort of
energy sucked from her. He didn’t touch her heart.
FRED
Lorne, you didn’t happen to catch a name, did you? Like
Ma’at?
LORNE
Yeah, that’s the lady.
FRED
Another member of the Ra-tet.
GUNN
He’s taking them out, one by one.
WESLEY
We can’t assume that yet. This Beast has killed hundreds of
people with his bare hands. You throw in the storms and
earthquakes that accompanied the rain of fire, you could
put the death toll in the thousands.
FRED
Wes is right. Statistically it’s still a coincidence. Two
points—
WESLEY
—make a line, not a pattern.
Gunn notes the way Wesley finished Fred’s sentence for her, the way they
seem to be on the same wavelength.
They all look up as Cordelia walks in.
CORDELIA
Hi, guys.
LORNE
Oh, hey, Cordy.
GUNN
What’s up, Cordy?.ANGEL

She just stares at them for a beat, then takes a deep breath.
CORDELIA
Okay… I gotta go see Angel.
She turns and heads up the stairs.
GUNN
You see? I told you Connor can’t be trusted. Look how
weird he’s made her.
CUT TO:
5 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— ANGEL’S SUITE— DAY 5
A knock at the door. Angel looks up from his drawings.
ANGEL
What is it?
CORDELIA
(o.s.)
It’s me. [beat] I know I don’t have to be invited in but it is
polite.
ANGEL
Go away, Cordelia.
The door opens and Cordelia walks in.
CORDELIA
Well, you know that never works.
Angel looks everywhere but at her as she walks over to the chair next to
him and sits down.
CORDELIA
I don’t know where to start.
ANGEL
Then skip to the end where you leave and we don’t talk
about it.
CORDELIA
Aren’t you going to ask how Connor’s doing?
ANGEL
Yeah, like I really want a progress report..ANGEL

CORDELIA
That’s not what I meant. He’s scared to death, Angel.
Scared that you think he’s connected to the Beast.
ANGEL
Well, you know, it does tend to show up whenever he’s
around.
CORDELIA
I swear. Like father, like son. The two of you have
cornered the market on teenage snits. How about you
stop being angry at me—
Angel slams a book down on the desk.
ANGEL
How about you stop pretending to give a damn about my
feelings!
CORDELIA
I do give a damn. In fact, I give a whole lot of damn. That’s
why I came over here. To tell you… get over it.
ANGEL
What?
CORDELIA
I had a vision this morning—
ANGEL
Get over it? Hmmm…
CORDELIA
—of the Beast..ANGEL

ANGEL
You know, I never really thought about that. Get over it!
Why didn’t I think about that, huh? It’s so simple!
She reaches out to touch his face and he seizes her arm.
CORDELIA
Angel, I’m sorry I hurt you. It was the last thing in the
world I wanted to do but you have to get past it. And you
have to get past it now because there are bigger things at
stake. I know it’s not fair but it’s the way it is. People need
you. Your son needs you.
Angel calms down and releases her arm.
ANGEL
Tell me about your vision.
CORDELIA
It was… different from any other. I felt like I was inside
someone else listening to the demon talk but I couldn’t tell
if it was in the past or in the future or even where we were
exactly.
ANGEL
Who was inside you… I mean, who was it you were
inside?
CORDELIA
I couldn’t tell. But I did feel like there was more I wasn’t
getting, like I was just scratching at the surface of
something. Maybe it’ll come to me.
ANGEL
So what did the demon say?
CORDELIA
Don’t know. All I got was the visual.
ANGEL
Not much to go on, Cordy.
CORDELIA
But it’s something! And a vision means the phone lines
between us and the Powers That Be are still open. Maybe
they’ll send us a clue.
ANGEL
As if there’s somebody up there watching..ANGEL

CORDELIA
I was. But I’m back now so you’re going to have to suck it
up and deal because things are going to hell and … and
you’re the leader. So lead.
CUT TO:
6 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— LOBBY— DAY 6
The entire group is gathered: Angel, Wesley, Fred, Cordelia, Lorne and
Gunn.
ANGEL
The Powers are sending us a wake-up call, people. Sure,
we’ve been— I don’t want to say “demolished”— beaten.
And sure it’s slightly demoralizing but from here on out,
we’re on the offensive. We’re going to find out this thing’s
weaknesses, we’re going to go in prepared and we’re
going to fight smart. It’s time to take down the Beast.
FRED
Um… we’re all behind you, Angel, 100%. But how can we
be prepared when there’s nothing on this thing?
LORNE
And weaknesses? It’s not a sure bet El Destructo has any.
ANGEL
Everyone has an Achilles heel.
GUNN
Yeah, well until we find his, we’re gonna be cooling ours
’cause we got nothing without a new lead.
Angel suddenly looks past him to the front door, a surprised look on his
face and everyone follows his gaze. Gwen stands framed in the doorway,
wearing a short black half-shirt and a red leather pants. Cordelia eyes her
skeptically.
ANGEL
Gwen?
She steps down into the room.
GWEN
Hi, there. Long time no hand-to-hand. [to Gunn] I
remember you..ANGEL

Fred stands protectively in front of him.
FRED
The guy you killed? Yeah, that’s him.
GWEN
Kicked you in the face, too, didn’t I, cherry? Sorry about
that. I really do try to avoid contact. [looks at Angel] Mostly.
ANGEL
Cordelia, this is—
CORDELIA
I know who she is. [to Gwen] Caught your little show on
the omniscient higher-plane channel, thanks.
GWEN
So you’re the girl who makes his heart go pitter-pat.
Figuratively, at least. [to Angel] You must be so happy.
ANGEL
I am. Not having the best week, to be honest.
GWEN
Tell me about it. I mean, really. Tell me. Freak to freak. Is
the world about to end or what?
ANGEL
Something happen to you?
GWEN
Met with a client last night, in the oil fields, which is odd
because I’ve bagged for this guy six years, big money, and
he never wanted to meet before..ANGEL

CORDELIA
Fascinating as these details must seem to you, we’re
dealing with much more important stuff right now.
Apocalypse. End of the world.
GWEN
Also, while we were talking, he got his chest punched out
by a big demon with a head made of rock.
She suddenly has the rapt attention of Wesley, Lorne, Gunn and Angel.
GWEN
Demon, okay? The whole nine: cloven feet and horns and
teeth and… [sees Lorne] he wasn’t wearing lamé, though.
LORNE
Yeah, the evil ones can’t pull it off. It gets camp.
WESLEY
This client of yours, was anything removed from the
body?
GWEN
Didn’t see. [to Angel] But you are hands down the weirdest
person I know, so I figured I’d ask you what’s going on.
Fred picks up the ancient book on the Ra-tet and approaches Gwen.
FRED
Excuse me, not that I don’t still bear a grudge against you,
because I do, but your client didn’t happen to be a skinless
saber-toothed tiger or composed entirely of light, maybe?.ANGEL

GWEN
The light… it came out of his chest. How did you know?
GUNN
(to Wesley)
You wanted a pattern. That makes three.
FRED
He’s killing the Ra-tet.
GWEN
What’s a Ra-tet?
WESLEY
A mystical order. Each totem representing a stage in Ra’s
journey across the sky.
He points to the characters in the book.
WESLEY
Here’s your client. Two others— these— are dead.
CORDELIA
That means there’s two totems left: Manjet and Semkhet.
FRED
The last sighting of Manjet was rumored two years ago in
Belize and Semkhet is said to live in a cave in Death Valley.
ANGEL
Then that’s easy. All we have to do is find Semkhet and
protect him.
Lorne turns the page and finds a woodcut of a little girl standing with her
arms around a prehistoric great cat,.
LORNE
Yeah, well won’t that be hoot. Looks like Semkhet is
puddy-tat to the world’s scariest six-year-old.
CORDELIA
It could be dangerous.
ANGEL
(quick)
I’ll take Gwen.
GWEN
Gee, I feel all warm inside..ANGEL

CORDELIA
Well, shouldn’t we all go? It might—
He grabs his satchel and leads Gwen to the door.
ANGEL
We can handle it. Superpowers. I’ll catch her up on the
drive.
CORDELIA
But it’s a four-hour trip. Both ways.
ANGEL
I’m sure we’ll find something to talk about.
CUT TO:
7 EXT. DEATH VALLEY— NIGHT 7
Angel and Gwen climb down a steep cliff face toward the entrance of
Semkhet’s cave. Angel’s foot slips and Gwen shushes him.
GWEN
Jeez! Where were you when they taught stealth in
superpower school?
She starts to climb down after him and loses her balance, tumbling off the
side. Angel catches her in his arms and smiles ironically at her.
GWEN
I did that on purpose.
ANGEL
That’s pretty pathetic.
GWEN
If it’s a lie or if it’s the truth?
A stealthy sound comes from within the cave and they both cautiously
make their way inside.
CUT TO:
8 INT. DEATH VALLEY— SEMKHET’S CAVE— NIGHT 8
Candles line the walls as Angel enters and draws his sword..ANGEL

GWEN
I thought we were here to protect this thing?
ANGEL
We are… unless it’s evil. So if it is, we prevent the Beast
from killing it by killing it ourselves.
They round the corner and find Semkhet, a human-like cat, lying on the
cave floor, eviscerated.
GWEN
So much for protecting it.
ANGEL
Looks like it was ripped apart. Charring around the
edges… this was definitely our guy. The Beast is
systematically executing these totems. I just don’t know
why.
MANNY
(o.s.)
I do.
Angel and Gwen look up to find MANNY, a short dumpy man in a loud
Hawaiian shirt and a straw hat, peering around the corner.
MANNY
He’s going to turn out the sun.
FADE OUT
Act II
9 INT. DEATH VALLEY— SEMKHET’S CAVE— NIGHT 9
Resume. Angel looks Manny over warily as he approaches and looks
down at Semkhet.
ANGEL
Who are you? What are you doing here?
MANNY
Standing in the remains of my fallen brethren, trying not
to have an anxiety attack. Who are you two?
ANGEL
I’m Angel, that’s Gwen. You got a name?.ANGEL

MANNY
I am Manjet, Sacred Guardian of the Shen, Keeper of the
Orb of Ma’at and Devotee of Light. Off hours I like Manny.
ANGEL
(dubious)
You’re Manjet?
MANNY
Right.
ANGEL
The last totem of the Ra-tet?
MANNY
Right.
GWEN
I thought you were in Belize.
MANNY
Was till I heard Mesektet got whacked. Never liked that
chick. Evil right down to her Mary Janes but… family.
What are you gonna do?
ANGEL
What did you mean before? “The Beast is going to turn
out the sun.” Is that some kind of metaphor?
MANNY
Sorry. I don’t speak “college boy”. I said what I meant.
This Beast you’re talking about? He’s looking for a way to
put an end to daylight. He wants to blot out the sun
permanently.
ANGEL
You’re saying once the totems are dead, the sun
disappears?
MANNY
Not disappears, exactly. And it’s not just killing us, either.
There’s props and a ritual and a chant and a thing and a…
suffice to say, it ain’t easy. And folks in the Ra-tet, they got
some serious juice which is why I never felt worried
before.
ANGEL
But you’re worried now..ANGEL

MANNY
Well, four out of five down… let’s just say I’m not looking
forward to my retirement in Boca.
GWEN
So the lights go out. Then what?
MANNY
The city sinks into never-ending darkness, that’s what.
Vamps, creepies, crawlies, things that go bump in the night
are suddenly bumping 24/7. The whole of Los Angeles
turns into a…
ANGEL
Demon playground.
MANNY
Bingo. And that’s before it starts to spread. California…
North America… eventually, hello global blackout. The
world is the devil’s oyster.
ANGEL
Well, we gotta stop him.
MANNY
Yeah, you sure do and good luck with that.
He turns and heads for the cave entrance.
ANGEL
Whoa, whoa… where do you think you’re going?
MANNY
Look, it’s probably just a few hours till this guy catches up
with me. I want to spend my last moments with my oldest,
dearest friends down at the Pink Pony Lounge. [to Gwen]
I’ll buy you a lap dance if I can watch.
ANGEL
Forget that. We can take you somewhere safe, Manny. We
can protect you.
MANNY
Right. Superhunk and Spandexia. This thing takes out
Mesektet and you two are going to protect me?
ANGEL
I don’t see anybody else lined up for the job..ANGEL

Manny hesitates, then leans over to Angel, conspiratorially.
MANNY
You think she’d give me a lap dance?
CUT TO:
10 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— LOBBY— NIGHT 10
Angel, Manny and Gwen enter through the front door.
ANGEL
Any movement from the Beast while we were gone?
GUNN
Not a peep. Just wasting time trying to find ways to kill
it— which, by the way, there aren’t any.
Fred looks at Manny dubiously.
FRED
That doesn’t look like Semkhet…
MANNY
Semkhet’s not available, sweetheart. Slight case of being
ripped open to death in a cave. Don’t suppose I could
interest you in a short, stocky orb-keeper?
ANGEL
Guys, I’d like you to meet Manny, the last totem of the Ra-tet.
WESLEY
This… is a being of supreme power?.ANGEL

MANNY
You ought to see me in my Armani.
LORNE
What happened to the second-to-last one?
GWEN
Somebody already ripped out the toy surprise.
ANGEL
Good news is, we’ve discovered the Beast’s plan.
GUNN
Which is?
MANNY
To blot out the sun for all of eternity. [beat] You guys got a
john?
ANGEL
Right back there.
MANNY
Thanks, pal.
He heads off down the hall, stopping to pick up several newspapers off
the counter first.
CORDELIA
Why did the smelly yucky man say that? He’s joking,
right?
ANGEL
No, apparently there’s a ritual using members of the Ra-tet
to change day into night… forever.
WESLEY
As far as evil plans go, it doesn’t suck.
ANGEL
He’s killed four of the five so far. I figure we keep Manny
safe, the lights stay on long enough, and we find a way to
defeat this thing.
FRED
But where are we going to hide him? We need a small
controlled space..ANGEL

ANGEL
Secure the perimeter. Guards on duty at all times.
GUNN
Kitchen’s got a meat locker.
WESLEY
Brilliant. Let’s store the one thing that will stave off
perpetual darkness in the home of the only people we’re
sure the demon knows.
GUNN
You know what? You got a better idea, Einstein?
WESLEY
(beat)
Give me time.
Gwen steps forward.
GWEN
I know a place.
CORDELIA
Great. As long as it’s not some non-descript tenement
downtown, with discarded boxes in the stairwells and
peeling plaster and…
CUT TO:
11 INT. DOWNTOWN TENENMENT— NIGHT 11
Gwen leads them into a non-descript tenement downtown, with discarded
boxes lining the stairwell.
CORDELIA
…the faint odor of dead people.
ANGEL
You know, you didn’t have to come, Cordelia, if you didn’t
want to.
CORDELIA
(innocent)

annoying books with the symbolic manifestos and the
“Brilliant!”
MANNY
Never trust the books or the bookies, kid. Real juju takes
place on the q-t. That’s why you can’t find this Beast. He’s
too powerful. I mean, taking out the Ra-tet…
GUNN
Yeah, speaking of, ain’t you Tet folks supposed to be all
mighty and colossal?
MANNY
The midday totem is man, the neutral totem, the potential
of every human soul.
CORDELIA
So you’re just a guy, then?
MANNY
Well, there’s more to me than meets the eye. For example,
I’m immortal. Unless I’m ritually murdered, of course.
CORDELIA
Oh, well it’s too bad we came here, then.
Gwen stops before an iron door in a particularly seedy hallways and
places her bare hand on the lock. With a flash of blue electricity, the lock
releases and the door starts to swing open.
CORDELIA
…’cause if you’re going to be ritually murdered it’s
probably going to be in a hellhole like…
Gwen steps inside and flips on the lights to reveal a lavish and spacious
apartment.
CORDELIA
…this.
GWEN
Come on in.
Cordelia and the others enter and look around in wonder..ANGEL

GWEN
My butler’s already in Tahiti so we’re on our own here. I’ll
hit the kitchen for supplies later if I can… well… find the
kitchen.
She shuts the door and disappears down a long hallway.
ANGEL
(to Cordelia)
The Axis of Pythia— the thing I used to find you on the
higher plane— it’s worth $33 million. I gave it back to
Gwen when I was done.
Gwen returns and opens a set of double doors.
GWEN
(to Manny)
Let’s get you set up in the study.
They follow her into a spacious library with walls lined with bookshelves.
She crosses over to one of them and pulls a book out. It triggers a hidden
panel which slides back revealing a steel vault door.
GWEN
Can never pass up a good cliché.
She uses her power to activate the lock and the door slides back into the
wall revealing a small closet-like room.
GWEN
It’s equipped as a panic room, too. Twelve inches of solid
steel, it’s own ventilation system….ANGEL

Homey.
GWEN
You should be safe here.
MANNY
Don’t worry. I ain’t expecting any miracles.
GWEN
(to Angel)
So guard duty, what do you think? You and me, first shift?
CORDELIA
Wouldn’t it make more sense to split up? One superpower
per shift. That way if horn-boy shows up, we mere mortals
might stand a chance.
GUNN
Makes sense to me.
GWEN
Okay, then. I’ll take Denzel.
GUNN
Actually, it’s Gunn. Not that I mind the freakishly accurate
comparison but you will keep your hands to yourself.
ANGEL
Four hours on, four hours off. Bunk down off duty. Get as
much sleep as we can. We’re already tired. Got a long few
days ahead of us.
He turns and heads for the door. Cordelia shoots a dirty look at Gwen
and follows. Manny pokes his head out of the panic room with a smile.
MANNY
Hey, Gwen. Don’t suppose this joint’s got Skin-emax?
She just smiles and shuts the door, sealing him in.
CUT TO:
Later. Gunn sits in a chair while Gwen paces, telling him her life story.
GWEN
So then after the second gardener and the fourth nanny, I
got sent to the Academy..ANGEL

Gunn stares straight ahead, staring into the distance.
GWEN
Something tells me my origin story isn’t enough to
fascinate you.
GUNN
Oh, no. It is. I was just… just thinking.
GWEN
Gunn, I already apologized for killing you. What more do
you want? A wake?
GUNN
It isn’t that.
GWEN
Then it’s the English guy, isn’t it? [off his look] I saw the way
he looked at your girl. A good thief is a master of body
language.
GUNN
He starts talking with his body, he’s going to have serious
problem.
GWEN
I’m surprised. A few months ago she was ready to wear
sackcloth and ashes for you. When did the landscape
change?
GUNN
Long story.
The door opens and she looks up as Angel and Cordelia enter..ANGEL

How’s Manny?
GUNN
Fine. Gave him some magazines about a half hour ago to
keep him occupied.
GWEN
Swimsuit edition. He’s occupied. [to Gunn] Come on. I’ll
show you where you can crash.
Gwen and Gunn leave Cordelia and Angel alone. Cordelia sits down and
takes a sip of her coffee. Angel sits across from her, a tall glass of blood in
his hand.
CORDELIA
So… all this time alone together. Could be good for us.
Maybe we should talk.
ANGEL
Maybe we shouldn’t.
CORDELIA
Valid point.
The two of them sip their drinks in silence.
SMASH CUT TO:
Later. Angel starts awake to find Gwen shaking him.
ANGEL
Please… I’m awake!.ANGEL

What the hell are you doing falling asleep on watch?
ANGEL
I wasn’t—
CORDELIA
What’s happening?
Gunn kneels beside Cordelia who is groggily coming around as well.
ANGEL
—asleep. [off Gunn’s look] Manny!
He leaps up and runs over to the vault door. It slides open to reveal
Manny’s butchered body. Great swaths of blood and gore cover the walls.
ANGEL
It got him.
CORDELIA
Ugh. You think?

12 INT. GWEN’S APARTMENT— LIBRARY— NIGHT 12
Gwen paces while the others inspect the carnage..ANGEL

GWEN
Was that part of his powers? Extra blood and guts? I
mean, that’s… that’s a lot of blood and guts in there. No
way all that Stephen King came out of a normal guy.
ANGEL
It was the Beast. It was looking for something Manny had.
GUNN
How do you know?
Angel holds up Manny’s hat. The center has been punched out of it.
ANGEL
Emptied out his head to find it.
CORDELIA
Ugh.
GWEN
Wait. Manny said he was an orb-keeper, right? Maybe he
kept an orb.
CORDELIA
(sarcastic)
In his head?
GWEN
Where do you keep yours?
ANGEL
Hold on a second. She’s right.
CORDELIA
Of course.
ANGEL
(to Gwen)
Semkhet— the demon in the cave— you said someone
already pulled out the toy surprise.
GWEN
(coy)
Did I?
ANGEL
The Beast is pulling something out of these totems.
GUNN
And you knew that..ANGEL

ANGEL
Something you’re not telling me, Gwen?
Everyone stares at her, especially Cordelia.
GWEN
All right. My client— the Beast grabbed something out of
him, too. A little metal boxy thing.
CORDELIA
And you neglected to mention this fact.
GWEN
I don’t know, I thought the box might be worth
something. Look, the apocalypse was coming, there was a
giant killer demon. I panicked. And oh, by the way, I’m
still a thief and as a rule, we don’t share information.
GUNN
Okay, what about this cave demon? You think the big ugly
went treasure hunting inside of him?
ANGEL
It’s definitely possible.
CORDELIA
Yes! But what’s impossible is thinking that somehow, some
way, the Beast found where we were hiding, spiked the
drinks we made ourselves, snuck through this
unreasonably large apartment on the tippy-toes of his
cloven feet right up to the vault and killed poor Manny
unseen and unheard.
GUNN
Maybe whoever did it didn’t have cloven feet. [off their
looks] “The answer is among you.” I can’t be the only one
thinking it.
CORDELIA
Don’t be ridiculous. Connor doesn’t even know where we
are.
ANGEL
You didn’t call him?
CORDELIA
He doesn’t have a phone. I can’t believe you’d even
consider—.ANGEL

GUNN
Even if she didn’t call him, last time I checked, that boy
could track anybody anywhere.
ANGEL
But I’d know if he’d been here. I’d be able to smell him.
GUNN
Same way you smelled whatever it was spiking your
blood?
GWEN
This is impossible.
CORDELIA
Yeah, I thought we were pretty clear on the whole
impossible issue.
GWEN
Unseen and unheard… [realizes] Security cameras.
She walks out and into the next room. Angel and Cordelia follow.
GWEN
Got them in every room. We just gotta rewind the tapes.
ANGEL
(to Gunn)
Okay. In the meantime, call the hotel. Tell them about
Manny. Tell them about the toy surprises, too. Let’s see if
we can find out what they’re for and how we can stop the
Beast from using them.
GUNN
Angel, about Connor…
ANGEL
We’ll check it out later, like we do every other lead. Go.
He heads for the security room as Gunn takes out his cell phone and dials.

13 INT. GWEN’S APARTMENT— SECURITY ROOM— NIGHT 13
Gwen stares at a bank of monitors filled with static snow..ANGEL

CORDELIA
What’s that?
GWEN
That’s nothing. The tapes just go blank. It’s like the electrics
got cut. Let me check the systems log.
She pushes a button and a keyboard slides out. While she types, Cordelia
pulls Angel aside.
CORDELIA
You have to talk to him, Angel.
ANGEL
Who? Gunn? I just did.
CORDELIA
Connor, you dolt, and you knew who I meant so why
push my buttons?
ANGEL
Maybe ’cause it’s nice to make you crazy for a change.
CORDELIA
You can’t seriously think he did it… [looks at Gwen] when
there are other more liar-like suspects.
ANGEL
Well, so far he’s the only one who’s got a connection to the
Beast.
GWEN
I’ve got the origin of the blackout. It kicked off in a small
subset of the municipal A-14 grid. That’s the one under this
block. About 10 minutes before your watch.
CORDELIA
What does that mean?
GWEN
It means that somebody knew when you were going to
take over that watch and somebody knew whose drinks to
spike. You ask me, this is an inside job.
CORDELIA
Funny how you were inside at the time..ANGEL

Look, enough. Let’s just focus on the guy trying to blot out
the sun. We’ll point fingers later.
CUT TO:
14 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— LOBBY— DAY 14
Angel, Gwen, Cordelia and Gunn arrive back at the hotel.
GWEN
I’m just saying, it never would have happened on my
watch.
CORDELIA
Gosh, no! Because you’re supertramp.
Angel goes over to the counter where Lorne is researching.
ANGEL
What’s the latest?
LORNE
I checked out the ritual like you asked. Looks like there’s
some assembly required.
He opens a book and points to a diagram of a winged figure.
LORNE
Turns out these three pieces were inside the totems. Beast
kills the totems, yanks out the pieces and builds himself a
big old light switch..ANGEL

ANGEL
Well, what about the other two? What did he take out of
them?
LORNE
Well, I know he sucked the energy out of the little girl and
he ripped the heart out of the shaman but what’s not clear
is how he’s going to use them.
GWEN
These wings… they’re metal, right? Get me close enough
and I can melt them. That’ll slow him down.
CORDELIA
If we find him in time. Need I remind everyone that he’s
already got all the pieces plus we don’t even know where
he’s going to perform this ritual.
GUNN
Sun or no sun, I’m not worried about slowing him down.
I’m worried about taking him out.
Wesley and Fred enter.
WESLEY
We may have a solution for that.
FRED
We’ve done a lot of research and we think we found a way
to get rid of the Beast. A portal.
Gunn shakes his head..ANGEL

Figures.
WESLEY
We’ve tried conventional methods: firearms, the usual
weaponry. None of which seem to work.
ANGEL
But if we stand against it long enough to find a way to
corner it, maneuver it into position…
LORNE
Then maybe we can send this thing back to the hell-sweet-hell
it came from.
Gunn stalks over to the weapons cabinet and puts away his things,
obviously upset. Fred goes over and tries to calm him down.
FRED
I know what you must be thinking.
GUNN
That we should have learned our lesson?
FRED
Wesley and I have decided this is our only option.
GUNN
I know. But I don’t got to like it.
He walks over and joins the others.
ANGEL
Okay, so we’ve got everything we need to stop the ritual.
Let’s clear out of here and try and locate the Beast.
As he starts packing up the books, Cordelia’s eyes go wide and she gasps
as she received a vision of a medieval battlefield strewn with bloody and
broken corpses. The Beast stands above it all, watching the dead and
dying.
CORDELIA
Oh, my god…
ANGEL
Another vision?.ANGEL

CORDELIA
Same one. Only there was more of it. A massacre. So many
people on the ground… dead, dying… the screaming was
so loud.
ANGEL
Could you hear the demon?
CORDELIA
No. But whoever it was talking to, they felt familiar. Like
someone I know.
ANGEL
Connor.
CORDELIA
I think it’s time we bring him into this, Angel. If nothing
else, he’s our best chance at finding the Beast.
CUT TO:
15 INT. CONNOR’S APARTMENT— DAY 15
Connor lies on his bed reading a magazine. A knock at the door and he
gets up to answer it. He opens the door to find the Beast waiting for him.
BEAST
Hello, Connor.
Connor stares up at it in horror.

Act IV
16 INT. CONNOR’S APARTMENT— DAY 16
Resume. Connor turns and flees into the room as the Beast ducks low and
moves through the doorway after him. Connor pushes off the wall and
flips around, sending a flying kick at the Beast’s head. The creature barely
notices the blow. He charges it again and the Beast catches him in mid-air
and throws him to the ground. It seizes Connor by the leg and slams him
to the floor, then picks him up and hurls him through the window.
CUT TO:
17 EXT. INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT— DAY 17
Angel’s car pulls up just as Connor flies out the window and falls five
stories to land in a bloody and battered heap on the pavement in front of
them.
Cordelia, Gunn, Gwen, Angel, Wesley and Fred emerge from the car.
Angel, covered in a blanket, tries to run to Connor but Gunn intercepts
him and pushes him out of the sunlight.
CORDELIA
Oh, my god… Connor.
She kneels next to him and turns him over.
ANGEL
What happened?
CONNOR
(gasps)
The Beast… it’s upstairs..ANGEL

WESLEY
Maybe it needs to do the ritual—
GUNN
—in the place where Connor lives.
ANGEL
We’ll figure that out later. Everybody gear up. Wes, you
got everything you need?
WESLEY
Ready.
Gunn goes to the car’s trunk and takes out axes, swords and other
weapons. He hands some to Angel.
ANGEL
Gwen, go for the orb, the wings, whatever you can get
your hands on. We can’t let him finish the spell. Gunn, you
and I will keep the Beast busy long enough for Fred and
Wesley to work the portal mojo. Cordy… keep him safe.
CONNOR
Dad…
ANGEL
It’s okay, Connor. I’m here now. [to others] Let’s go.
CUT TO:
18 INT. CONNOR’S APARTMENT— DAY 18
The Beast holds up the combined totems— two metallic gold wings
topped with a glass orb— and blows a murky black energy cloud from its
mouth into the orb..ANGEL

The orb turns dark and the Beast sets it down in the center of a runic
diagram on the floor, then starts chanting.
BEAST
Ket sahv Ma’at.
Ket sahv Mesektet.
It holds a human heart up and directly over the orb and squeezes the
blood out so that drops onto the obsidian orb.
BEAST
Ket sahv Ma’at.
Ket sahv Mesektet.
The orb briefly glows a fiery red, then fades back to black.
The door slams open and the group charges in, Angel in the lead.
FRED
He’s already started.
CUT TO:
19 EXT. INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT— DAY 19
Connor leans against the car, holding his ribs.
CONNOR
I should be up there. I can fight it.
CORDELIA
Don’t worry, Connor. I’m sure they’re doing okay.
He looks up at the shattered window far above.
CUT TO:
20 INT. CONNOR’S APARTMENT— DAY 20
Gunn crashes to floor in a heap as Angel attacks the Beast. Fred and
Wesley stand off to the side chanting while Gwen tries to get at the idol.
She spots an opening and dashes across the room toward it.
The Beast tosses Angel aside and turns back to Gunn when it spots Gwen
behind it. It picks up a wooden crate and hurls it at her. It strikes her full
force and shatters. She drops to the floor, dazed..ANGEL

The idol breaks into its three component pieces and the orb rolls across
the floor.
ANGEL
The orb! Don’t let it…
The glass orb comes to rest right between the Beast’s feet. It looks down
at Angel with a predatory smile.
CUT TO:
21 EXT. INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT— DAY 21
Cordelia looks up at the building, worried, then gasps as more of the
vision hits her. She flashes to the battlefield where the Beast is smiling at
someone.
BEAST
You are a worthy adversary.
She finally realizes who it’s talking to.
CORDELIA
Oh, no…
CUT TO:
22 INT. CONNOR’S APARTMENT— DAY 22
The Beast kneels in the center of the runic diagram.
BEAST

A shimmering energy filed starts to form around the Beast.
WESLEY
Angel…

Yeah, I got it. Everybody get ready.

CONNOR
What’s it like when you pass out?
Cordelia is distracted by her vision.
CORDELIA
What?
CONNOR
Things get dimmer, right?
CORDELIA
I guess. What—
She breaks off when she realizes things really are getting dimmer. She
looks up at the sun just as cloudy jet-black tendrils crawl across the
glowing disk, blocking the light and turning the day into dusk, then night.

24 INT. CONNOR’S APARTMENT— DAY 24
Angel watches the energy portal form around the Beast, then makes his
move.
BEAST
Ket Mesektet.
ANGEL
Now or never.
He raises his sword and attacks along with Gwen and Gunn. Between the
three of them, they force it backward toward the portal. With a final
leaping kick, Angel knocks it into the energy field and it disappears.
GWEN
(smiles)
We did it. Didn’t we?
CUT TO:
25 EXT. INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT— DAY 25
Outside, the sky gets even darker as Cordelia’s vision comes back again.
This time she sees it all.
BEAST
But our strength is useless divided.
CUT TO:
26 INT. CONNOR’S APARTMENT— DAY 26
The group approaches the windows and look outside with apprehension..ANGEL

They all spin around to find the Beast behind them, striding into the room.
They back away from it in shock.

Join with me…
Reveal Angel standing before the Beast, bruised and bloody.

As Angel stares at it in stunned silence, the Beast bends down and picks up
the orb from the center of the ritual circle. It puts the orb in its mouth and
swallows, then turns to Angel.
BEAST
We’ll meet again… soon.
Then it leaps out the window and is gone.
WESLEY
My god… the sun. It’s gone. Completely obliterated.
CUT TO:
31 EXT. INDUSTRIAL DISTRICT— DAY 31
The group comes out of the building and Cordelia runs over to them.
CORDELIA
Angel, we have to talk.
FRED
I can’t believe we lost the sun.
CORDELIA
Angel, I think I figured it out..ANGEL

So have I. The Beast knows me.
CORDELIA
No, it doesn’t. It knows Angelus.
At the mention of that name, Angel looks around uncomfortably as
everyone stares at him.
CORDELIA
Am I right? While you were upstairs, it came to me. I
wasn’t having a vision of the demon. I was having a
memory of it.
GWEN
How’s that again?
CORDELIA
(ignores her)
I told you, when I was a higher being, I’d experienced
everything you’d ever done as Angelus. But since I’ve
been back, my memory’s been fading until the Powers
decided to… jog it, I guess. Angel, I saw you, long ago,
standing in a field of bodies with the Beast.
CONNOR
You knew this thing and you didn’t tell us?
ANGEL
No! I couldn’t come up against something like that and not
remember.
GUNN
“The answer is among you.” That’s what the little girl
meant, isn’t it? This was never about Connor. It’s about…
FRED
…Angelus.
ANGEL
I’m telling you, I don’t know this Beast. I’d remember.
CORDELIA
Like you remember falling asleep before Manny got
killed?
ANGEL
What?.ANGEL

An inside job.
ANGEL
What’s that supposed to mean?
WESLEY
It means you’re a suspect. If Cordelia’s right, we should
admit the possibility that this Beast may have some sort of
power over you. To make you do things. To make you
forget.
CORDELIA
And it has a plan. The rain of fire, taking down Wolfram &
Hart, even blotting out the sun… I think now those were
only the first steps to something bigger.
ANGEL
Well, I don’t know what to tell any of you because I don’t
know what the plan is!
WESLEY
No… but Angelus might. There’s only one way we’re
going to defeat this Beast. We need Angelus.
FADE TO BLACK
