Prologue
1 INT. MONASTERY— NIGHT 1
WO PANG sits cross-legged on the floor before a circle of votive candles.
As before, the sounds of fighting come from outside.
A moment later, wo pang’s guard flies through the beaded curtain and
lands unconscious on the floor in front of him. WESLEY, CONNOR and
CORDELIA step through after him, a grim expressions on their faces.
WO PANG
Must acquire better guards.
WESLEY
Angel’s soul has been stolen.
WO PANG
I have no need for the vampire’s soul.
CONNOR
Then where is it?
Wo Pang casts a handful of bones into the circle in front of him and reads
the message contain within their pattern.
WO PANG
That I cannot discern but it is still viable within the muo-ping.
CONNOR
Muo-what?.ANGEL

WESLEY
It’s still safe in the container.
CORDELIA
Angel’s soul has been misplaced. I bet that sort of thing
happens all the time. What do you have as a back-up plan
to re-ensoul somebody?
WO PANG
There is no other way known to me. Without the muo-ping…
you’re screwed.
CONNOR
And what happens if the muo… container-thing breaks or
gets opened?
WO PANG
Then like all things, the soul can be returned or destroyed.
A sharp wind blows through the ceremonial chamber, extinguishing the
candles around them.
CUT TO:
2 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— LOBBY— NIGHT 2
ANGELUS calls out from his cell in the basement over the video monitor
on the lobby counter while FRED researches and GUNN puts the finishing
touches on a homemade flamethrower..ANGEL

(over cam)
Awfully quiet up there. I’ve had time to think and I’ve
realized something important. Being evil is wrong. I want
to be good. I want to be Angel again. You hear me? I’m
ready.
GUNN
I’m ready, too, fangboy.
Gunn shoots a gout of flame across the lobby, unnerving Fred.
FRED
He knows, doesn’t he? That his soul is missing.
GUNN
Probably knew before we did.
FRED
I hope that shaman can help us.
GUNN
That shaman should have never been brought here. Now
instead of just worrying about the big bad rock-eater, we
got Darth Vampire living in the basement.
FRED
Bringing Angelus was our best chance.
GUNN
That you talking or Wes?
FRED
You were pushing for it, too, Charles.
GUNN
Then maybe I did the wrong thing.
ANGELUS
(on cam)
Like smacking your girl around? I bet you Wes would
never hit her. He’s all proper and English. And that
accent— oh, chicks just love a good accent. Makes ’em all
buttery in their nether regions. Isn’t that right, Fred?
Gunn stares at Fred but she says nothing..ANGEL

You know, I had a bit of an Irish brogue back in the day. If
you like, I can use it on you when I rape you to death.

Gunn yanks out the power cable.
GUNN
Son a bitch.
FRED
He’s just… it’s just words.
GUNN
Yeah.
FRED
And that’s the only way he can hurt us. He knows he’s
never getting out.

3 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— BASEMENT— NIGHT 3
A grate in the rear of the room slides open. Angelus turns around and
smiles as LILAH steps out of the shadows with a crowbar in her hand.
Opening credit sequence.
Act I
4 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— BASEMENT— NIGHT 4
Resume. Lilah approaches the cage with a limp, favoring her wounded
abdomen. She’s filthy, her clothes ripped and torn.
LILAH
The great Angelus…
ANGELUS
Oh, come on. You can do better than that, huh? Try
playing up the awe and the reverence a bit. (dramatic) The
great Angelus.
LILAH
Great… being locked in a cage..ANGEL

Yet managing to display better grooming habits than you.
Look at yourself, Lilah. All these years wanting to meet
me… you couldn’t run a comb through your hair, maybe
slap on a little lipstick? Evil doesn’t have to mean sloppy.
LILAH
Stop it.
ANGELUS
Oh, feeling touchy, are we?
LILAH
The Beast. I want you to stop it.
ANGELUS
Oh. Not sure I really want to. Don’t get me wrong— I’m
not a big fan of the horn job. Although he did bring on
permanent midnight. Gotta give him props for that.
LILAH
Can you do it or not?
ANGELUS
Hmm… why is your thong in such a bunch, counselor?
You’re a professional.
LILAH
(laughs)
Workin’ the sewers. Beast took everything. Killed ’em all.
ANGELUS
Saw the damage. He does have a flair for it..ANGEL

LILAH
Not just at the office. Everybody. Field ops, liaisons, people
out sick that day… but not me. Not yet.
Angelus watches Lilah’s feet inch closer to the safe line on the floor.
LILAH
Why is he picking on us? We’re the bad guys!
ANGELUS
Apparently not bad enough. But there is a bright side. You
have a devoted boyfriend who loves and cares for— oh,
wait. You don’t. (laughs) Your life really is crap.
LILAH
And yet I’m not the monkey in the box. I want that thing
destroyed. You’re the only one who can do it.
ANGELUS
Maybe… we can work something out.
CUT TO:
5 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— LOBBY— NIGHT 5
GUNN
What Angelus said about me… I didn’t mean to hurt you. I
would never do that.
FRED
I know. I just can’t help but think if you didn’t attack
Wes—
GUNN
Attack? That’s how you see it? I attacked him? What do
you call what he was doing in the office before I walked
in?
FRED
I don’t know what—
GUNN
He was kissing you! Don’t lie to me. It’s the one thing
you’re not good at.
FRED
It just happened..ANGEL

GUNN
Because you let it. (beat) I’ve never felt so much for
anyone. I would do anything for you but it’s not enough,
is it?
FRED
Charles, I—
GUNN
I can’t do this anymore, Fred. I’m tired of you looking
everywhere but at me.
Fred looks up as the front door opens and Wesley enters, followed by
Cordelia and Connor.
GUNN
Like that.
He walks off as Wesley approaches and sees she’s upset.
WESLEY
What is it?
Fred shakes her head and covers.
FRED
I just… can’t make heads or tails of this banishing text. You
guys have any luck?
CONNOR
Yeah, but it was all bad. Shaman didn’t have the soul.
Doesn’t know who took it. Doesn’t know how to find it.
CORDELIA
Other than that, everything’s peachy. Any word from
Lorne and his contacts?
Fred shakes her head.
GUNN
Damn it!
They all turn as Gunn runs for the basement door. On the monitor, Lilah
approaches Angelus’ cage with the crowbar. They all follow Gunn down
the stairs.

6 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— BASEMENT— NIGHT 6
Lilah turns as Gunn and the others dash down the stairs toward her. As
Angelus reaches out through the bars to grab her, Gunn fires a trank dart
into him.
Lilah drops her crowbar and runs across the room, ducking back into the
sewers. Gunn keeps the rifle trained on Angelus.
GUNN
(to others)
Lilah. Ran off into the sewers.
Wesley and Connor head after her as Angelus collapses to the floor.
GUNN
Connor, wait. You should stay here and make sure it isn’t
a setup. There might be others.
Connor nods and starts searching the dark corners of the basement.

7 INT. LOS ANGELES STORM SEWERS— NIGHT 7
Lilah runs through the tunnels, holding her wounded belly with Wesley in
pursuit. She comes the end of the tunnel and climbs up a ladder, Wesley
right at her heels.

Gunn keeps the rifle trained on Angelus’ still form and motions to
Connor.
GUNN
Check the locks.
Connor shakes the door to the cage. It’s solid. He kicks the crowbar away
from the cage and across the room. Gunn finally lowers the rifle.
GUNN
What kind of brain fart made that witch try and let
Angelus out?
CORDELIA
I want to know how she even knew he was here.
CONNOR
Maybe she took Angel’s soul.
GUNN
She’s a mucky-muck at Wolfram & Hart. It’s her job to
know.
FRED
I thought the Beast killed everyone at Wolfram & Hart.
GUNN
Maybe she cut some kind of deal with it.
CONNOR
You really think she has a connection to the Beast?
CUT TO:
9 INT. LOS ANGELES STORM SEWERS— NIGHT 9
Wesley throws himself against a door, cracking it open. He enters an
antechamber and Lilah leaps out of the shadows, swinging an iron pipe.
But her wound makes her sluggish and Wesley easily dodges the blow
and disarms her.
LILAH
You’re a son of a bitch, you know that?
She walks over to a stool and sits down..ANGEL

WESLEY
When I said go underground, I didn’t think you’d—
He notices her abdomen is still bleeding, soaking through her shirt.
WESLEY
Is that where the Beast…
LILAH
Can’t make it stop.
WESLEY
I could take a look at it.
LILAH
No, I’m fine.
WESLEY
How did you know we had Angelus?
LILAH
Big magick, taking a champion’s soul. Makes ripples. I still
know some people who like ripples. It was your idea,
wasn’t it, to bring him? (he looks away) Great minds…
WESLEY
…aren’t foolish enough to release him.
LILAH
I wasn’t.
WESLEY
So the crowbar…?
LILAH
I had to make him believe I was desperate.
WESLEY
Not much of a stretch, really, is it? (beat) And you always
wanted Angelus.
LILAH
No. Wolfram & Hart did but it doesn’t matter anymore. I
just… I just want my life back. All my pretty things… I’m
selfish that way. That’s why we wouldn’t have worked
out..ANGEL

WESLEY
There are many reasons we wouldn’t have worked out,
Lilah.
They stare at each other for a beat and Wesley finally looks away. He
spots a book lying on a dirty cot in the corner and picks it up, curious.
WESLEY
Rhinehardt’s Compendium?
LILAH
I need to find a way to make it pay.
He flips through the book.
WESLEY
I’ve already checked. There’s nothing in here that even
remotely describes… him.
He stops on a page with a prominent drawing of the Beast. Puzzled, he
flips quickly through the book again.
WESLEY
It’s identical to my copy except for this passage. How’s that
possible?
LILAH
It’s not a local copy. Pulled some favors, got it on the pan-dimensional
black market.
WESLEY
But still… it should be the exact same text. (considers)
Unless….ANGEL

Unless what?
WESLEY
Well, we’d have to check more books from other
dimensions but what if there were other references to the
Beast at one time that had somehow been removed? But
what would something that powerful need to hide?
CUT TO:
10 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— BASEMENT— NIGHT 10
Angelus lies unconscious in the cage while Gunn paces the basement.
GUNN
Lilah or not, someone is doing the Beast’s dirty work.
CORDELIA
That would explain how giant lava-boy could tiptoe past us
to take out Manny.
CONNOR
And butcher that family, those priestesses.
FRED
Even though Lilah’s evil, I don’t see her hacking up all
those people.
GUNN
Okay, maybe it’s not just her. Maybe the big bad Beast has
minions doing his dirty work.
ANGELUS
Morons. The big rock doesn’t have minions. It is the
minion.
Angelus sits up, still a bit groggy from the drug.
FRED
No, it’s not. We’ve seen what it can do.
ANGELUS
You’ve just seen the warm-up act.
CORDELIA
What are you saying?.ANGEL

I’m saying, there’s something bigger. Something worse.
He looks up at Cordelia.
ANGELUS
The Beast… has a boss.
FADE OUT
Act II
11 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— BASEMENT— NIGHT 11
Resume. Angelus gets to his feet and faces the confused looks from those
outside the cage.
GUNN
Worse than the Beast?
CORDELIA
That’s… that’s not possible.
ANGELUS
How did you survive this long being so retarded?
GUNN
Cut the Fu-Manchu. What do you know?
ANGELUS
Quite a bit, bright boy. Maybe I’ll fill in the blanks
sometime.
CONNOR
How do you know there’s something worse than the
Beast?
ANGELUS
’Cause I’ve got a brain, son. The Beast I knew was big on
the smash and slaughter. Had the brawn to be really good
at it, too. But the big picture? Not his strong point. But
whoa… flash forward. Now he’s all rain of fire, destroying
the Ra-tet, blotting out the sun… big moves for a guy
whose head’s made out of rock.
CORDELIA
Maybe he got smarter..ANGEL

And maybe I’ll sprout some wings and flutter away.
There’s something else out there. More powerful, more
vicious… pulling all the strings. (shudders) I don’t know
about you but I’m just dying to find out what it is.
CUT TO:
12 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— LOBBY— NIGHT 12
The front door opens and Lilah enters to the frosty stares of everyone
else.
Wesley comes in behind her and closes the door.
LILAH
What? No cake?
FRED
Where is it?
LILAH
Where’s what?
CORDELIA
Angel’s soul.
LILAH
Oh, that what.
WESLEY
She didn’t take it..ANGEL

How do you know?
WESLEY
Because she told me.
GUNN
You believe her? Lying’s her job.
LILAH
He’s got a point. (holds open her coat) You want to search
me?
Cordelia eyes her bleeding belly.
CORDELIA
What happened?
WESLEY
She was injured in the attack on Wolfram & Hart.
GUNN
The place was a slaughterhouse. How’d she make it out?
LILAH
Got lucky.
CORDELIA
Well, maybe it was more than that. What were you doing
downstairs with Angelus?
WESLEY
She was gathering intel.
GUNN
With a crowbar? She’s the only one to make it out of
Wolfram & Hart alive, then she shows up right after
Angel’s soul goes missing.
WESLEY
I’ve already told you she had nothing to do with that.
CONNOR
Maybe she knows who did.
FRED
Or who’s controlling the Beast..ANGEL

(confused)
Controlling?
GUNN
Angelus thinks rock-boy’s just the muscle. Not that I trust
him any more than you.
CORDELIA
Everything that’s happened, it’s part of a bigger plan with
something even worse than the Beast sketching the
blueprints.
WESLEY
That’s what he’s been trying to hide. (to Lilah) There might
be something in the text we—
CORDELIA
(sharp)
Text?
WESLEY
Lilah found a passage in Rhinehardt’s Compendium.
FRED
But we searched that already. There’s nothing in there.
WESLEY
Because all references to the Beast have been erased in this
dimension.
LILAH
I got my copy of Rhinehardt’s way out of town. (to Fred)
I’m surprised you didn’t think of that.
GUNN
That’s why Angel didn’t remember the Beast.
WESLEY
His memory’s been wiped clean just like the books.
CONNOR
Why does Angelus remember?
FRED
Because his mind wasn’t here when the spell or whatever
was cast, right?.ANGEL

We should compare this passage with the information
Wolfram & Hart extracted from Lorne. There might be—
GUNN
Yeah, have fun with that.
FRED
Charles…
GUNN
Somebody needs to be downstairs, make sure nobody else
tries to “intel” our boy.
He picks up his flamethrower and gas can and heads for the basement.
Lilah notes the tension between Gunn and Fred and a small smile tugs at
the corner of her mouth. Fred heads after Gunn but Cordelia stops her.
CORDELIA
Let him go. I know this is hard. I know we’re all tired and
hurting but we have to stay focused. We need to figure out
what’s coming and how to get Angel back before it does
because if this is as bad as I think it is, we’ll need him more
than ever.
CUT TO:
13 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— BASEMENT— NIGHT 13
Gunn sits watch over Angelus with his flamethrower slung across his lap.
ANGELUS
You know what I like about you? You play to your
strengths. You know what they are and you stick to them.
You don’t find that much these days. Everybody always
trying to expand their horizons, actuate their potential and
all that other touchy-feely crap. But not you. You don’t try
to change… because you know your place. That’ll go a
long way toward keeping you alive. Well, a lot longer than
the others. (laughs) Man, you guys really are on a streak.
You let L.A. nearly burn to the ground… lost the sun… let
the creepy-crawlies practically take over the city. But, you
know, that’s okay. At least you got the love of a good
woman… till she dumps you for a guy with a bigger
horizon.
GUNN
It’s her life..ANGEL

Oh, wait. Did I miss it? Did she already let you down easy?
Cheer up, buddy. Not like we didn’t see it coming.
Especially after what happened to her old professor. (off his
look) Come on. Even Angel’s not that stupid. The way
things changed between you two, the furtive looks, all that
guilt. Mmm… there’s nothing like your first murder. Don’t
worry. I won’t tell what our little girl did.
GUNN
She didn’t—
ANGELUS
Yeah! So it was you. Steppin’ up and bein’ the man.
GUNN
I did what I had to do.
ANGELUS
I guess Fred didn’t quite see it that way, huh? Wow. You
do a chick a favor, you think she’d be grateful. But no. She
still goes for the broody smart guy, all mysterious and
tortured. I guess when you think about it, for the first time
in your life, you just weren’t dark enough.
Gunn’s hand tightens on the trigger of the flamethrower and he sends a
blast of flaming gasoline into the cage. Angelus backpedals, avoiding
being incinerated by mere inches.
ANGELUS
(laughs)
Maybe there’s hope for you, after all, Chuck.
CUT TO:.ANGEL

14 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— OFFICE— NIGHT 14
Fred and Wesley review their research.
FRED
This is hopeless. The Orb of Thesulah is the only way I can
find to restore Angel’s soul but that only works if it’s
moved on to an afterlife or something, not floating in a jar
somewhere.
WESLEY
We’ll find a way to bring Angel back.
FRED
How?
WESLEY
The way we always do. Skill, perseverance… luck.
FRED
(smiles)
Not a lot of that going around.
WESLEY
We’ll be all right.
FRED
(pointed)
As long as we stick together.
WESLEY
Fred, what happened between me and Gunn… I didn’t
mean… that’s not what I wanted. Could you tell him that?.ANGEL

FRED
I don’t think he’ll listen. We’re not… we’re not together
anymore.
Wesley is taken aback by the news.
WESLEY
Oh. Not because of what I did?
FRED
Things just haven’t been right. Not for a while.
Wesley moves toward her.
WESLEY
I think this is part where I’m supposed to say I’m sorry.
And I’m really trying to be but…
He leans in as if to kiss her but Lilah and Cordelia enter, interrupting. Fred
turns away, back to the books.
LILAH
Any progress?
FRED
Not really.
LILAH
Pity.
WESLEY
I made some headway cross-referencing but there’s no
telling how long it’ll take to get anything definitive.
CORDELIA
But you have made some progress?
LILAH
(smiles)
Sure looks like he’s trying.
She glances at Fred who looks away, embarrassed.
WESLEY
I’ll relieve Gunn, see if I can get anything else out of
Angelus..ANGEL

So what now? Ouija board?
The front door opens and Fred’s eyes light up as LORNE enters.
FRED
Lorne! Did you find out anything?
LORNE
Zip. Zilch. (sees Lilah) And what in the hell is succu-bitch
doing here?
CORDELIA
Still trying to figure that out. So… nothing?
LORNE
Talked to every contact that hasn’t beat it for higher
ground. Nobody’s heard bo-peep about Angel’s soul.
LILAH
Forget about the goody-goody. You want to kill the Beast
and give his boss a run for his evil? The answer’s
downstairs in a cage. Sic Angelus on him.
CORDELIA
Do you know what Angelus would do if we let him out?
LILAH
Kill you all in a bloody shower of violence… but, hey,
greater good.
CORDELIA
We’ll find another way. I’m sure if we just all—.ANGEL

LILAH
What? Hold hands and sing a hymn? That might be a little
hard when the Beast is ripping your guts out.
Lilah heads for the stairs with a pronounced limp.
CORDELIA
Lilah, I know things look grim right now…
LILAH
Don’t go Watchtower on me, Saint Cordelia. I don’t think I
could stomach it.
CORDELIA
Man, I’d love to punch your face in.
Lilah stops and turns with a smile.
LILAH
Are you trying to turn me on?
CORDELIA
You know what’s sad about people like you, Lilah? It all
comes down to fear.
LILAH
Fascinating. Now that we’ve got that settled…
She turns back to the stairs.
CORDELIA
You’re too scared to believe in anything because you’re
too scared to hope. You won’t even open your eyes to the
possibility.
LILAH
(laughs)
You don’t get it, do you, twinkie? I’m what I believe in.
And you think I got this far by sticking my head in the
sand? The Beast that eviscerated me has a boss and that
boss is going to end life as we know it and nobody is
coming to save us! Not Angel, not the Powers That Be and
not the Forty-damned-second Cavalry! So if anybody has
scales on their eyes…
Cordelia’s head rocks back and when she looks at Lilah again, here eyes
have gone a milky, opaque white..ANGEL

…it’s you.
CORDELIA
I can bring him back. I know how to re-ensoul Angel.
FADE OUT
Act III
15 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— BASEMENT— NIGHT 15
Wesley stands guard over Angelus with a crossbow. They both look up as
Fred descends the stairs.
ANGELUS
Hey, we were just talking about you. At least I was,
anyway.
WESLEY
What is it?
FRED
Cordelia had a vision. She knows how to put his soul back.
ANGELUS
(laughs)
I guess the Powers saw how bad you guys suck.
FRED
Doing better than you..ANGEL

WESLEY
Fred…
ANGELUS
Oh! She really has put on the spunk, hasn’t she, Wes? Not
the same shy bitch-cow we pulled out of Pylea.
FRED
There’s only one bitch here and I’m looking at him.
ANGELUS
Oh, come on. We all know it’s for the best. Now you can
go for the real prize. Mmm… man, I’m telling you, if I
swung that way… look at him. All rugged and handsome.
And brains! Man, he’s damn near perfect.
WESLEY
Thank you.
He and Fred turn to go.
ANGELUS
Except the part about banging Lilah for the past six
months. That kinda takes the shine off.
Fred stops and stares at Angelus, incredulous, then notices Wesley’s
expression.
WESLEY
Fred…
FRED
No, it’s… it’s none of my business. I should…
She turns and runs up the stairs, Angelus chuckling in the background.
CUT TO:
16 EXT. GRIFFITH PARK— FOREST— NIGHT 16
Gunn and Connor dig a large hole in the woods.
CONNOR
Are you sure this is the right spot?
GUNN
Well, the landmarks look like what Cordy described in her
vision..ANGEL

CONNOR
I never fought a soul-eater before.
GUNN
And I’m not planning to. Cordy said this thing was buried
by the Chumash a couple of hundred years ago. Don’t
expect it to put up too much of a fight.
CONNOR
So what if we can’t find it?
GUNN
Then we’re screwed. The skull of the soul-eater’s the main
piece of the spell Cordy saw. Without that—
His shovel strikes something solid and he looks up at Connor.
GUNN
Clear it off.
They brush the dirt aside to find a wooden box buried beneath.
GUNN
Whoa, thank you, Powers That Be. About damn time.
He picks up a crowbar and starts prying the lid off.
CONNOR
You want me to do that?
GUNN
I got it.
Suddenly a clawed hand shoots up through the wooden cover and seizes
Gunn by the throat. Connor raises his shovel and severs the arm at the
elbow. Gunn stumbles backward, gasping.
CONNOR
You okay?
GUNN
I so don’t need that kind of crap. Let’s just chop his head
off and—
He looks down to find the box is now empty.
GUNN
Okay, this thing is really starting to piss me off..ANGEL

He whips around just as the soul-eater attacks from behind. He throws
several punches, none of which connect. The creature moves so fast, it’s a
blur, dodging and weaving, then striking, sending Gunn reeling to the
ground. Connor swings his sword but it’s too fast for him, too. He ends
up on the ground on his back while the soul-eater melts back into the
shadows.
They look around as the creature circles them with blurring speed. It
attacks again, backhanding Gunn. Connor tries to strike it with his sword
but never lands a blow. The creature bats the weapon aside and seizes
Connor, forcing him to his knees. A yellow glow emanates from
Connor’s chest as the creature starts to drain his soul.
Gunn stands up, sword in hand and severs the creature’s arm, breaking its
hold on Connor, then whips the sword around and decapitates it. Connor
lies on his back, gasping in shock.
The eyes in the soul-eater’s disembodied head snap open and its body
starts writhing on the ground. Gunn raises the sword and brings it down
over and over, chopping repeatedly. Finally, it lies still.
CONNOR
(gasps)
Nice.
GUNN
Yeah, sometimes you just gotta keep whackin’.
CONNOR
You think it’ll work?
Gunn holds up the severed head..ANGEL

GUNN
It better. If there’s really something worse than the Beast,

strangely formed conglomerations of wood, bone and feathers.

Connor and Gunn share a chuckle.
WESLEY

She shuts her eyes and concentrates.

Right. (to Connor) Take it to the kitchen and remove the
flesh and soft tissue.
Connor and Gunn exchange a glance, then he picks up the severed head
with a sigh and they both head for the door as Lilah comes down the
stairs.

Fred comes out from the back, looking for Wesley. She stops when she

Wesley sets the skull down in the center of a ritual circle on the floor in
front of Angelus’ cage. Connor kneels to Wesley’s right while Fred lays
down sticks in a runic pattern across from him. Cordelia, Gunn, Lorne and
Lilah stand nearby watching.
ANGELUS
Have you all lost your minds? You’re going to use black
magick to restore my soul. People, this never goes well.
Am I the only one paying attention?
LILAH
Ten-to-one, the entire hotel gets sucked into a hell
dimension.
GUNN
You two, with the shuttin’ up.
ANGELUS
Talk about eleventh hour desperation. Face it, you’re
grasping. No jar, no soul.
CONNOR
You sound pretty desperate yourself.
CORDELIA
(to Wesley)

Cordelia holds the vial over the center of the circle and pours blood onto
the skull.

You shut your fat mouth.
Lilah rolls her eyes and Angelus chuckles.
ANGELUS
Look at you. Heroes. So tangled up in your own crap, you

Everyone holds up the bundles of bones and feathers. Cordelia goes over
to the cage and stands before Angelus.
ANGELUS
Hell, even Angel knew you never stood a chance. You
want to know why he really let me out? Because he finally
gave up. He knew you were all too weak and selfish to
stop what’s coming. He gave up his soul because he gave
up on you.
CORDELIA
Right. Bye-bye.
She throws a handful of sand on him to initiate the spell and Angelus is
hurled across the cage and slams into the wall. He struggles to his feet,
gasping, as Wesley starts the incantation.
WESLEY

ANGELUS
Don’t kid yourselves…
WESLEY
Fortis murus…
The flames on the candles shoot high into the air.
ANGELUS
I’ll still be around long after your corpses rot.
WESLEY
Kesta sartuum…
The entire hotel shakes and creaks around them.
WESLEY

Angelus screams and doubles over in pain as a glowing wispy-white cloud
rises from the center of the circle and snakes toward him.
ANGELUS
I promise you, this isn’t…

The cloud encircles Angelus and lifts him off the floor. He moans in pain
as the glowing energy envelops his body. The soul-eater’s skull explodes
and the energy disappears. Angelus drops to the floor, stunned.
CORDELIA

I’m so sorry.
LORNE
It worked.
CONNOR
Did it?
ANGEL
Fred?
FRED
What?
ANGEL
You came down the stairs. You had blood and I grabbed…
FRED

CORDELIA

He keeps humming the tune as Lorne breaks into a huge smile.

He hugs Cordelia and plants a kiss on her cheek.

forbid… (sighs) I can give orders from down in here and
the new ones are: no more back-biting, fist-fighting,
fraternizing or vengeance. From now on you focus on one
thing: making it out alive. ’Cause I’m only going to say this
once. What Angelus told you was a lie. I haven’t and will
never give up on you. We’ll get through this thing…

I can’t believe we didn’t crush you people years ago.
Angel ignores her.
ANGEL
Wes, you and Fred get back to Lilah’s books. We need any
new information we can get on this new player. Lilah,
make some coffee. Earn your keep around here. Lorne, I
want you out working low-pro real estate. If this thing is
bigger than the Beast, it’s going to be laying down roots
and it’ll need square-footage.
LORNE
(nods)
Good to have you back, boss.
ANGEL
In the meantime, Connor, Gunn, work damage control.
Sweep the surrounding blocks for civilians. Save who you
can.
Connor just stares at him.
ANGEL

He and Gunn head up the stairs after the others. Angel turns to Cordelia.
ANGEL
Cordy…
CORDELIA

ANGEL
I didn’t say anything.
CORDELIA
True. But I thought I should tell you up front that I don’t
take orders from guys too scared to step out of their cages.
ANGEL
I made the right call. This way everybody stays safe.
CORDELIA
And you don’t have to look anyone in the eyes. Bonus.
ANGEL
I hate that you saw me like that.
CORDELIA
Guess it’s only fair. Angelus said you saw me at one of my
not-most-shining moments. Besides, you’re not him. You
think we don’t get that but we do.
ANGEL
What if… what if the spell doesn’t last?
CORDELIA
The Powers need a champion, Angel. And obviously they
need one pretty bad, the way things are going. Who
knows? You might even be their only hope, Obi-Wan.
She smiles at him and he smiles back.
ANGEL
So how do I go up there?
CORDELIA

She takes out her keys and opens the locks. The door opens and he steps
out. She slips the keys back into her pocket and takes his hand, looking up
at him meaningfully.
CORDELIA
You’re not Angelus.
As she turns to lead him up the stairs, he yanks her violently back toward
him. She screams at the sight of his vampiric visage.
ANGELUS
Guess again.
FADE OUT
Act IV
20 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— BASEMENT— NIGHT 20
Resume. Thinking quickly, Cordelia kicks Angelus in the gut and decks
him with a right hook, knocking him away from her. She runs into the
cage and pulls the door shut, locking herself inside. Angelus reaches
through the bars and seizes her, yanking her forward and slamming her
head into the steel. She drops to the floor, unconscious.
ANGELUS
Stay down!
He heads up the stairs, his face shifting back to normal with a grin of
anticipation.
CUT TO:.ANGEL

21 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— OFFICE— NIGHT 21
Fred flips through ancient parchments, continuing her research. She hears
a noise and turns to find Angelus in the doorway.
ANGELUS
Sorry if I scared you.
FRED
Angel, I thought…
ANGELUS
(nervous)
Cordy let me out. Well, actually, I asked her to be let out.
You know what? Never mind.
He turns to go but Fred stops him.
FRED
No, wait.
His back to her, he grins knowingly.
FRED
I’m the one who’s sorry. After everything you’ve been
through, I…
He turns back to her, his expression innocent once again.
ANGELUS
Has been a little rough.
FRED

She glances at him sharply.
ANGELUS

The sound of breaking glass echoes from elsewhere in the hotel. Fred
turns, wondering what it is and when she turns back, the room is empty.
Angelus is gone.

22 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— LOBBY— NIGHT 22
Lilah and Wesley stand over several shattered coffee cups and a serving
tray.
LILAH
It’s my inner megalomaniac. I rebel at serving coffee.
Wesley looks up as Angelus walks in.
WESLEY
Angel. I thought you were confined—
ANGELUS
Change in plans. Cordy actually talked me out of staying
down there. Now I’ve got my own mission.
He grabs his coat as Gunn and Connor descend the stairs and enter the
lobby.
CONNOR
Which is?
ANGELUS
Too dangerous, son. I’m afraid you can’t go with me. (beat)
I have to go save the world.
He pauses, then walks out the door with a flourish. Lilah rolls her eyes as
Fred comes out of the office and looks up at them, confused.
FRED
So has anyone seen Cordy?
Pan down to the monitor on the counter showing Cordelia lying
unconscious in the cage in the basement.

Later. The group is gearing up, taking weapons from the cabinet and
arming themselves.
GUNN
Connor’s on point, three-party follow-up. Me, Wes and
Fred in the truck.
Cordelia sits on the couch holding an ice pack to her head. Gunn looks
over at her concerned.
GUNN
Cordy?
CORDELIA
I don’t understand how the spell didn’t work.
LILAH
Dud ex machina. There’s a surprise.
CORDELIA
We’ll be fine. Go. He’ll want to feed. A lot.
WESLEY
Our only advantage is Angelus might think we want to
capture him. I think we’re all agreed that’s not an option
anymore.
GUNN
Angelus is on the loose because we brought him in this
world. It’s our job to take him out of it.
WESLEY

Let’s go, while his trail’s still hot.
Connor and Gunn duck out the front door with Wesley and Fred
following, leaving Lilah and Cordelia alone in the hotel.

23 INT. LOS ANGELES STREETS— NIGHT 23
Fires burn everywhere. Chaos reigns. Vampires and demons prowl the
streets, picking off anyone they can find.
Angelus makes his way through the carnage, shaking his head in disgust.
ANGELUS
It’s like shooting fish in a barrel. Where’s the fun in that?
He grabs a man sitting on a bench only to find he’s already dead. He
drops the body as a little girl runs past. He seizes her and holds her up
only to find she’s a vampire.
ANGELUS
What happened to pedestrians? Human pedestrians? Is
there no fast food left in Los Angeles?
CUT TO:
24 INT. HYPERION HOTEL— LOBBY— NIGHT 24
Cordelia sits on the sofa, dejected, the ice pack pressed to her head.
CORDELIA
And he let me think I was talking him into it.
LILAH
Those evil geniuses… get ya every time..ANGEL

The Beast and then Angelus and now there’s something
worse… I thought the spell was—
LILAH
Divine intervention? Trust me. You have more chances of
winning the lottery six times in a row. I had the numbers
done.
CORDELIA
It just makes me question—

(o.s.)
What’s it all for, huh? I would, too, if I were about to die.
Lilah and Cordelia look up at the balcony and react as Angelus leaps off of
it toward them. Lilah raises her gun and fires as Angelus somersaults to
the floor. He’s too quick and the rounds impact harmlessly against the far
wall. She drops the empty gun in frustration as Cordelia raises her
crossbow and fires. Her aim is true and the bolt flies directly at Angelus…
but he catches it in mid air.
ANGELUS
This time…
He whips the bolt back at her and it embeds itself in Cordelia’s thigh. She
drops to the floor with a scream.
ANGELUS
…you stay down! (to Lilah) As for you, luscious thing, I
mean, you were going to let me out of that cage so, let’s
see, I’ll give you a 10-second start? Ten, nine…
Lilah doesn’t hesitate. She bolts down a side corridor and out of sight.
ANGELUS
Now there’s a girl who takes advantage of her
opportunities.
Gasping in pain on the floor, Cordelia reloads the crossbow and fires. This
time the bolt goes wide and slams into the wall next to Angelus’ head.
ANGELUS
Don’t be jealous, kitten. She’s just the warm-up. I’ll save
the good stuff for you..ANGEL

He smiles wickedly and walks off down the hall.

25 INT. LOS ANGELES STREETS— NIGHT 25
Gunn’s truck moves slowly down the ravaged street with Connor
running out front in the lead. He comes to a stop and the others get out
and meet up with him.
CONNOR
It doesn’t make sense.
WESLEY
What doesn’t?
CONNOR
Angelus would want to feed but his scent ends here and
it’s not a highly-populated area.
GUNN
It ends here? Somebody pick him up?
CONNOR
He would go to the place where he could wreak the most
damage.
WESLEY
Which doesn’t necessarily mean highly-populated..ANGEL

Angelus moves through the darkened corridors, hunting Lilah.

Lilah tries to stay ahead of him but she’s moving slow, her side giving her
pain. She ducks into the shadows as he moves past further down the hall.
She waits until he’s out of sight, then comes out of hiding and limps in the
opposite direction.
Angelus pops up behind her from around a corner.
ANGELUS
Boo!
She raises her axe to strike but he easily wrenches it from her grasp and
knocks her to the floor..ANGEL

Oh, Lilah, I had such high hopes for us. Your devious
mind, my killer instincts… what a team we would have
made.
LILAH
Could still make.
ANGELUS
(laughs)
Always were a closer. Unfortunately, with the new big
scary in town, you’re just not looking so tough anymore.
And I’m a winning-team kind of guy. Couple that with the
recent people shortage, you know you’re lucky I’m letting
you yak this long.
He leaps to attack her and she raises her legs, using his own momentum
to hurl him up and over a nearby stairway banister. Angelus tumbles
head over heels to the bottom of the stairs as Lilah struggles to her feet
and pushes a supply cart down the stairs on top of him, then immediately
turns and limps down the hall in the opposite direction as fast as she can.
Suddenly a hand shoots out of the shadows and seizes her by the throat,
pushing her up against the wall.
It’s Cordelia.
LILAH
He’s gonna kill us.
CORDELIA
I know.
Cordelia whips out the Beast’s dagger and drives it through Lilah’s neck in
one smooth motion, then drops her lifeless body to the floor. Cordelia
looks into Lilah’s sightless eyes and sneers..ANGEL
