Giles contains Willow in a binding spell that puts her into stasis. He tells Buffy that a powerful coven in England felt a dark force powered by grief and contacted the former Watcher. A seer in the coven told him about Tara’s death and gave him special powers to try to contain the distraught witch. The slayer and the watcher go into another room to talk and wind up laughing at all that has happened since he returned to England. He recriminates himself for leaving her, but Buffy says that he was right to go. Giles tells her that the coven is working on a way to extract Willow’s powers without killing her. The witch comes into the room behind an unconscious Anya. She and the watcher fight. He too tries to talk her out of her vindictive rage. She thrusts her hand into him and drains his energy. Dawn, Xander, Jonathon and Andrew are searching for a place to hide. Dawn tells Xander that Spike would have stayed to fight. Angrily, he tells her that Spike tried to rape Buffy. They arrive at the cemetery, but cannot get into any of the tombs. Willow tosses a ball of fire and sends it after the group in the graveyard. Buffy races to rescue her sister and the others. The ball of fire crashed to earth. Xander is knocked unconscious. Dawn and Buffy fall into a hole in the earth. Jonathon and Andrew run off. Anya surveys the wreckage of the magic shop and discovers Giles. Giles tells Anya that he is dying, because Willow drained him. That is the only way that he could stop her vengeance. The witch is contacting a she-demon and her minions who were trapped in an earthquake. She raises a temple out of the ground. Buffy allows Dawn to help her fight the demons that are coming out of the walls of the crypt. Xander arrives at the top of the mountain and reminds her that they have been friends since kindergarten. He keeps telling her he loves her. Each time she zaps him and opens wounds in his body. Xander says, "If you want to kill the world, begin with me." She begins to sob and Xander rocks her. Slowly the evil magics and her anger dissipate. Meanwhile at the Magic Box, Giles gets up. He tells Anya that the threat is over, because somehow something awakened the humanity in Willow. In the tomb, the demons disappear and Buffy realizes that the world has been saved. She cries and Dawn feels that her sister is sad because the world didn’t end. The slayer reassures her sister that she is glad and that she wants to show her sister the world. Jonathon and Andrew hitch a ride with a huge, tattooed truck driver. Spike has finished all three trials. The demon restores his soul.
