Buffy Season I Episode Guide: Invisible Girl
SYNOPSISCordelia is running for the May Queen election at Sunnydale High, but her real concern should be the invisible force that is attacking her closest friends. Her boyfriend, Mitch, is attacked by what appears to be a floating baseball bat in the boys' locker room. Before he is struck by the bat, he hears a girl laughing, despite the fact that he can't see anyone. As he is carried out of the school on a stretcher, he tells Buffy what he saw and heard. Buffy investigates the locker room and finds the word "LOOK" written on the lockers. Nobody can figure out what this message means.
Later, Cordelia's friend, Harmony, is pushed down a flight of stairs. She breaks her ankle during the fall. Buffy hears the sound of a girl giggling at the top of the stairway, so she runs up the stairs and looks for the source. She follows her for a while, but loses track of her in the band room. Since both Harmony and Mitch have a common friend in Cordelia, Buffy decides to investigate the school around the area where Cordelia is trying on her dress for the May Queen coronation at the Bronze. She hears a flute playing in the band room, but she can't find anything there. Giles also hears the flute while he's in the library, but he is soon surprised by Angel's sudden appearance. Angel tells Giles that the Master is up to something, but he can't figure out what is going on. He asks if Giles has read all the books detailing the Slayer prophecies. Giles says that the Pergamum Codex, which contains the most complete prophecies about the Slayer's final years, has been lost for many years. Angel informs Giles that he can get the book for him, then leaves.
Willow provides Buffy with a list of the missing students at Sunnydale High. They pinpoint a girl named Marcie Ross. Her only activity was band, which would explain the sounds of the flute coming from the band room. Buffy investigates the band room and notices a shoe print on a chair. She looks up and notices the removable ceiling panels. She climbs up into the ceiling and finds an area filled with books and pictures. She takes a Sunnydale High yearbook and opens it to find that it belongs to Marcie Ross. Realizing that Marcie is the culprit, Buffy doesn't notice a floating knife behind her, just inches from her neck. As Buffy closes the yearbook, the knife lowers, as Marcie does not kill her. Elsewhere, Ms. Miller, the English teacher, is attacked by Marcie. She wraps a plastic bag around Ms. Miller's breath, causing her to suffocate. Cordelia enters the room and pulls off the bag before Ms. Miller suffocates to death. Cordelia then sees a floating piece of chalk writing one word on the blackboard: "LISTEN".
Buffy shows the yearbook to Willow, Xander, and Giles in the library. All the messages in the book from other students say nothing more than "Have a nice summer," proving that Marcie had absolutely no friends at Sunnydale High. They find a picture of Cordelia in the book that is scribbled over, signalling that Marcie is planning to do something horrible to Cordelia. Just then, Cordelia enter the library. She begs Buffy to help her, since she knows that she is the next target. After much pleading, Buffy decides to help Cordelia. Cordelia decides that she still has to try on her dress one more time before going to the Bronze for the coronation. She changes in a janitor's closet while Buffy waits outside. Meanwhile, Giles, Willow, and Xander hear Marcie's flute playing. This time, it's coming from the basement, so they descend the staircase and try to find Marcie. Xander finds a stereo deck that is playing the music, but before they can get out, the door slams shut. As they try to open it, they notice the sound of a gas leak. Marcie has opened a gas valve and broken off the shut-off valve, preventing the trio from stopping the gas leak. As they nearly pass out from the gas, Angel opens the basement door and pulls them all out to safety. Before they leave, Angel gives Giles the Codex, then goes into the room to turn off the gas leak. Back at the janitor's closet, Buffy hears a muffled scream coming from inside the closet. Buffy breaks into the room and sees Cordelia being pulled up into the ceiling. Buffy follows them and finds Cordelia lying unconscious. Before she get them out, Marcie hits Buffy aside, causing her to fall on a weak spot in the ceiling. Buffy falls through and crashes down on a desk in the classroom below. As she tries to get up, Marcie injects her with a needle, and Buffy passes out.
Buffy and Cordelia wake up in the Bronze. They are both strapped to chairs. Cordelia can't feel her face, as if it is numb from something. They notice the word "LEARN" written on the curtain in front of them. Just then, a medical cart is slowly pushed out in front of them as Marcie talks to them. She pulls out a scalpel and threatens to cut up Cordelia's face. As Buffy struggles to break the ropes, Marcie takes one swipe at Cordelia, cutting a large gash in her left cheek. Buffy kicks the cart in Marcie's direction, causing her to stumble towards the curtain. Buffy breaks free of her ropes and tries to free Cordelia, but she is hit suddenly by Cordelia. She tries to fight Marcie, but she only succeeds in swinging at thin air. Finally, Buffy stands still, closes her eyes, and uses her other senses to locate Marcie. As soon as she hears a creak behind her, she spins around and punches Marcie into the curtain. The curtain falls down on her, making her shape visible. Buffy takes one more punch at Marcie, knocking her down. Immediately, two FBI agents enter the Bronze and take Marcie into their custody. They leave, telling Buffy and Cordelia to forgot what had just happened.
The next day at school, Cordelia thanks Buffy and her friends for all their help. She then turns back to her friends and begins behaving like her old self again. Elsewhere, in an unknown building, Marcie is brought into a classroom filled with invisible students. The teacher instructs them to turn their textbooks to page 54, which reads: "Chapter 11: Infiltration and Assassination".
