When Harry Met Sally has made the transition from screen to stage with Luke Perry starring as Harry Burns, a man who doesn't know how to communicate to the woman he loves. Perry spoke about his role, the movie and Alyson Hannigan.
The film first hit the cinemas in the late 80's following a run of action films. It was a huge success amongst the movie going public. Perry said, "The play is 90% of the movie. There were a few things that wouldn't translate on stage but we have the basics. It's basically about the communication and miscommunication between a man and a woman."
Alyson Hannigan plays Sally Albright, the woman who Harry has an on-off affair with for a long period of time. Perry said, "At the beginning, Alyson and I were overwhelmed. We both loved the movie and we were nervious about messing it up. But it's turned out to be really good."
Hannigan is new to the theatre, which many say is a very different art to that of making television. But Perry reassured us that she was doing well. He said, "She is very capable and very strong. She's a quick study."
There are scenes in the play which has caused controversy, namely the famous, "I'll have whatever she's having" scene in which Sally proves to Harry that women can fake orgasms. All this takes place in a crowded diner. But Perry is not far from controversy himself as he reveals an intimate part of his body to the audience.
"If you go to the theatre and see the actors ass on stage then you are always going to clap!" said Perry of the well received scene. "The play is about trading intimacy so what better way to get that across then having a scene where I bare my butt."
Unlike Hannigan, Perry is no stranger to the stage having appeared on Broadway. But it is his first visit to the West End. Perry is loving the experience.
"The theatre is so old and tall and just beautiful," said Perry. I'm sitting in a dressing room that has been used by the likes of Peter O'Toole and Sir John Gielgud. It's amazing."
