Scooby tops the UK film chart
Super canine sleuth Scooby-Doo has won out in a catfight with comic Mike Myers and Oscar-winner Halle Berry to top the box office charts.

"Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed", the sequel to the 2002 film based on the TV cartoon series, took 3.55 million pounds in its opening weekend, Screen International said on Tuesday.

Starring Freddie Prinze Jr, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Matthew Lillard and Linda Cardellini as the crime-fighting pals of the animated Great Dane, the film follows the gang as they try to unmask a villain scaring the town of Coolsville.

"Dr Seuss' The Cat in the Hat", the film adaptation of the children's book with Myers in the lead role, debuted in second spot despite critics in the United States giving it a mauling.

Thriller "Gothika", was another new entry in third place. It stars Halle Berry as a criminal psychologist who wakes one day to find herself incarcerated in her own psychiatric ward.

Mel Gibson's controversial "The Passion of The Christ" dropped from top spot to fourth, but still managed to take in another 1.37 million pounds.

"Starsky and Hutch", the big screen satire of the 1970s TV show slipped to fifth, ahead of the remake of George Romero's 1978 zombie horror flick "Dawn of the Dead".

"Welcome to the Jungle", an action comedy starring Dwayne Johnson and Christopher Walken, was in seventh, one ahead of "Monster", the drama which won actress Charlize Theron an Oscar for her portrayal of real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos.

"Mona Lisa Smile", starring Julia Roberts as a maverick teacher at a female college in 1950s New England and "Honey" made up the top 10.
