The moment Julie Benz appeared on our screens as Darla in the first episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, we were captivated. We watched her manipulate Angel, fight Buffy and then disappear into a pile of dust. But Darla was the vampire full of surprises when she reappeared in spin-off show, Angel where she subtley tormented Angel, then the lucky girl bedded him, only to turn up nine months later on the verge of a miracle labour. It was then that she made the ultimate sacrifice. She staked herself in order for her baby to survive. Once upon a time, she had given Angel death. Then, she gave him a life. She gave him a son.
She was Angel's sire, partner in crime and lover, and even the hardest Bangels struggled not to find her endearing. Much of this is down to the fantastic writing from the Whedon team, but no one could deny the beauty and talent of Julie Benz was enthralling.
