Happy Birthday, David
|
David Patrick Boreanaz first came to our attention as the extremely mysterious Angel in the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer eight years ago. He almost didn't get the job after Joss Whedon expressed concerns. Luckily, Whedon put all of his trust and faith in the casting directors who signed him immediately. Whedon instantly became a fan of Boreanaz and although the original deal was for twelve episodes, Whedon wrote the character of Angel into season two which would be the biggest challenge of Boreanaz's career.
Starting off as the misunderstood vampire with a soul, the writers decided it was time to unleash the demon within in the second season of Buffy. Angel lost his soul which gave Boreanaz the chance to play Angelus. Sadistic and twisted, Angelus proved a challenge for Boreanaz and one he loved.
"I love being Angelus because he's so wild and over-the-top," says David who got another chance to play Angelus in season four of his spin-off show.
Playing the vampire with a soul, it was inevitable and somewhat "cliched", as Joss Whedon described it, to put the vampire and Slayer played by Sarah Michelle Gellar together. The often heart wrenching relationship was a hit with the fans as they watched the journey of the vampire and Slayer, Buffy Summers unfold over a three year period.
"I had to split those kids up," admitted Joss Whedon, who wrote Boreanaz's character of Angel out of Buffy after three years. But the fans love affair with Angel wasn't over yet. Instead, Boreanaz went on to star in the spin-off show, Angel which is due to finish after a very successful five year run later this week.
Throughout the years, Boreanaz has seen his character grow. Having distanced himself from the love of his life, Buffy, Angel went on to cope with the reappearance of his former partner-in-crime and sire, vampire Darla, as well as the birth of his son Connor and the difficult relationship that followed. But Angel has never faltered from his ultimate goal - to earn redemption and one day become human.

Although Boreanaz will cease to play Angel, he has high hopes for a big screen movie where he can return to play one of the most famous vampires in television history.
David said, "Shooting a film version of Angel would be pretty amazing, the stuff you could do. I would love to shoot it really deep. I'd love to go all over Europe. I think that would be great, with a great storyline."
As well as starring in the movies Valentine and The Crow: Wicked Prayer, Boreanaz has also tried his hand at music. Last year, he starred in Dido's White Flag music video which topped the charts.
Boreanaz resides in Los Angeles with his wife Jaime Bergman and son Jaden.

The staff and readers at Buffy-vs-Angel would like to wish David Boreanaz a very happy birthday. We'd also like to thank him for his dedication and commitment to the much loved character of Angel for the last eight years. |
