BBC cuts sites in savings drive!
The BBC is to scale back on its online operations in a bid to save £6m. The broadcaster will close websites and reduce investment in others.

The sites to be scrapped include the US sports and local history pages, as they were deemed too similar to sites offered in the commercial sector.

Funding for the cult TV site will also be reduced, which features shows such as Buffy, 24, and The Simpsons. However, the BBC said the Dr Who section of the site will remain intact.

Earlier this year the Government ordered the BBC to redefine its online presence and justify its role as a public service broadcaster. The BBC is hoping the closures will help it make the case for charter renewal.

BBC director of new media Ashley Highfield said money saved from the cutbacks will be used in “new broadband projects”.

In addition, a new film area on the BBC site will be set up, which will show short films from upcoming directors.
