The long-gestating "Wonder Woman" project may actually come to term thanks to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon. "The Matrix" producer Joel Silver revealed at the 2005 San Francisco WonderCon on Saturday, Feb. 19 that he's courting the popular writer-director for the project featuring the lasso-wielding superhero, report news sources.
"I'm trying to work a deal with Joss," says Silver. "It's complicated, but I would love him to do it. It would be great if he could."
As "Buffy" fans know, Whedon is more than capable of creating a strong female protagonist who kicks butt, looks good and quips with the best of them. Naturally, Silver expects Whedon to put his own twist on "Wonder Woman."
"It's a reinvention. When Tim Burton reinvented Batman after Adam West, and when Donner reinvented Superman after George Reeves -- it's time to do that with Wonder Woman," says Silver. "I thought Joss was a great idea because he understands a kind of female superhero character and also he's great at what he does."
Whedon has had experience with comic book heroes. He's been writing for Marvel's "Astonishing X-Men," and he penned "Fray," a vampire slayer spin-off comic book set 200 years after "Buffy," an "Angel" tie-in "Angel: Long Night's Journey" and various stories for "Tales of the Vampire."
Besides "Buffy" and its spin-off "Angel," Whedon is also the creator of the short-lived space/Western series "Firefly," the basis for the upcoming big-screen project "Serenity," which will be released in the fall. His other feature writing projects include the original "Buffy" movie, "Alien: Resurrection" and "Titan A.E."
