The Warner Independent Pictures project will mark the directorial debut of "Serendipity" scribe Marc Klein and is set to begin production in September.
The adaptation focuses on a young New York book editor (Gellar, apparently) who looks at getting the right man as a game. She things that her new partner, an older man with a great deal of power, is her biggest score yet, but things are about to get more complicated.
"She is really the character," producer Deborah Del Prete tells The Hollywood Reporter of her star. "She is smart, bright and an intellectual. She really is like a New York girl: well-read, sexy and on top of her game. I also think it's a role she hasn't done before, and I think when actors try something new, that's when you get the best performance."
Del Prete and Gigi Pritzker are producing through their Odd Lot Entertainment. Darryl Taja is also producing, with Linda McDonough as a co-producer and Suzanne Warren executive producing.
The $100 million-plus gross for "The Grudge" helped reposition the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" star as a movie draw after a series of "Scooby-Doo" films and box office duds like "Simply Irresistible" and "Harvard Man." Up next for the actress is Richard Kelly's "Southland Tales."
