Buffy Season I Episode Guide: Nightmares
SYNOPSISBuffy has just woken up from a nightmare in which she entered The Master's lair and was bitten by him. Her father is picking her up after school so they can spend the weekend together. At school, one of the students, Wendell, opens his textbook to find several spiders waiting inside it. They crawl all over his body as he screams in terror. During this moment, Buffy notices a young boy standing in the doorway, looking on as the event passes.
The next day, more strange events occur. Buffy finds out from Cordelia that there is a history test that day, but she hasn't studied at all for it. She tries to take the test, but she can't answer a single question. Before she can even write down her name, the bell rings, signalling the end of the class. As everyone gets up and leaves, Buffy notices the young boy in the doorway, the same boy she saw the previous day. Later, a girl goes down into the school basement for a smoke, but she is attacked by a large, ugly man with a club in place of his right hand. Before he attacks her, he says the words, "Lucky Nineteen". Buffy and Giles visit the girl at the hospital, but all she can tell them is what the man said to her. On their way out of the hospital, a doctor informs Buffy and Giles that the girl was the second victim of apparently the same attacker. The first victim was a twelve-year-old boy who is currently in a coma. Back at the library, Buffy notices an article of the young boy, named Billy Palmer. He was a kiddie league baseball player who was found severely beaten. She then recognizes the kid in the picture. He was the same kid standing nearby during Wendell's spider attack and her history test. Giles theorizes that Buffy saw an astral projection of the comatose boy. This means that Brian's dream state body has crossed over into the real world. Just then, Buffy's father, Hank Summers, enters the library and asks Buffy to speak with him alone for a moment. They go outside, and he tells her that the real reason he left her mother was that couldn't stand to live with Buffy anymore. As tears stream from her eyes, Buffy listens in horror as her father explains that she was a big disappointment to him. He leaves her there, and as she wipes away her tears, Buffy notices Billy watching in the distance.
Back inside Sunnydale High, Xander and Willow enter their class, but as they pass through the door, the studens inside begin laughing. Willow turns around to see that Xander is wearing nothing but his boxer shorts. Xander tries to pinch himself awake, then runs out of the class, screaming. Meanwhile, Buffy meets up with Billy inside the school gym. He tries to explain to her that he is trying to hide from the ugly man that beat him up. Suddenly, the ugly man appears and clobbers Buffy. She tries to fight back, but he is too strong for her, and they flee from the gym. Back in the library, Willow and Xander rush in to find Buffy, but only Giles is there. Xander is now wearing his gym clothes, since he can't find his regular clothes. They realize that everyone's worst nightmares are coming to life, and it is a result of Billy's crossing over from the nightmare world. They split up to search for Buffy and tell her what is going on. Buffy and Billy pass through a hedge and suddenly find themselves in a cemetery at night. There, they meet The Master, who is now free, simply because Buffy fears it. He buries her alive in an open grave as she desperately screams out for help.
Willow finds herself in a kimono with her hair tied up above her head. She is about to perform an opera on stage. She tries to back out, but the stage manager pusher her through the curtains. When she opens her mouth, all that comes out is an awful squeak. Xander encounters a clown that has frightened him ever since his sixth birthday party. The clown is now brandishing a knife, and Xander runs for his life. He meets up with Willow, who is dodging flying food that the angry audience is throwing at her. They run into Giles, and all three run from the clown. Xander suddenly turns around, walks up to the clown, and lands a right hook punch right across the clown's painted face. They go outside and notice the dark cemetery across the street. They enter it and find Buffy's freshly-sealed grave, complete with her engraved tombstone. Giles realizes that he is living his nightmare of failing in his duties as the Watcher. As he says his apologies, Buffy suddenly rises from the grave. To their horror, Buffy is now a vampire. Giles gets her to keep herself together as they rush to the hospital to try and wake Billy up. At the hospital, they see Billy's astral body standing next to his physical body. The ugly man appears again, and Buffy fights him, eventually knocking him out in Billy's hospital room. She asks Billy to come closer and face his fears. Billy reaches over and pulls off the ugly man's mask, and in a flash, everything returns to normal. Billy wakes up as his kiddie league coach stops by. He reveals that he calls Billy his "Lucky 19". When he learns that Billy is awake and remembers everything, the coach tries to escape, but Xander grabs him while Giles pushes him back.
After school, Buffy's father shows up to pick her up for their weekend. As Buffy leaves, Willow learns from Xander that he still found Buffy attractive when she had turned into a vampire.
