Riassunto dell'episodio

Buffy ha un incubo nel quale viene attaccata dal Maestro. Più tardi in classe, uno studente apre il suo libro e ne escono enormi ragni che lo attaccano, mentre dalla finestra della classe vediamo un bambino. 

Intanto il Maestro spiega al Consacrato che la paura è ciò che c'è di più forte al mondo e che presto ci avverranno dei cambiamenti. 

Buffy, Willow e Xander fanno delle domande al ragazzo attaccato dai ragni. Il ragazzo dice che recentemente ha avuto degli incubi nei quali succedeva la stessa cosa. Buffy scopre che per quel giorno è stato fissato un test di storia per il quale è completamente impreparata. Inizia a scrivere, guarda l'orologio e vede che è il tempo è già scaduto. Appare di nuovo il bambino. Una ragazza viene attaccata da un uomo. Più tardi in ospedale viene interrogata su cosa era successo, ed è in grado di fornire un solo indizio: il suo assalitore ha detto le parole: "Lucky Nineteen" (Diciannove Fortunato)

Xander Se il male si aggira qui intorno, noi lo troviamo, tu lo sconfiggi, poi si festeggia. 

Xander entra in classe e tutti lo fissano: sta indossando solamente i boxer. 

Buffy trova sul giornale una foto del bambino apparso sulla scena di tutti gli incidenti L'articolo dice che il bambino, caduto dalle scale dopo una partita di baseball,  è finito in coma. Buffy nota il numero della sua uniforme: 19. Giles dice che anche se il bambino si trova in ospedale, Buffy potrebbe aver visto il suo corpo astrale che ha la capacità di viaggiare nel tempo e nello spazio.

Il padre di Buffy va a prenderla a scuola e le spiega che lui e sua madre hanno divorziato a causa dei continui problemi creati da Buffy, rivelatasi una vera delusione. Buffy è scioccata, il bambino appare di nuovo.

Willow e Xander parlano con Giles che spiega loro che li incubi di tutti loro si stanno avverando, rendendo ognuno vulnerabile ad ogni sorta di pericoli. Buffy parla con il bambino che le spiega che l'uomo che aveva attaccato la ragazza vuole ucciderlo.

 All'improvviso appare l'uomo e inizia ad attaccare Buffy.

Giles, Xander e Willow cercano Buffy. Willow però cade in un suo incubo: si trova su un palcoscenico e deve cantare un'opera della quale non conosce le parole. 

Anche Xander vive un altro dei suoi incubi: un clown di cui aveva paura da bambino lo minaccia con un coltello. Buffy e il bambino riescono a sfuggire all'uomo, ma all'improvviso si trovano in un cimitero di notte.

 Appare il Maestro che scaraventa Buffy in una tomba aperta. Willow, Xander e Giles devono trovare Buffy: a meno che Billy, il bambino, non esca dal coma, in poco tempo tutti gli incubi diventeranno realtà, e saranno irreversibili.

Xander bhè questa spiegazione è più concisa del solito.. è Billy! Chi è Billy?

Notano il cimitero immerso nell'oscurità e ci si dirigono. Vedono la tomba di Buffy (l'incubo di Giles), e l'osservatore si pente di non averla protetta meglio, ma Buffy esce dalla tomba: è diventata un vampiro. Giles la conforta dicendo che tornerà normale se Billy si sveglierà. 

Vanno all'ospedale e appare di nuovo l'uomo. Buffy lo attacca e gli fa da dare il colpo di grazia dallo stesso Billy. Buffy ritorna normale, e il vero Billy si sveglia dal coma. Il suo allenatore entra nella stanza e rimane scioccato vedendolo sveglio. Buffy capisce che l'allenatore aveva picchiato Billy dopo la partita accusandolo di averla persa per colpa sua.

 L'uomo cerca di fuggire ma viene bloccato da Xander.
Alla fine dell'episodio il padre di Buffy va a prenderla a scuola e si mostra felice di vederla. Ancora una volta Buffy saved the day :)

Willow: "My parents don't even bicker. Sometimes they glare." 

Cordelia: "Hello, dufus? You're in my light." 
Xander: "Wendell, what is wrong with you? Don't you know that she is the center of the universe and the rest of us merely revolve around her?" 
Cordelia: "Why don't you revolve yourselves out of my light?" 

Xander: "Wendell was in Cordelia's light" 
Wendell: "I'm so ashamed." 
Willow: "Why is she so Evita-like?" 
Buffy: "I think it's the hair." 
Willow: "Weighs heavy on the cerebral cortex." 

Xander: "Hey, guys, was there any homework?" 
Willow: "We're doing active listening today." 
Xander: "Cool. What's active listening?" 
Willow: "That would be the homework." 
Buffy: "Chapter Five: Active Listening. Where you put on your big ears and really focus on the other person." 
Wendell: "Ms. Tishler demonstrated it yesterday." 
Willow: "With you." 
Buffy: "She was wearing that tight sweater?" 
Xander: "Oh, the midnight blue angora. See, I was listening." 

Buffy: "Oh, no. My bag! I packed it for the weekend, and I forgot it." 
Joyce: "You and your dad can swing by the house and pick up your bag. It's not an international crisis." 

Joyce: "You just have to remember that your father adores you. No more than I do, by the way." 

Xander: "Well, the Hellmouth, the center of mystical convergence, supernatural monsters: been there. 
Buffy: "A little blase there, aren't you?" 
Xander: "I'm not worried. If there's something bad out there, we'll find, you'll slay, we'll party!" 
Buffy: "Thanks for having confidence in me."

Willow: "Okay, but we're still caring about the spiders here. Let's not forget the spiders." 

Xander: "Did you find any theories on spiders crawling out of books? Big, hairy, crawly--it's funny of you're me." 

Wendell: "I don't know what to say about that." 
Xander: "There's nothing to say. You saw two hundred insects. You gonzoed. Anybody would've." 
Wendell: "They're not insects. They're arachnids." 
Xander: "They're from the Middle East?" 

Willow: "What do you mean you 'love spiders'?" 
Xander: "It is platonic, right?" 

Doctor: "She'll recover. She's got a couple of shattered bones, a little internal bleeding. She got off pretty easy." 
Buffy: "Easy?" 
Giles: "Have you looked up the word lately?" 

Xander: "It's a dream. It's gotta' be a dream. (pinches himself) Ow! Wake up. (pinches himself again) Ow! Gotta' wake up. Aah!!! 

Buffy: "Did you find anything?" 
Giles: "I don't know." 
Buffy: "You don't know if you didn't find anything?" 

Giles: "I can't read." 
Buffy: "What do you mean? You can read, like, three languages." 
Giles: "Five, actually, on a normal day." 

Giles: "The boy's been in a coma for a week. How can this be possible?" 
Buffy: "What am I, Knowledge Girl now? Explanations are your terrain." 

Buffy: "Could I be seeing Billy's asteroid body?" 
Giles: "Astral body, and I don't know." 

Willow: "I would hate to have everyone paying attention to me like that." 
Xander: "With nudity! It's a total nightmare." 

Xander: "Um, our dreams are coming true." 
Giles: "Dreams? That would be a musical comedy version of this. Nightmares. Our nightmares are coming true." 
Willow: "So, why is this happening?" 
Giles: "Billy." 
Xander: "Well, that explanation was shorter than usual. It's Billy! Who's Billy?" 

Giles: "Somehow, I think he's crossed over from the nightmare world he's trapped in." 
Xander: "And he brought the nightmare world with him. Thanks a bunch, Billy!"

Willow: "How could he do that?" 
Giles: "Things like that are easier when you live on a Hellmouth." 

Xander: "It'll be faster if we split up to look for her." 
Giles: "Good idea." 
Willow: "Uh, uh, faster, but not really safer." 

Willow: "I'm not afraid. You'd think I'd be afraid, but I'm not." 

Xander: "All right! Someone else's loss is my chocolatey goodness." 

Buffy: "I don't see the ugly man. I also don't know where the sun and the rest of the world went." 

The Master: "Nobody died. What's the fun of burying someone if they're already dead?" 

Willow: "I had to sing. Very bad. To sing."
