Nell'episodio 4.03 The Harsh Light Of Day (L'accecante luce del giorno), Spike ritorna a Sunnydale, insieme ad Harmony, alla ricerca dell'anello di Amara (un anello in grado di rendere i vampiri invulnerabili). Spike trova l'anello ma Buffy riesce a sottrarglielo e lo fa recapitare ad Angel

Buffy: "What's the matter, Spike? Dru dump you again?"
Spike: "Maybe I dumped her!"
Harmony: "She left him for a fungus demon. That's all he talks about most days."
Spike: "Harm!"

Spike (after Buffy stakes him): Oh, do it again. It tickles. You know, in a good way.
Buffy: The Gem.
Spike: Oh yeah, the Gem of Amara. Official sponsor of my killing you.

Nell'episodio 4.06 Wild At Heart (Lupi mannari), Spike viene catturato da alcuni soldati e rinchiuso in una cella 

In Lie To Me vediamo Buffy approfittare della più grande debolezza di Spike, Drusilla. Buffy minaccia la vita di Drusilla per salvare da Spike e i suoi minions un gruppo di ragazzi che adoravano i vampiri e avrebbero voluto diventarlo. 

In What's My Line? Spike cattura Angel e assolda degli assassini per uccidere Buffy. Spike ha bisogno del sangue del sire di Drusilla per compiere un rituale che le restituirà la salute. Quando Buffy lo scopre si preparà per la lotta con Spike. La battaglia finisce con Buffy che fa cadere addosso a Spike un pianoforte e lascia il luogo pensando che lui e Drusilla siano morti. In realtà il rituale ha avuto il suo effetto, Dru sta di nuovo bene e si allontana con il suo uomo tra le braccia. 

Nell'episodio Surprise scopriamo che l'incidente dell'organo ha lasciato Spike vivo ma in una sedia a rotelle. Dru ha riacquistato la perfetta salute. Spike sembra molto diverso, silenzioso e depresso. 

Vorrebbe lasciare Sunnydale ma Dru la pensa diversamente. Vuole assemblare il giudice, un potente demone che brucia l'umanità delle persone. Buffy e Angel provano a fermarli ma sono costretti a  fuggire. 

Dopo che Buffy e Angel dormono insieme lui perde la sua anima e ritorna ad essere Angelus. Angelus ritorna assieme a Spike e Dru. Questo fa uscire Spike dalla depressione e lo riempie di gelosia. Angelus flerta costantemente con Drusilla e prende in giro Spike sulla sua debolezza. 

Appena Spike riacquista la sua forza e riesce ad alzarsi dalla sedia a rotelle cerca Buffy e le propone una tregua. 

Spike: "Hello, cutie."

Spike: "Hey! White flag here. I quit."
Buffy: "Let me clear this up for you. We're mortal enemies. We don't get time-outs."

Buffy: "What do you want?"
Spike: "I told you. I want to stop Angel. I want to save the world."
Buffy: "Okay, you do remember that you're a vampire, right?"
Spike: "We like to talk big... vampires do. "I'm going to destroy the world." That's just tough-guy talk. Strutting around with your friends over a pint of blood. The truth is, I _like_ this world. You've got...dog racing, Manchester United. And you've got people. Billions of people walking around like Happy Meals with legs. It's all right here. But then someone comes along with a vision. With a real... passion for destruction. Angel could pull it off. Good-bye, Picadilly. Farewell, Leicester-bloody-Square."

Buffy: "The whole earth may be sucked into hell, and you want my help 'cause your girlfriend's a big 'ho? Well, let me take this opportunity to not care."

Spike aiuterà Buffy a battere Angelus e a  fermare l'apocalisse; Buffy in cambio lascerà che lui e Dru lascino la città. 

Spike: "What, your Mom doesn't know?"
Joyce: "Know what?"
Buffy: "That I'm, uh...in a band. A rock band...with Spike here."
Spike: "Right. She plays the-the triangle--"
Buffy: "--Drums."
Spike: "Drums, yeah. She's hell on the old skins, you know."

Joyce: "Have we met?"
Spike: "You hit me with an ax one time. Remember? Uh, 'Get the hell away from my daughter!'"
Joyce: "Oh. So, do you, uh, live here in town?"

Buffy: "She killed Kendra."
Spike: "Dru bagged a Slayer? She didn't tell me. Good for her!"
Buffy: "..."
Spike: "Though not from your perspective, I suppose." 

Buffy con estrema riluttanza accetta, anche perchè Angelus ha catturato Giles. 

Spike: "You have your way with him, you'll never get to destroy the world. And I don't fancy spending the next month trying to get librarian out of the carpet."

Non appena Spike ha Dru si tira fuori e lascia Buffy a quella che sembra una morte sicura per mano di Angelus.

Spike: "I don't want to hurt you, baby. Doesn't mean I won't."
