Riassunto dell'episodio

Mentre Giles allena Buffy al cimitero, i due trovano un anello con dei misteriosi simboli. Apparteneva a un vampiro ucciso poco prima da Buffy. Vediamo il Maestro che parla ai suoi seguaci. Cinque persone moriranno e nella stessa notte arriverà il Consacrato, il più grande guerriero del Maestro.

Il giorno dopo Buffy e Giles scoprono che il simbolo sull'anello rappresenta l'Ordine d'Aurelius. I suoi seguaci hanno giurato di consegnare il Consacrato al Maestro.
Giles Che volevi? Owen Un libro. Giles Oh. Buffy Vede, questa è una scuola. Ci sono studenti che prendono libri per studiare e apprendere. Giles Cominciavo a sospettare che fosse mitologia. Owen Ho perso la mia Emily Dickinson. So che sembra sciocco, ma la porto sempre con me, un po' come la coperta di Linus. Buffy Anch'io ho qualcosa del genere: è una vera e propria coperta. Adesso non me la porto più in giro, ma... dicevi, Emily Dickens? Owen Emily Dickinson. Buffy Brava anche lei! Giles Oh, Emily Dickinson. Buffy Siamo due suoi ammiratori. Owen, un bel ragazzo amante della poesia, chiede a Buffy di uscire. Il buon umore di Buffy viene rovinato da Giles che ha scoperto che la terribile profezia del Consacrato si avvererà quella notte. Buffy è molto dispiaciuta di non poter andare al suo appuntamento. Seppur riluttante si reca al cimitero con Giles ma non accade nulla.
Giles Beh, sai come si dice, "Il gioco dell'ammazzavampiri è al 90% attesa". Buffy Non poteva dirmelo un 90% fa?
	Buffy si reca al Bronze ma Owen, stanco di aspettarla, sta ballando con Cordelia. Nel frattempo un bus ha un incidente. I suoi passeggeri inizialmente stanno bene ma vengono aggrediti da vampiri.
Il giorno dopo, Owen e Buffy decidono di riprovarci e questo non rende felici nè Giles nè il gelosissimo Xander.
Buffy Mi si è rotto l'orologio e non abbiamo altri orologi in casa e non sapevo più che ora nè che giorno fossero. Owen potrei darti il mio orologio.
	Mentre Buffy si prepara per l'appuntamento, Giles arriva a casa sua con le ultime notizie: cinque persone la notte prima sono morte in un incidente stradale, proprio come aveva predetto la profezia, e uno di loro era ricercato per omicidio. Questo porta Giles a credere che sia lui il Consacrato. Owen arriva a casa di Buffy e, nonostante il parere contrario di Giles, la cacciatrice esce con lui.
Xander (a Owen) Sai già che a Buffy non piace essere baciata? In realtà neanche essere toccata. Neanche essere guardata a dirla tutta. Buffy Comunque resto nei paraggi ok? E se verrà l'apocalisse mi faccia un beep.
Giles si reca all'obitorio per controllare i cadaveri. Appena arrivato viene attaccato da vampiri. Xander e Willow hanno seguito Giles per essere sicuri che non gli accadesse niente di male. I due vorrebbero aiutarlo ma si rendono conto che questo è un lavoro per Buffy e corrono al Bronze a cercarla.
Arriva Angel al Bronze. Cordelia vorrebbe parlargli ma anche lui va da Buffy. Vuole avvertire Buffy del Consacrato ma lei risponde che conosce già la profezia e che quella sera è uscita con Owen. Arrivano anche Xander e Willow. Buffy vorrebbe restare sola con Owen ma Xander chiede a Buffy di venire con loro all'obitorio.
Owen decide di andare con loro e nonostante Buffy gli chieda di restare al Bronze, il ragazzo li segue comunque. Mentre Buffy cerca degli indizi l'uomo ricercato per omicidio, morto nell'incidente la notte prima, ora vampiro, si sveglia.
Owen Ho letto molto sulla morte ma non avevo mai visto un cadavere prima. Voi dite che è normale che si muovano??
Owen colpisce il vampiro prima che possa fare del male a Buffy. La cacciatrice lo combatte e riesce a gettarlo nel forno crematorio. Buffy vorrebbe continuare il loro appuntamento ma Owen preferisce andar via. Il giorno dopo Owen dice a Buffy che non vede l'ora di avere un altro appuntamento con lei per sfiorare di nuovo la morte. Buffy, realizzando di aver rischiato di ucciderlo, chiede ad Owen di restare solo amici. Giles dice a Buffy che è in gamba e che ha infornato il Consacrato con disinvoltura.... ma vediamo il Maestro dire ai suoi seguaci che la cacciatrice non riconoscerà il Consacrato. Infatti scopriamo che il Consacrato non era il vampiro ucciso da Buffy, ma un bambino di otto anni, un'altra vittima dell'incidente d'auto, ora a fianco del Maestro.

Buffy: "You couldn't have told me that ninety percent ago?"

Xander: "So, you just went home?"
Buffy: "What was I supposed to do? Say to Owen, 'Sorry I was late. I was sitting in a cemetery with the librarian waiting for a vampire to rise so I could prevent an evil prophecy from coming to pass'?
Xander: "Or, 'Flat tire'?"

Buffy: "Which one do you think Owen will like better: the red or the peach?"
Xander: "Oh, you mean for kissing you and then telling all his friends how easy you are so the whole school loses respect for you and then talks behind your back? The red's fine.
Buffy: "Thanks. I'll go with the peach."

Giles: "You have a date?"
Buffy: "Yes, but I will return those overdue books by tomorrow."
Giles: "You're not getting off that easily!"
Owen: "Man, you really care about your work!"

Xander: "He's like Super Librarian. Everyone forgets, Willow, that knowledge is the ultimate weapon."

Owen: "So, where do you know Buffy from?"
Angel: "Work."

Owen: "Are we going to see a dead body?"
Buffy: "Possibly several."

Giles: "Buffy, when I said you could slay vampires and have a social life, I didn't mean at the same time."

Owen: "I read a lot about death, but I've never really seen a dead body before. Do they usually move?"
