Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) will star in The Grudge, the English-language remake of the Japanese supernatural horror movie Ju-On, Variety reported. Columbia Pictures has secured domestic distribution rights for the film, which is being produced by Ghost House Pictures, a genre division of Senator International, launched with Sam Raimi, the trade paper reported. Shooting will begin at Tokyo's Toho Studios in late January.

Takashi Shimizu, who wrote and directed the original film, will helm the remake, the trade paper reported. Producer Taka Ichise (Ringu), who also worked on the original, will team with Raimi and partner Rob Tapert to produce.
Stephen Susco is writing the screenplay, combining elements from the original Ju-On and its three sequels.
Ju-On is a new play on the Japanese vengeful-ghost horror fallback, directed by Shimizu Takashi. Ju-On is the story of a family that is killed by one of its own in a fit of rage, thus starting the curse that propels the film. It plays out in a series of near-vignettes that trace the chronology of the house where the deaths take place. These vignettes show the spreading of this curse as each witness or occupant of the dark house is afflicted with the curse from the house.
It looks like SMG will fall into the shoes of Nishina Rika, a social worker sent to check up on the last surviving member of the family, an old woman who is confined to her bed. As she starts to explore the house, the social worker finds a little boy named Toshio duct-taped into a closet (bad luck in any country). Sam Raimi's production company is producing the film, but not much word on any other star power just yet.
