 LONDON, October 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Grudge has scared off the opposition and shot to the top of the US box office this weekend, grossing a fantastic $40,000,000 in 3,245 theatres, with an average of over $12,000 per venue. This makes The Grudge the third biggest October opening of all time.
The Grudge took control of the box office grossing more than the rest of the top five combined as young moviegoers looking for a good scare a week before Halloween lined up in huge numbers. Many elements contributed to the powerful performance. With I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream 2 as well as TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer to her credit, Gellar brought plenty of star-power to her fifth career top spot debut which featured her in exactly the type of film that fans wanted to see her in.
The Grudge is the first production from Ghost House, a new film company set up by Sam Raimi, the man responsible for classic horror titles such as Evil Dead and the director of Spider-man and Spider-man 2.
Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is an exchange student studying social work in Japan who innocently agrees to cover for a nurse who didn't show up for work. When she enters the assigned home, she discovers an elderly American woman who is lost in a catatonic state while the rest of the house appears deserted and disheveled.
As she is tending to the stricken old woman, Karen hears scratching sounds from upstairs. When she investigates, she is faced with a supernatural horror more frightening than she could ever imagine. Within this house, a chain of terror has been set in motion resulting from a terrifying evil that was born years before. As more people die, Karen is pulled into the cycle of horror and learns the secret of the vengeful curse that has taken root in this house.
Now she must stop it before it's too late.
The Grudge is directed by Takashi Shimizu from a screenplay by Stephen Susco based on JU-ON: The Grudge, written and directed by Takashi Shimizu. The film is produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise
THE GRUDGE is a Universal Pictures International film distributed through United International Pictures and opens in theatres across the UK & Ireland on November 5, Certificate 15.
