THE FANS

Welcome to the Bronze!

We mentioned earlier the internet Buffy Posting Board where fans of the show gather each week to debate, discuss and sometimes destroy all things Buffy and Angel. Luckily for them, the writers, actors, composers of the show and even Joss himself frequent the board to read fans reactions and get an instance response to how the show is faring. This can be flattering and frustrating at the same time and Tim has been involved in this experience before. "I first came upon that when I was on Lois & Clark and there was actually a very large internet fan-base following. It was just trippy to write an episode, have it air and then go on the moment after it aired and there are people talking about it, and I got involved with those people. I post sometimes on the Bronze and some other boards and I love it.
"I post sometimes
on the ‘Bronze’
and I love it, but
mostly you want
to be worshiped."
Although it can drive you insane because sometimes they don’t like things." (laugh) Nothing wrong with honest feedback! "Sure, but mostly you want to be worshiped."

There can not be any higher form of worship then your own Web Site! Although Tim doesn’t have an Official one of his own, there are always fans willing to provide that service and one such site is the Minearketeer's Fan Club Web Site. Run by Kristen Reidel. With its Wolfram & Hart theme, it gives the fan a concise file of information on Tim’s career, past and present as well as news links. It is also supported by Tim himself as he willingly provides answers to questions from his fans and fun insides views into the show. "Well the club honestly started as a fluke," replies Kristen on how she got involved with Tim and the site. "The night that ‘Somnambulist’ aired, Tim was posting at the Bronze talking about how David Fury (Writer on Buffy) was always bragging about his fan club (The Fury Fanatics). So I decided to start one for Tim. It wasn't until after I'd started the club that I came to realize just how talented the man is. I can easily see Tim, a few years down the road, running his own show, complete with thousands of admiring fans who all think he's god. The wonderful thing about Tim is that he never forgets he's there to tell a story. On a show like Angel, there's always a lot going on. You have action, drama and comedy in every episode and it's easy to lose focus. But Tim manages to balance all of those elements and still tell an amazing story. He's a genius, in that seemingly effortless, really annoying way." (laugh) And how does Tim respond to that? Nothing but Net! "What can one say? Kristen does a splendid job and I'm honored that anyone would take the time to do something like that. It's kinda spiffy," returns Tim.

Fans are also the first to point out any oddities in the show to the writers. One such fan sent us a bit of information that I asked Tim about. ‘In early 19th Century London, England there were several illegal fight clubs and bare knuckle fighters and one of them was named Tom Crib. He ran a boxing club saloon called Crib’s Parlor.’ Now here’s the irony. Crib was the demon in the episode ‘The Ring’ which centered around a demon fight club! "I feel that was coincidence," assures Tim but he offers this up in return. "Here’s a bigger coincidence and that was that Jane Espenson who wrote ‘Rm w/ a Vu’ . . . there’s a scene, where Angel goes to Kate, and she makes fun of the fact that he only has one name and she says, ‘private detective’s don’t have one name.

Fight Club never looked as
rough and tough as ‘The Ring’

Rock stars and Popes, they have one name.’ and Angel says, ‘You got me, I’m the Pope.’ Then, five episodes later, in ‘Somnambulist’, the tabloids have dubbed the killer The Pope. So Angel goes to Kate and he sees this and he thinks it’s him. Which I got a couple e-mails, ‘that was so great, you set that up so early,’ and it was a complete coincidence." (laugh)

Whether coincidence or not, it just goes to prove that the talent behind this man is unprecedented. Always one to laugh at himself and what he does, he is a creative force that serves Angel very well. The energy to which he approaches his job each week is evident in the final product! Just look at the top three of your favorite episodes from season one and I guarantee that Tim wrote one of them if not two. Hey, we gotta leave room for Joss in there somewhere! If you’d like to read more about Tim and his craft inside the world of Angel, check out the Dragon*ConBehind the Scenes’ feature we did earlier in the summer. We look forward to a great new season of Angel, especially starting with Episode 2 as the credits roll . . . Written by Tim Minear, sit back, enjoy it, "there is much good in it!" We agree, he’s very bitchen!
