The 35th Anniversary

All aboard for Comic-Con 2004!
he San Diego Comic-Con International took off like light speed on Wednesday night, July 21 as, once again, all pre-registered members of the 4-day event got to partake in Preview Night. With access to the Exhibition Hall before anyone else, they got a first-hand look at over 460,000 square feet of displays from every bit of comic merchandise imaginable to the incredible presentations by New Line Cinema and Lucasfilms. Come Thursday morning and continuing on until Sunday, July 25th close to 100,000 attendees crossed the threshold of the San Diego Convention Center. In addition to the appearance by Sarah Michelle Gellar there were dozens of celebrities on hand to promote their new movies which included Keanu Reeves and Djimon Hounsou for Constantine, Jude Law for Sky Captain, Jessica Alba for Sin City, Jessica Biel for Blade: Trinity, Lance Henriksen for Alien vs. Predator and so many more. Room 20 presented some of the biggest draws in the Question & Answer panels; was host to the Star Wars Fan Film Awards on Thursday night, the Eisner Awards on Friday night, and the ever-popular Masquerade on Saturday night. Over 75,000 people attended Comic-Con last year, making it the largest Comic and Pop Culture event in the United States. Comic-Con utilizes the entire Center by offering over 600 hours of programming in the 4-day event schedule on all aspects of pop culture, including breaking into comics and independent filmmaking.

Appearances by artist of every form whether it be Marvel Comics' X-Men Reloaded and Joe Quesada, DC Comics, Ray Bradbury, June Foray, Writing Animated Films, Nickelodeon, Dark Horse Comics and Mike Mignola, to "The Simpsons", "Smallville" and "Farscape", they all found their place at Comic-Con and their fans found them! Add to that speakers, games, Anime film presentations, and you just can't find a bigger venue or what they have to offer. Returning for another year in the Exhibit Hall was the always popular Lord of the Rings Pavilion. Plus another famous trilogy of films with the giant Lucasfilms Pavilion devoted, of course, to Star Wars. And finally, new this year, Hall H was revealed. "What once sat empty off at the end of the building, waiting silently, some may say scheming silently for some special purpose," was brought to life by some of the most amazing presentations and appearances of the weekend. More on that further in the feature. Comic-Con is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to creating awareness of and appreciation for comics and related popular art forms, primarily through the presentation of conventions and events that celebrate the historic and ongoing contribution of comics to art and culture. It is never possible to cover everything that happens at Comic-Con, but this year we feel we've done the event better justice by covering a wide variety of highlights which took place and recapturing it here. So without further pomp, let the culture begin!

Dark Horse COMICS

Hellboy's leather duster

A leading fan favorite in the comic arena for "Buffy" and "Angel" fans is the always impressive Dark Horse Comics booth. Although the two series have culminated their comic storylines, there is the hopeful return of Joss Whedon's Fray that fans are looking forward to and it's certainly not out of the question. The good news for Fray fans is the overwhelming success of the graphic novel compilation of all 8-issues. The first edition pressing sold out and Dark Horse is looking forward to a second edition pressing very soon. Fans can also look forward to the original Slayer Scythe to go into production as the rights to mass-produce the infamous prop used by both Melaka Fray and Buffy have been contracted and will be on the market soon. Of the three originally cast scythes, Joss, Fray artist Karl Moline, and Fox Studios are the proud owners. Dirk Wood, event manager for Dark Horse was happy to tell CoA what's new in the DH pipeline, "Ah where do we start! The Goon's been great; the sales keep increasing every month. The Hellboy crossover was a big hit with Goon. Fray's done really, really well. We have the new Concrete series coming in the works, a series called Milkman Murders people are excited about, and the new Shi [Shi: Ju-Nen] just started; comes out in the stores this week." On mentioning editor, Scott Allie, and the great response to his own original comic series, Devil Footprints, Dirk offered, "I think he does have plans to work on something new for that. Lots coming in the Horror line, it's going to be a huge year for the Horror line." From Hellboy, actor Ron Perlman, director Guillermo del Toro, and creator/artist Mike Mignola were on hand for autographs, also Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman (Mirror Mask, Violent Cases). On Saturday, the autograph highlight was Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez with special guests Jessica Alba, Jamie King, and Rosario Dawson from Sin City.

NEW LINE CINEMA HOME ENTERTAINMENT

Royal costumes from Lord of the Rings

Allene Kim, publicity rep for New Line Home Entertainment, commented on the extensive costumes exhibit from the third and final installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy: The Return of the King, "We're displaying the costumes which were actually used in the film and promoting the Extended Edition of The Return of the King which is coming out in December. We have a panel tonight where they'll be talking about everything that's gone into making the extended edition DVD." Not only were the costumes of our hero Hobbits on display, but the elegance and grandeur of the King himself, Aragorn and Lady Galadriel as well as a few of the evil foes of Sauron. The attention to detail is amazing and the chance to see these brilliant works of art up close certainly confirms that the Academy Award for Costume Design by Ngila Dickson and Richard Taylor was very justly deserved.

INTERVIEWS ~

THE LOST BOYS FOUND

On Saturday afternoon, a major focus in the Warner Brothers program was the upcoming DVD release of The Lost Boys - Special Edition. Two cast members were reunited to share their experiences working on the film and after a preview of the trailer the moderator announced, "Now, it is my pleasure to introduce Corey Haim and Corey Feldman from The Lost Boys." The 1987 film starred Jason Patric and Kiefer Sutherland along with Comic-Con's two guests, Patric and Haim played brothers who moved to the sleepy California coastal town of Santa Cruise with their mother. When Michael (Patric) runs into a gang (led by Sutherland) who are really vampires, Sam (Haim) finds help from the local vampire slayers (one of whom is Feldman) to save Michael from his transformation into one of the undead. During the Coreys' Q&A they both recalled a humorous moment from filming. Corey F. began, "Outside of the comic book store, which we actually had the comic book store in reality on the boardwalk, the front of it. The actual inside was somewhere else in Santa Cruise." Corey H. joins in, "Great story. We know we're in the murder capital of the world. Being in Santa Cruise at this point. I think it was the second and a half, going on the third month of filming. Everything is going smooth. I'm in Feldman's room, and this guy, all we hear is, 'Hey, Dudes? I know you're the two Coreys in there, man. Hey, you guys.' We're like, 'Oh no, what do we do?' So me and Corey go to the little peephole, and we're looking out. This guy has got a little black square bag. It doesn't look like beer," as the audience responds with laughter, "it looks like a bomb. We don't know what to do. Corey's like, 'Let's let him in, man.' And I'm like, 'We're in the murder capital of the world!'"

Corey Haim & Corey Feldman

CoA got a chance to sit down and chat with both Coreys after their Q&A panel. But first, let's make it perfectly clear, Corey Haim is on the left and Corey Feldman is on the right. The guys were having a blast at Comic-Con and getting a straight answer from either of them was harder than staking a 200-year old vampire, but it just proved to show how well the two actors got along after all these years and what contributed in making The Lost Boys an instant cult favorite among their fans. Here's a bit of the fun.

CoA: Are you surprised by the longevity of The Lost Boys?
Feldman: "I thought they should have cut 20-minutes out of it right away," Corey joked.
Haim: "I said it in there, after the first 10-years, I couldn't believe the longevity of the film and then I was just, 'You know what, this is going to be something that will last forever.'"
Feldman: "We're very grateful that people still know who we are."
Haim: "Absolutely."
CoA: Why do you think the appeal of vampire movies in general has lasted, allowing for such successes as "Buffy", "Angel" and Blade?
Feldman: "I think it's all a big mistake. I think people actually generally watched the fist vampire movie and got sucked in," he laughed, "It's one of those big time scams."
Haim: "We weren't even born yet, you weren't even when Bela Lugosi and a whole bunch of other people made the fist vampire film. It's been around forever. It's going to be around forever."
Feldman: "Christopher Lee, Jess Franko, let's pull some names from the past, the predecessors, the historians."
CoA: How do you feel still being associated with the movie?
Feldman: "I hate it, I try to stay away from it as much as possible. I do not do anything involving Lost Boys," he continued to joke, "I said it to my publicist and here I am. We're grateful; Richard Donnor is a god."
Haim: "I truly love it. He's a god in my book, I'm happy I created him and molded him into what he is today," laughed Corey.
CoA: How much fun did you have doing the commentary on the DVD?
Haim: "I had no fun at all, I loathed it. I was so happy that I was on the poster and he wasn't."
Feldman: "At the beginning of the whole thing I had my name on there, which was nice, because I felt like, 'I wonder why people mix up the two Coreys?' They mix us up because my name is on there and his wasn't but his picture's on there."

QUESTION & ANSWER PANELS ~

TRU CALLING ELIZA DUSHKU

Tru Davies, a college graduate, had started a job on the graveyard shift at the City Morgue. It wasn't long before she discovered that she had an unusual gift. Dead bodies asked her for help and she had the opportunity to prevent their deaths, a lot of responsibility for a young girl who was just trying to make her way through medical school. Over the course of the season, Tru learned to embrace her unique ability and then Jack shows up, there was always something a little bit off about him, but it didn't take Tru that long to figure out that while she was saving lives, he was in the business of taking them. It was clear Jack had a special power of his own, now it's up to Tru to stop him. Here is Tru Davies herself, Eliza Dushku! Thunderous applause broke out throughout the room for her second appearance at Comic-Con. Eliza greeted the roaring crowd with a little impromptu singing of the Phil Collins classic In The Air Tonight as she sang, "I've been waiting for this moment, for all my life, oh Lord… What's up everybody! How's it going?"

"Thank you for coming again, this is very exciting," she said as she took off her jacket to reveal the glittering logo of Super Girl on her shirt she laughingly commented, "Wow, my bosom is reflecting rainbows all across the room. I hope you guys liked the first season, we just started shooting the second year this week. We just finished shooting last night and it's awesome. We have a lot of mysterious twists coming at you this year. The cast is awesome; Zach's back, Sean, Jason, it's really going to be a hot year, I think." Eliza opened up the floor to questions from the audience and the first one asked Eliza for her favorite directors to work with. "Let's see, Kevin Smith, Joss Whedon, Jon Feldman, James Cameron, some of my personal favorite grown up geeks I guess you could say. I've been mesmerized and worked with at some point in my career and probably still am; I'd work with those guys any day. They give people the chance to play strong, smart, sexy individuals with flaws, which makes them fabulous, both the characters and the men." Eliza made it a point to stress how much she appreciates all the positive fan response to the series, "I really appreciate the support, sometimes it feels a little lonely when you gotta make such big decisions, I really genuinely feel 100% support from a lot of you people over the years. I feel so old; I've been in the business for fifteen years almost. So thank you." She was also genuinely excited by the addition of her new cast mate, "It was cool having Jason Priestly come on because the first season I think we started to getting to a point where there was no opposing force for Tru to play off or play against so the 'calling' kind of became that. I started to feel a bit like I wanted her to stop whining, she's feeling sorry for herself, 'Oh, poor me!' So to have Jason there really gives Tru the chance to own her power this year and have something to fight directly against, which I think will be very different and cool."

As to the upcoming season, Eliza teased, "There's some secret guest stars in the bag that we can be expecting any day now, there's some cool new characters introduced this year so keep an eye out for some familiar faces." This sparked Eliza to add to her favorite directors list, "Oh my gosh, in my lineup of favorite grown up geek directors I forgot Peyton Reed who directed Bring It On, and he's here, he's somewhere in the building and I love you too Peyton! Bring It On was one of my favorite movies. You guys have to mob him in the hallway if you see him," she joked. When asked on her intro into the biz, Eliza confessed, "I got my first role, money was good; travel was nice, met a lot of really cool people and kind of stuck with it. So I'm always the worst person to ask, I've been in the business and I see people around me and it definitely takes a real aggressive person, a real tenacious, devoted individual for sure. But at the same time it's so frustrating because it's one of those things where it really is, you have to be in the right place at the right time, 90% of it. You just have to be optimistic and work hard to get it done." When transitioning from such a strong character as Faith to various other roles, Eliza admitted, "I had to stop swinging my limbs so much, and stop taking out my anger and aggression with fighting people. I don't know; everything went a little more internal. I had to compose myself a little more at times and to sit still and think of what I'm saying and listen to the other actors. Not so much the fact that I didn't do that as Faith, but that's just kind of always been something that I have to get into." She recalled a funny incident during her audition of City By the Sea, I remember when I went for my first audition; I was playing this junkie and I got my cigarettes and had the baby and I was kind of all over the place. Michael Caton-Jones directed me when I was eleven years old so I thought we're in together, we're cool, he's gonna hook me up. And after the first take he's like, 'Well that was really, really great, hmm. But everything that you're doing… I want you to stop.' He's all about honesty and all about eyes and you rally have to just communicate and it was a real important lesson for me because that's one of the things I think I struggle with probably just because of my own insecurities, just who I am. Playing Tru has really been cool for me because I feel like she's a character that is in a similar situation that I am in my life," said Eliza, "I feel like we have a lot in common and we're just trying to figure out ourselves, our heads, our emotions."

Eliza Dushku

Fans are never satisfied with only seeing Eliza on the small screen these days so there were many regrets of no new feature films to which Eliza confessed, "I've now just moved back up to Vancouver, I kind of took these last two months after the first season to take it easy and go see some family and friends because I really dropped off the face of the planet when I finally started the show. My family and friends were a little bit annoyed to say the least so I spent the last two months in Boston, I went to Bricksburg, Idaho to hang out with my cowboy cousins. There's like an inner cowgirl in here you guys," she laughed, "I never knew, but I went to this family reunion and I was roping steer with my cousins on the farm, we went to the rodeo and I discovered this whole new person inside myself. So I really just took it easy, now we have the show for the next eight months and then on the next break I'm gonna want to throw a new character on the… I want to play Super girl, that's what I want to play." There was also interest in the upcoming "Tru Calling" DVD and Eliza stated, "We just did a couple commentaries for different episodes with Jon Feldman, Sean Reaves and Zach Galifianakis and I. That dude is so twisted, Zach is out of his mind," she laughed, "I love him though; he's so funny. Remember last year when I was here and someone stood up in the crowd and said, 'I have a question for the guy at the end, are you supposed to be an ugly, old version of the kid next to you?' That was his friend that he planted in the crowd," she recalled, "So I turn and start attacking the guy, 'That's really uncalled for.' And later he showed up backstage and I'm like, 'Hey, you're that jerk,' and Zach's like, 'That's my friend.' But we did a commentary that's really funny and I think it should be ready soon." In closing, Eliza offered what she does best, words from her heart for all the love and support given to her over the years and for her new series from the fans, "There was so much support for the show and it made a difference, and people heard it and that's why we're here again, so thanks guys.
