Episode 12, Season 1 Title: "Expecting" Written by: Howard Gordon Directed by: David Semel Original Air Date: 25 January 2000 Teaser: ![]() Two of Cordelia's new party friends, Serena and Emily, arrive for a night out at La Brea. Wesley becomes tongue-tied and makes a fool of himself by getting the axe stuck in the wall. Angel is surprised to find out that Cordelia has been seeing someone, Wilson Christopher, LA fashion photographer and asks her why she didnÍt tell him. She admits that she was embarrassed and worried about his reaction. Suddenly she collapses behind the desk; she is having a vision. Angel and Wesley chat to the girls to try and distract them. Finally Cordelia recovers and gives them the address where they'll find the demon as she and her friends leave. Wesley and Angel arrive at 23 Cabrillo, Wesley with his axe and crossbow and Angel with his broad sword. Wesley bursts through the front door, where your typical suburban couch potato couple are watching TV, demanding to know where their eggs are. Not too shocked to see a strange Englishman aiming a crossbow in their living room they casually observe as Angel, blocked from entering, notices the demon in a nearby house and informs Wesley that the 'termites' are next door! Wesley apologises to the couple as they leave. Act I: At The La Brea Lounge, Serena is flirting at the bar with her boyfriend Jason, but Emily is bored. Serena comments that Cordelia certainly isnÍt bored and we see her and Wilson sitting on a couch talking. She's recapping her life pre-LA and he's thanking her because he's, 'not hating dating.' She is obviously lapping it up and he knows just what to say! Later they arrive at Cordelia's apartment, Wilson kisses her goodnight and prepares to leave but she invites him in. Wilson compliments her on the apartment and asks her if she lives alone. As she dims the lights they immediately brighten again, 'phantom Dennis' is at work. She then turns on some romantic music; again 'phantom Dennis' changes it to a jaunty Polka. An embarrassed Cordelia blames the odd occurrences on faulty wiring. She enters the kitchen to make some tea and warns Dennis to, "Knock it off!" or she will play Madonna's Evita around the clock. Wilson overhears her and asks to whom she is talking, she teases him that she has a ghost. They kiss, which leads to the bedroom, which leads to the bed. The next morning Cordelia wakes up to find Wilson gone. It's 10:47am and she's late for work and then as she attempts to get out of bed, she also discovers she's very pregnant. Act II: ![]() Angel and Wesley go into the living room as 'phantom Dennis' gives Cordelia the tissues and pulls up the quilt around her. Angel hangs up the phone and informs Wesley that Wilson has vanished, leaving no forwarding number or address and he doesnÍt have a criminal record. They surmise he's a procreatic parasitic demon. Wesley, knowledgeable, offers that humans rarely survive labour and a worried Angel adds those that do wish they hadn't. Wesley thinks that Cordelia may be ready to give birth at any moment and Angel suggests he take her for a prenatal exam while he looks for Wilson. Angel arrives at La Brea and bribes the bartender for information on Wilson. The bartender knows of him and also mentions that Serena handled the girl end of the partying. He asks if Angel is ïthe boyfriendÍ and Angel responds, ñNo, IÍm family.î Cordelia and Wesley are sitting in the doctor's waiting room and another mother-to-be asks Cordelia about the sex of the baby but she is very jumpy and tells the woman to leave her alone. Once inside the exam room, the doctor performs an ultrasound and discovers she's eight months along; he thinks at first she is having twins. Cordelia and Wesley are taken aback at this and Cordelia's less than maternal bliss shocks the doctor as Wesley offers 'hormones' as an excuse. The doctor continues the scan and finds a third heartbeat, then a fifth and sixth. Angel is outside SerenaÍs apartment, he knocks and calls her name, identifying himself and asking if he can come in. Inside only candles light the apartment and Serena is drinking from a bottle. Serena has her back to Angel and as she turns to face him he sees she is also heavily pregnant. Back at the surgery the doctor removes a syringe of embryonic fluid, and hands it to the nurse. She screams and drops it as it shatters the glass and, what appears to be acid, eats away at the floor. Wesley is shocked and suggests finding Angel immediately but Cordelia is more interested in the ïbabiesÍ and wants to know if they look healthy. Act III: ![]() At the same moment, as Wesley is helping Cordelia out of Angel's elevator, she too doubles up and cries out in pain. He helps her over to AngelÍs bed to rest and she is upset as she has sensed that Wesley is afraid of her babies. Wesley attempts to reassure her. She knows there are now seven of them, and as we hear their eerie voices talking to her, she admits that she knows they are not human. Angel arrives and explains to Wesley about Serena, he is also sure that all the guys are involved and there could be more pregnancies. Wesley tells him about the ultrasound. Angel plans to head out to the local gun and cigar club where Wilson and the guys hang out, he asks Wesley to research a way to terminate the birth without hurting Cordelia. As Angel and Wesley walk past the kitchen they are disgusted to see Cordelia gulping down a quart of blood from the fridge, some of it has dribbled down her chin and onto her top. Angel says, "I don't think I ever realized just how disgusting that was. Ugh." She states that she was hungry. At the gun club, Wilson is firing his pistol when Angel appears. Wilson warns him not to sneak up on people as accidents can happen. He guesses that Angel is CordeliaÍs boss and becomes cocky, threatening him with the gun. Angel, unimpressed, grabs Wilson around the throat and subdues him. Realising that Wilson is human, Angel demands to know who is responsible for the pregnancies as the women may die. A fight ensues and Wilson's buddies arrive. Wesley, back at Angels, researches the demon. As he compares the ultrasound with a 16th Century engraving Cordelia surprises him and takes the book. Wesley assures her they will stop what's happening. Suddenly she decks Wesley across the jaw with the large book. He stammers and she hits him again stating, "You're not going to hurt my babies." Act IV: Cordelia is walking through a large, dark factory. Again we hear a multitude of eerie voices coming from the babies as the other girls also appear. The phone rings at Angel's apartment, rousing Wesley. As Angels calls from the pay phone, he is digging bullet slugs out of his stomach with his fingers. Wesley informs him they are after a Haxil demon. Angel tells Wesley that Wilson built a shrine at Mulligan Industrial Park. The demon is telepathic and has a psychic umbilical cord that links all the girls together. Wesley states that neither fire nor decapitation will kill it and it is huge. Angel asks him if he can shoot straight. ![]() Two days later at the office, Angel and Wesley are preparing for CordeliaÍs return. She arrives, happily telling them that a producer of a cracker commercial wants to impregnate her with his demon master seed. Relieved that she is joking, Angel laughs. Cordelia admits she learned a few things. Men are evil, sex is bad and most important that there are two people she can absolutely trust with her life. Wesley starts to tear up, feigning allergies. Angel and Cordelia raise their eyebrows and smile at each other.
