Episode 19, Season 1 Title: "Sanctuary" Written by: Tim Minear and Joss Whedon Directed by: Michael Lange Original Air Date: 2 May 2000 Teaser: Act I: That night the police have arrived at the apartment where Faith was staying. It is now an official crime scene and Kate is collecting her own evidence. Detective Kenter wonders what she's doing there since she wasn't assigned to the case. She heard there was a fugitive and he informs her, 'from Sunnydale.' He's heard that Kate has gone all 'Scully' recently. Always showing up when strange things cross anyone's desk. She clarifies that Scully was the skeptic and Molder was the believer. Does she believe? "Oh, I already believe, that's the problem." Back at the apartment, Angel brings donuts down to Faith but she isn't in bed. As he slowly approaches her, leaning against the wall, he quietly tells her he 'wants to help' but first she must put down the knife. Faith slowly hands over a butcher knife she had in her hand, still clearly battling the emotional demons inside her. Back at Angel's apartment, Faith is sitting on the bed, her mind flashes back to when she accidentally killed Alan Finch. It's getting to her and she starts to pack her bag as Angel walks in. He tells her if she walks out she'll be running for the rest of her life, which will be a pretty short run. It doesn't matter to Faith but he reminds her that she made her choice, she chose the darkness and it has swallowed her up. "So tell me, how'd you like it?" he asks. She turns around and hits him. Immediately feeling the guilt and pain, she asks him to help her. Elsewhere, Wesley is playing darts in a local bar when a dart goes whizzing past his ear. As he turns we see the three men from the Watchers Council, the Elite Assassins. Act II: Back at Angel's, Faith is in the kitchen. Angel walks in as she inquires, "So, how does this work?" He begins to explain that there's no simple answer, that she may be willing to change but the world is not as easily accepting. She might never regain that balance and might be haunted her entire life. She meant the microwave! She realizes that she'll have to apologize to the people she's hurt. Angels tells her she must and it hurts because all the pain is coming back on her. "I've gotta be the first Slayer in history to be sponsored by a Vampire." She wonders how she'll make it up to Buffy, the one person who tried to be her friend and all she did was screw her and her new boyfriend, literally. Angel didn't know and Faith makes her first apology. Wolfram & Hart. Lindsey, Lilah and Lee are having a meeting. They've hired a freelancer to kill Faith. Lilah offers a beverage as a nasty looking little demon who greedily snatches the cup and slurps away to the disgust of the lawyers. Back at the bar, the assassins hand Wesley a syringe with enough sedative to take down a man twice his size or a Slayer. Wesley asks if they intend to take her alive and they assure him they do. The Council wants to rehabilitate her. Wesley has one condition, that 'no harm come to the vampire.' Angel's Apartment. Faith is surfing the TV as Angel takes a quick shower. A news program informs her the police are on her trial and she accidentally brakes a glass. Angel assures her she's safe when suddenly the Demon 'hitman' drops from the ceiling. Angel fights it off as Faith goes to the kitchen for a knife. It has Angel on the defensive but Faith attacks and kills it. When she sees the blood on her hands she drops the knife and starts to break down. Angel coaxes her to the bed, sitting her down and holding her. Just then Buffy walks in. Act III: Faith reaches the upper office but turns and listens at the doorway as Wesley walks in the front. Wolfram & Hart. Lilah walks into the office to inform Lindsey and Lee that their assassin failed. Lindsey decides they are going about this all wrong and he's now knows what to do. At the police station, Lindsey is making Kate an offer but she tells him that she despises him and what his firm stands for. He explains he has information of interest to her. They have a common enemy, as he shows her a picture of Angel. He goes on to say that the law isn't clear on traditional justice with these . . . beings . . . as was the case with those that murdered her father and her own brand of justice. He informs her that Angel is giving 'aid and comfort to a known murderer.' Act IV: Downstairs in the apartment, the assassin Weatherby has pinned Angel and Wesley down. He's disgusted that a Watcher would be working for a vampire, 'its' perversion!' Back on the roof, Buffy explains to Faith that "I need to take the guy out" and for Faith to stay put. Buffy does a flying leap and tackles the assassin. As they fight the helicopter tries to get a steady for a clean shot. Downstairs, Weatherby asks Wesley if his Watchers Oath means nothing to him. Wesley makes a distraction so Angel can get up to the roof and Wesley takes the syringe, using it much like a dart, makes a bulls eye right in Weatherby's neck. Upstairs, Angel has made he way up to the landing. Seeing the helicopter through the skylight, Angel leaps through the glass and onto the runner of the helicopter. He grabs the assassin and sends him falling to the rooftop. Buffy watches from below as Angel flies off informing the pilot to land. Buffy looks around but Faith is gone. As the helicopter lands, the police arrive. Kate approaches Angel and asks where Faith is. When he won't answer she arrests him. At the police station, Wesley and Buffy arrive as Kate is escorting Angel through her office towards the holding cells. Buffy tries to stop them arguing with Angel that he won't take the fall for Faith. Angel stops Buffy as he stares across the room. Faith is there, handcuffed. She stands and walks towards Kate and says, "I'd like to make a confession."
