Episode 6, Season 1 Title: "Sense and Sensitivity" Written by: Tim Minear Directed by: James A.Contner Original Air Date: 9 November 1999 Teaser: ![]() At the precinct Kate is interrogating Spivey for information about Anthony ïlittle TonyÍ Papazian. Other officers from behind a two-way mirror are watching her. Kate is frustrated with the lack of answers, and she starts getting rough. This causes the other cops to rush in, to the rescue. Spivey is not giving them any leads on Papazian but Kate thinks she knows someone who will. Angel is fighting a monster in the sewers. It has many tentacles and luminous green blood. He defeats it, leaving Cordelia and Doyle to clean up the mess. When he tells them to make sure that they finish it off properly this time, Cordelia complains about AngelÍs insensitivity. She bemoans Angel as ïcluelessÍ while one of the tentacles is trying to strangle Doyle in the background. Act I: ![]() Later Doyle is in the office, searching for leads on the computer. Angel attempts to thank Cordelia for helping with the coronerÍs reports, and ends up sounding ïlameÍ. Cordelia has discovered that a lot of bodies and parts have washed up on the shore. Angel tells Doyle to make a tidal flow chart, which may lead them to PapazianÍs favourite dumping ground. At the precinct, Kate tells her dad she is to give a speech, at his retirement send off. He seems unmoved by this, and we sense some tension between father and daughter. Angel calls Kate from the docks, informing her that he has found Papazian. She tells him to leave. When he starts to go, he notices a boat arriving, presumably to pick up Papazian. Angel, wearing a Hawaiian shirt and a hat, approaches Papazian and his bodyguard. He pretends to be a tourist, who thinks the approaching boat is for a trip. The thugs attack Angel while Papazian flees the scene. Kate arrives in time to make the arrest, but she is furious with Angel for getting involved. Back at the precinct, Papazian makes a phone call to his lawyers, Wolfram and Hart. The attorney tells him that the thorn in his side, namely Kate, is on the way to being removed - permanently. We see the attorney printing out KateÍs police file. Act II: ![]() Angel is back at the office with Cordelia worrying that the case is not closed. After Doyle walks in and notices CordeliaÍs new shoes, she becomes upset because Angel did not. Kate arrives at the Blue Bar, to congratulations all around, for the Papazian arrest. Her father, Trevor, buys her a drink but tells her the case will not stick. KateÍs fellow detective Harlan tells Kate that everyone has to undergo ïsensitivity trainingÍ, due to KateÍs treatment of Papazian. Introducing the class is Allen Lloyd, who informs the officers they will experience the full range of their emotions. They must all hold the ïTalking StickÍ. Whoever is holding the stick can speak freely with no condemnation from others. When one of the other officers has the stick, Kate is sarcastic. This backfires when she gets the stick to hold. Allen asks Kate if fear prompted the sarcasm. Angel and Doyle visit an informant, who tells them that Papazian is going to kill Kate. Angel arrives at the precinct, to warn her of the contract on her head. Kate expresses concern over PapazianÍs anger, which leads Angel to ask if Kate is okay. She, however, only wants to apologize for her behaviour, and she invites him to her dadÍs retirement party. We then see a conversation between Allen Lloyd and Wolfram & Hart, which informs us that the police training is going as planned. Act III: ![]() Cordelia arrives at the office in the middle of the night following AngelÍs call. She enters, moaning about working for a ïvampƒventriloquistÍ. The word stumble follows Cordelia spotting Kate sitting in a chair. As Angel questions Kate about the training, Cordelia wonders if she is drunk. Doyle explains it is an emotional high. Kate notices the crush that Doyle has on Cordelia, as Angel telephones the number, which is on the sensitivity flyer that Kate received. This gives him AllenÍs address, and he decides to investigate. Kate decides she needs to find her father, and when Cordelia and Doyle try to stop her, she points her gun at them, and leaves. Within AllenÍs mansion, Angel is searching the rooms. Just as he discovers a ceremonial room, Allen finds Angel. Allen tells Angel that anger leads to fear, but with Angel, anger leads to vamp face! A fight ensues with Allen trying to hit Angel with the talking stick, but when Angel grabs it, the stick seems to have no effect. ![]() Kate arrives at the station to find chaos all over the streets, as the officers try to emotionally reason with the criminals. Angel arrives to find Cordelia and Doyle outside the precinct. They are both anxious because Kate escaped, but Angel asks them if they need a hug. It appears the stick did work after all. Act IV: ![]() Inside the station, the chaos continues as one of the officers tells Kate that he loves her. Papazian manages to find the guns, and searches for Kate to kill her. Doyle, Angel, and Cordelia break in through a basement window, much to AngelÍs dismay. Papazian comes into KateÍs room, aiming a gun at her, just as Angel arrives. At first Angel tries to talk Papazian out of killing Kate, but eventually gives up and knocks him out. Kate and Angel hug each other. The next day Papazian is on the telephone to his lawyer. He wants out of jail, but due to his escapades Wolfram & Hart no longer wish to have him as a client. They see him as a liability, and they have more pressing concerns; namely Angel. When Angel returns to the precinct, he finds an apologetic, embarrassed Kate. She tells him that the Blue Bar is under investigation by internal affairs. They think that the retirement punch was spiked. Angel leaves and KateÍs dad walks in. He tells her she embarrassed him by her public speech, but he will forget she ever said anything. He walks away, leaving Kate sitting sadly at her desk, as we see Angel standing in the corridor. Angel turns away, leaving, before Kate can realise he is still there.
