Part 1:
"God, it is cold out there." Xander Harris stated as he came into Giles apartment.
"It's February, Xander, it's suppose to be cold." Angel replied.
"Not in Southern California!" Xander exclaimed. "Besides who asked you Dead Boy. You could run around naked in a foot of snow and it wouldn't bother you."
Both Angel and Xander turned toward the couch when they heard Buffy start to giggle.
"Sorry, mental picture." She blushed. Angel smiled and took a seat next to her. Xander groaned and took a seat next to Anya, and promptly began to make out with her.
Buffy and Angel just rolled their eyes and started to talk softly, until the front door opened and Willow entered the apartment followed closed by Spike and Giles. The look on Giles face told Buffy that there was something wrong.
"What's wrong?"
Giles just looked over at Spike and Willow. "Tell them." He ordered.
"I...um...I..." Willow looked over at Spike.
"It's okay luv."
"I'mgoingtohaveababy." Willow spit it out as one word.
"What!" Xander exclaimed.
"Congratulations Wills, Spike." Angel smiled, knowing Xander didn't know a thing about the red head's relationship with the blonde vampire.
"Wait a minuet, Dead Boy Jr. and...and Willow?!"
"You didn't know?" Anya asked looking at her boyfriend. "You can't be that blind."
Xander looked from his girlfriend to Willow, then over to Spike. "But how can you love that...that monster. Wills, he has no soul so how can..."
"Xander!" Buffy shouted. She noticed that Willow on the verge of tears. Buffy quickly moved to her best friend's side and embraced her. Buffy could hear Spike growling from beside them and a second deeper growl from behind that she knew had to be Angel.
"I'd leave now before this gets worse Xander." Buffy warned.
Xander glared one more time at Spike before leaving in a huff. Anya stood up smiled gently at Willow before leaving with Xander.
"I'm going to rip that bleedn sod apart." Spike grumbled.
"Then your head will explode." Angel commented, then a sadistic smile, remnant of Angelus, crossed his face. "You can hold him down while I'll beat him."
"Angel." Buffy scolded.
"He's just going to have to get used to it, as am I. But I see no reason for him to act the way he has." Giles put in. "I need to do some research."
**********
5 Month Later:
"Buffy..."
She groaned and pulled the covers closer around her. "Go away."
"Buffy, you have to get up."
"No I don't." She finally pulled the covers up over her head. Angel laughed, pulling the covers away from her and crawled in next to her. "You really have to get up baby."
"No, Angel, if I get up I'm going to get sick, so if I stay in bed I won't have to puke my guts out." She groaned and buried her face into his chest.
"Which is why Willow is going to take you to the doctor." He smoothed down her golden hair.
"NO! No doctors, Angel. I hate doctors, Angel."
"I know, but we have to figure out what's wrong with you."
She grumbled incoherently for a few more minutes and then agreed reluctantly.
***********
"Wills, why are we at you house? I thought you were going to take me to the doctor." Buffy asked as she got out of the car.
Willow giggled. "I just told Angel that so he wouldn't ask any questions."
"Questions about what?" Buffy looked over at her friend.
Willow smiled and tossed Buffy a plain brown paper sack. Buffy opened it and closed it again quickly.
"Willow." Buffy grumbled.
"Buffy," Willow sighed. "I'm talking from experience here." She reminded the Slayer, placing a hand on her slightly rounded stomach.
Buffy looked at her best friend and then at the sack she held in her hand. "Okay."
Willow smiled and let them into the empty house.
************
Angel leaned casually against the large tomb stone, waiting for Buffy to show up for patrol. He smiled when he saw her come around the corner with a big smile on her face. He pulled her to him and kissed her soundly.
"Hi." She said a bit breathlessly.
"Hi," He responded. "How did the doctor go?"
Buffy's smile got wider and pushed away from him. "Don't know. I didn't go."
"What? Buffy!" He pushed away from the tomb stone and crossed his arms over his chest. "Buffy, what if something is really wrong?"
She looked at him and started to giggle. "You should see your face right about now."
"Buffy this isn't funny."
"I think it is, and I'm sure our baby will think so too." She paused. "Well at least when he or she gets older."
"What?"
Buffy slowly walked over to him and placed a hand on his chest. "We're going to have a baby." She told him softly.
"Are you sure?" He asked, his eyes meeting hers. His voice laced with hope.
"Yeah, about 98.9% sure. I took two of the home tests. I didn't really trust the one I took with Willow, so I took another one when I got home. It came out positive too." She rested her other hand on his chest. "I did make an appointment to see Willow's OB tomorrow night."
"Can I go with you?"
Buffy smiled up at him. "I was hoping you would want to."
"Why wouldn't I. We're going to have a baby." He rested his forehead against hers. "A baby." He breathed, a grin spreading over his face. He suddenly picked her up and spun her around.
"Angel." Buffy laughed, tightening her hold around his neck.
Angel laughed and set her down, capturing her mouth with his. He kissed her until she was breathless.
"Let's go home. I want to celebrate." He told her. She nodded and let him lead her back to the mansion
Part 2:
Angel gently laid his head down on Buffy's stomach. He took an unneeded breath when he faintly heard the baby's heart beat. The reality of the whole situation had yet to truly settle in, causing Angel to remain in a state of wonder. He turned his head slightly and started to speak softly to the growing life.
Buffy sighed and ran her hand through his hair. She never imagined that she would be this happy. She tried to listen to what Angel was telling the baby but he was talking in Gaelic and couldn't understand. She filed that away for future reference. She thought back over the past few day and the events surrounding them. Her and Angel had told the rest of the gang about the baby right after they had seen the OB. And much to both of their surprise, everyone was expecting it.
Xander made his peace with Angel and Spike, even though they were still far from becoming best of buds.
"Angel?"
"Hmmm?" He turned and looked at her. His ear still resting on her belly.
"What does she sound like?" She traced the lines of his jaw.
"She?" He asked in confusion.
"The baby."
He smiled and sat up so that his face face was inches from hers. "Beautiful." He placed a soft kiss on her lips, then one on her belly.
Their peaceful moment was disturbed by the sound of a door slamming and Spike's cursing. Buffy and Angel looked at each other and slipped out of bed to see what was going on.
"Willow, Luv, come on let me back in. I'm sorry, baby, please." Spike pounded on the door to their bedroom.
"NO!" Willow's muffled voice shouted.
"Please Pet, I love you." Spike leaned his head against the door, nearly falling on his face when the door opened up. A pillow and blanket came flying out of the open door before it was slammed shut again.
"Bloody hell." He muttered.
"What did you do now, Spike?" Buffy asked with a smirk.
"He was being insensitive." Willow called through the door.
"All I did was tell her that I didn't like the dress she just bought, I didn't think it was flattering." He turned toward the door and yelled. "I wasn't being insensitive I was being honest."
Angel laughed. "Spike you've gotta remember that honesty isn't always the best policy right now."
Buffy turned on him. "So if I bought something that made me look fat, you wouldn't tell me because I'm pregnant?"
"Buffy that's not what I meant."
"Sure as hell sounded like it." She fumed. "You can just stay out here with Spike." She yelled slamming the door to her and Angel's bedroom.
Angel groaned and looked over to a smirking Spike.
"I'll share the blanket with you Mate."
Angel groaned again and head towards the living room and the couch.
Part 3:
Angel sighed and rubbed his eyes. "I think I'm going to find the person who wrote these instructions and rip their throat out."
Pices of what would be a crib were scattered about the room, in which Angel sat in the middle of, frustrated and ready to kill something. He heard Spike snicker from the other side of the room. Angel turned and glared at the blonde vampire, but ended up laughing instead. Spike looked like he had been in a fight with some sort of monster that spued a pale green goo.
"Don't laugh you bloody sod. It's not as easy as it looks." He said crossing his arms.
Angel finally stopped laughing and sighed. "We're never going to get this done."
Spike plopped down across from Angel, snatching the instructions away from him. He looked at the paper from every angle he could before tossing it back on top of the pieces.
"Yeah well at least you still have a few more months. Willow looks like she could pop at any moment."
"Better not let Willow hear that or you'll be sleeping on the couch again." Xander said as he wondered back into the room.
"Why are you hear again?" Spike asked.
"Buffy and Willow said you guys needed some help."
"And you've been downstairs the whole time." Spike snorted.
"Hey I was keeping Wills and Buffy company." Xander defended.
"Xander you play those video games," Angel shoved the crib instrutions into the boy's hands. "See if you can figure this out."
"Yeah, sure this is a piece of cake."
Angel smiled. "Good, you can put it together." He stood up and walked out of the room, the sound of Spike's laughter followed him all the way down the hall
Part 4:
Willow groaned silently as she struggled to get out of bed. Spike slept soundly next to her. She envied him. She hadn't had a decent night's sleep in months. She sighed and waddled to the adjoing bathroom. She sighed again when she caught sight of herself in the bathroom mirror. She thought she looked hiddious, but Spike swore up and down that she looked amazing.
Willow leaned heavily against the sink as a sudden wave of pain washed through her and something wet trickled down her legs. When it was over she was standing in a small pool of warm translucent liquid. She quickly cleaned up and totled back into the bedroom. She sat down next to the sleeping Spike and shook him gently.
"Spike."
Spike slowly opened his eyes. "Willow, what's wrong?"
"The baby decided that it's time to make it's appearance." She said with a smile.
"What?" He asked waking up a little more.
"My water just broke."
Willow knew that vampires had extremely quick reflexes, but she didn't think she'd ever see anything move as fast as Spike did getting out of bed. He had her bag by the door and a dress in his hand with in seconds.
"You put this on and I'll go wake the Poof and the Slayer." Spike shoved the dress into Willow's hands and was out the door before she could say anything.
************
Angel was the first to wake at the insistent pounding on his bedroom door. He groaned, rolling over and padding his way to the door. He swung the door open to find a half dressed Spike standing behind it.
"What?"
"Willow'swaterbroke. I'mgoingtotakehertothehospital." Spike rushed out. Angel barely caught all of it. In fact Spike was half way back down the hall before he realized what he had said.
"Spike."
The blonde vampire turned around quickly.
"You might want to get dressed first." Angel smirked and headed back into the bedroom to wake Buffy.
**********
"Spike will you stop that!" Willow commandedd from her bed. "You're making me dizzy with all that pacing."
Spike stopped his pacing and cursed silently. Buffy and Angel laughed from their chairs on the other side of the room. Spike swiftly turned and glared at him.
"Don't expect any sympathy when you're going through the same thing in four months." The blonde vampire snarled.
"You won't have to do that Spike." Buffy replied holding back the giggles. "How are you doing Wills?"
"I'm a little uncomfortable," Willow replied with a small smile. "The drugs really helped."
As soon as Willow said that the doctor walked in to check on Willow, signalling for Buffy and Angel to leave.
***************
"Shouldn't this be over by now." Xander asked as he paced the hospital waiting room.
"Xander these things take a while." Giles replied.
"Sit down Xander you're starting to remind me of Spike." Buffy commented, placing her head on Angel's shoulder.
"Speaking of which." Angel replied watching Spike hurry down the hallway.
"SO?!"
Spike smiled. "I have a son."
"And Willow?"
"Oh, she's fine, I have a son."
"I think his ego just doubled in size." Buffy murmured to Angel.
"Can we see them?" Angel asked.
"Yeah follow me." Spike said and lead them down the long hallway to a large viewing window. "That one." He told them pointing to the small bundle wrapped in a pale blue blanket.
"I know I'm going to regret telling you this, Spike, but he looks exactly just like you." Xander said looking at the sleeping bundle.
"I know isn't he perfect." Spike said swelling with pride.
****************
"Hi." Willow smiled sleepily at Buffy as she entered the room.
"Hey." Buffy smiled back.
"Have you seen him yet?"
"He's beautiful Wills." Buffy told her, taking a seat next to her.
"He looks like Spike." Willow murmured.
"Yeah he does. Let's just hope he doesn't act like him." Both girls giggled. "What have you named him? Spike wouldn't tell us."
"That's because Spike still needs to talk to Angel about his middle name. We've agreed on Dante for his first name, but Spike wants to use Angelus as his middle. I don't know because, well Angel might feel guilty more."
Buffy smiled at her friends rambling. "I think he'll agree to it Wills." Buffy said confidently.
"I hope so. It'll make Spike happy." Willow replied as they settled into a comfortable silence.
"You know Wills," Buffy started breaking the silence. "I think this is the first enjoyable Halloween we've had."
Part 5:
"No!" Buffy stated vehemently as she pushed herself out of the car. "It's just going to have to stay in, cause I am not going through what that lady whent through on the video."
Angel fought extreamly hard to hold back the laughter at his very pregnant girlfriend. The last place he wanted to end up tonight was on the couch.
"Buffy...just think that all the pain is going to be worth it. I mean after it's all over we're going to have a beautiful new life that's apart of both of us."
Angel ment for his words to comfort Buffy, not to make her cry. But here she was, fat tears streaming down her face. Angel sighed and pulled her into his arms, holding her as close as he could considering her large swollen stomach. He smiled when he felt the baby move.
"Angel?"
"Hmmm?'
"The baby's hungry."
Angel laughed. "What's it hungry for?"
"Doritos, ice cream and Hershy's surp." Buffy smiled up at him, the tears already gone.
"Okay, lets go see if we have those things in the kitchen." Angel smiled and led her inside.
************
Angel watched with intrest as Buffy crushed the the nacho cheese flavored Doritos into a large bowl of vanilla ice cream, then poured the Hershy's surp over it. Buffy giggled as she took a large bite.
"Do you want some?" Buffy asked holding out a spoonful.
"Um...no." Angel replied with a grin.
Buffy shrugged, putting the spoonful into her mouth. She shifted on the stool, trying to get comfortable. Her back had been killing her since early that morning, and getting comfy had been a growing nightmare since then. She quickly finished her snack and let Angel help her up.
Angel sat on the edge of the bed and watched Buffy change into her night clothes.
"Angel, quit staring at me. I look like a whale."
"No you don't. You look beautiful."
"I don't feel like it." She sighed and sat down between his legs as he started to rub her shoulders.
"Let's go to bed." He whispered into her ear.
She nodded as she crawled up the bed and slid in between the sheets.
Part 6:
Thunder rolled over the mansion, nearly shaking the large stone eddifce. It had to be the worse storm Sunnydale had seen in centuries. The power had been down for hours and with the way the thunder and lighting were playing across the sky, the hopes of it coming on any time soon was far in furture.
Angel stood infront of the window watching the storm rage on. The thunder drowned out the sound of soft voices of the rest of the Scoby gang that because of the weather were forced to crash at the mansion. Angel turned slightly so he could see the motly assortment of friends. Xander was sitting in the large overstuffed chair with Anya on his lap. Giles sat on the harth watching the fire. Angel smiled when he turned his gaze to the couch. Spike was lying on the couch with Willow curled up at his side and Dante was asleep on his chest.
"What are you doing?" Buffy asked as she came up behind him.
"Just watching our family." Angel smiled and sat down on the window ledge. He pulled her toward him, resting his head on her swollen stomach. "How are you feeling?"
"My back is hurting," She sighed running a hand through his soft thick hair.
"Like it has been?" He turned and looked at her.
"Sort of, it's been a little more intense today."
Angel sighed, placing a soft kiss on her rounded belly. "It's late, let's head upstairs."
He took her hand and led her up the steps, with a small goodnight to the rest. As they reached the top of the steps, Buffy suddenly doubled over in pain. Angel was quickly at her side holding her stedy.
"Buffy, what's wrong?"
"The baby..." She grunted.
"Is it a contraction?"
Buffy nodded, then seemed to relax as it passed. Angel let her catch her breath. He wrapped an arm around her and eased her toward their bedroom, but before they could get there she groaned loudly in pain again. With out a thought Angel swept her up into his arms and carried her to the bed.
"What's going on?" Spike's voice came from the doorway.
"She's gone into labor." Angel replied trying not to let the fear be evident in his voice. He crossed back across the room to stand next to Spike.
"We're not going to be able to get her to the hospital." Spike told his sire.
"Yeah I know. I don't know what we're going to do." Angel ran a hand through his hair.
"I can deliver the baby."
Both vampires turned to look Anya with unbelieving looks.
"What? I was a mid wife before I was a vengance demon, and it's something you really don't forget." She crossed her arms over her chest. "Do you want me to help or not."
"Yes." Angel replied simply.
"Ok then. I'm going to need some towls, a small bowl of warm water, string and Spike send Willow up. I'm going to need her help." She ordered them as she pushed them out the door.
*************
Angel wiped the sweat off Buffy's forehead and gripped hold of her hand as another contraction ripped through her body.
"Angel I can't do this." Buffy groaned and burried her face into his chest.
"Yes you can. I know you can." He stroked her damp hair.
"Ok Buffy, one more push and your baby should be here." Anya said smiling.
Angel winced a little as she squeezed down on his hand as she pushed. She colapsed back against his brod chest, a loud cry filled the room.
"Buffy, you've got a girl." Willow grined taking the squrming bundle from Anya and placed it on Buffy's chest.
They quickly covered the baby with a blanket as it settled down on her mother's chest. Angel reached out with shakey fingers and touched the tuft of soft brown hair. He ran a finger over her small arms. When he reached her fist, her little fingers stretched and wrapped around his finger.
He was in total awe of this life that he had helped create. "Welcome to the world Emma Aine Summers."
Part 7:
Angel slowly rounded the corner of the living room. A small smile tugged at the corner of his mouth as he heard the giggling coming from behind the couch. He was on babysitting duty while Buffy, Willow and Spike were off at Giles doing research on lastest evil to crawl out of the Hellmouth. A nasty demon that wanted to damn the entire human race, and to do that he needed the blood of a slayer and the very thing she was destined to destroy. There was absoultly no doubt in anyone's mind that Buffy and Angel were his primary targets. They were slowly running out of options on what to do.
The demon seemed impossible to kill.
He shook his head to rid it of the dark thoughts as he heard the giggles again. Angel sliped around the long couch, surprising the dark haired girl hiding behind it. Emma let out a squeal of giggles as Angel hoisted her over his shoulder, her feet lightly kicking his back in protest.
"Where's your partner in crime?" Angel asked.
"Daddy he's hiding, you've gotta find him." Emma informed her father matter of factly.
"Right." Angel sighed. The only problem with playing this game with Dante, was the boy never could sit still for more than five minutes before he'd have to move again, so he would never stay in the same hiding spot he started out in, which usually resulted in the longest game of hide and seek ever played. This time he was in luck. He saw movement out of the corner of his eye and swiftly grabbed the boy by the back of his shirt.
"Gotcha."
Angel put Emma down and had to hide the laughter as he watched Dante slump in a chair, pouting because he lost. The boy was defently Spike's son.
"Okay let's eat dinner." Angel announced.
"Pizza?" They both asked.
"Yeah, okay."
********
Angel stared into the dark room that his daughter was sleeping in. He watched as he chest rose and fell with deep even breaths as she slept. He wanted to memorize the peaceful look she had.
"What's he going to tell her?" Angel asked Buffy quietly. He hadn't heard her come into the room, he had felt her. Her grief was as heavy as his was and the two combind made it almost plyable. The research had failed them and now it was time to do the only thing they could think of. Run. Draw the demon as far away from the Hellmouth as they could. They would take their own lives if had to come to that but that was the extrem. They were leaving Emma behind, protecting her from the horrors of not knowing whether or not you're going to live to see the next day.
"Giles said he would tell her what we told him to tell her." Angel heard Buffy take a deep ragged breath. "That we died saving humanity."
They both knew that sometime soon that little white lie was going to become fact.
"She'll have a mother and father, Angel. It just won't be us."
Angel knew he should feel a little at easy that Giles and Olivia had agreed to raise Emma, but he couldn't shake his sense to protect his family.
He turned away from his sleeping daughter when he heard the cough coming from the door. Spike stood in the doorway his hands stuffed in his pockets.
"The cab's here."
Angel nodded, watching Spike leave. Buffy kissed Emma on the forhead then kissed Angel as she walked out of the room to retrieve her bags. Angel slowly walked over to the tiny bed. He sat down carefully, not wanting to wake Emma. It didn't work, her eyes fluttered open so that her deep brown eyes met Angel's.
"Hi." He whispered softly, brushing a few stray hairs out of her face.
Emma smiled sleepily and sunggled into her fathers touch. "I love you, daddy."
"I love you too, baby."
He handed her, her stuffed cat that had fallen to the floor. Emma placed it in the crook of her arm, lovingly stroking it's already warm fur. She placed a kiss on the top of it's head and nestled deeper under her covers.
"Daddy's going to kept us safe." She whispered to the stuffed animal. "Right Daddy?"
"Always baby." Angel replied choking back tears.
"Stay with me until I go to sleep?"
"Yeah." Angel leaned down and kissed her on the forehead as she closed her eyes and drifted back into a peaceful sleep.
