"Cordelia, this is incredible," whispered Buffy as she peered out the tinted windows of the limo. "I'm so nervous."

"You'll be fine," assured Angel, taking one of her shaky hands in his own. "It's an honor to be nominated, even if you don't win."

Cordy scoffed, smoothing out her skirt as she moved from Doyle's arms. "That's just what the losers say. And she's going to win."

Buffy shook her head at her friend's obvious faith, wondering how she couldn't be nervous about her own nomination. Soulmate had entered theaters in November of the past year, staying number one for over a month. It had subsequently led to numerous Oscar nods, that had stunned her most of all. She had never imagined that the writing of her and Angel's love story would come to so much. First it was number one on the New York Times Bestsellers, then it was made into a very popular movie, and had been nominated for several awards. It had been nominated for 6 in fact: Picture, Director, Actor and Actress, Special Effects, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Which meant that she was to attend. Vaguely she tried to compare facing the mayor at Graduation to her nervousness now.

The limo rolled to a stop at the foot of the wide red carpet, already crowded with people talking to reporters and pausing to have their pictures taken, and the door opened. Angel stepped out first, taking her hand and helping her out. They stepped aside as Doyle and Cordelia exited the car then, as the crowd cheered in response to her appearance.

Buffy kept close to Angel as they followed their more famous friends down the carpet, pausing as obligatory interviews were given, more often in Cordelia's case than her own. Soon, they were facing the formidable Joan Rivers, who Buffy and Willow had always been annoyed with when watching the Oscars in their youth. The older fashion guhru targeted Cordelia mainly.

"Cordelia, you look as terrific as you usually do," she said, commenting on the dark green sheath that draped elegantly over the actresses figure.

Cordelia beamed. "Donna Karan was amazing with this dress."

"Are you nervous about your nomination? You've been through this before, do you think it gets easier?"

"No, I don't. And I am nervous. This movie meant a lot to me when I made it; one of my best friends was the writer, so I wanted to do a good job for her. I know how much the story means to her."

Joan turned to Buffy then, smiling widely. "Buffy?" Buffy nodded in response, keeping hold on Angel's hand. "Did you think that your book would ever be this huge?"

"I never imagined it would be. Everyone has been so amazing."

"And who's this handsome man?"

Buffy's face glowed, and she looked up at Angel. "My husband. Angel."

"He certainly is. And who are you wearing?"

"We're both in Calvin Klein," replied Buffy, stepping back so that Joan could see her dress.

"Good luck to both of you tonight."

Several hours later.

The camera swept over the audience before cutting to shots of the five nominees. Matt Damon broke the seal on the envelope, even as he spoke. "And the Oscar goes to," he paused, a wide grin coming into place on his face, "Buffy Summers for Soulmate!"

Buffy sat in shock, even as those around her, the whole audience, in fact, began to clap and cheer. Angel pulled her to her feet, giving her a warm embrace as Doyle and Cordelia stood along with her, smiling widely for her. On autopilot, she made her way up the aisle, carefully taking the steps in the long, simple black creation. Matt embraced her as he handed over the small gold statue.

Tears were threatening to fall as she stood in front of the microphone. "Oh my, I didn't honestly think that this would happen. I went into this knowing that it was a story that should be told. I never expected any of this. I want to thank everyone who as made this possible. The fans of course, who it was made for; DreamWorks for allowing me to meddle as much as I could to keep the story true. Mira, thanks for taking the chance on a lowly college student. To my own personal Scooby Gang, Lanie, Willow, Oz, Xander, Anya and Doyle, and Amy and William too, who I don't know how they survived years of knowing the true me. Cordelia, thanks for your truth, and for standing by us. My mom, who never knew what would happen when she had me, I love you. And Giles, you've been there for me through everything, thank you." She paused, her voice wavering with emotion. "And to my husband Angel. My love, my inspiration. Your love means so much to me. You are my true soulmate. None of this means anything without you. Thank you."

The music cued on, and Buffy allowed herself to be led off the stage by Matt. The award was heavy in her hand, and backstage, there were so many people crowding, wishing her congratulations. Sighing, she allowed herself to be brought to the first in the series of interviews that would be taking place.

Standing on the main platform for the group interview, Buffy tried not to be blinded by the bright lights, or shrink into the shadows as her instincts told her to do. Years of hiding a secret identity that could get you killed couldn't be quieted.

"Buffy, did you ever expect your book would go this big?"'

Buffy shook her head, silver stake earrings hitting the column of her neck. "This has been an incredible experience. I began writing because I enjoyed it, and was lucky enough to find people who enjoyed to read my stuff. Soulmate has been a huge rush."

"How about the movie?"

"Did I expect it to do so well? Not really. Everyone hopes their stories will, but I just figured it would go unnoticed, maybe get a small following from my readers. It was when Cordy signed on to do it that I thought it might do better."

"You worked on this movie from its conception. Was there a reason that you wanted to be so involved?"

Buffy shifted the Oscar in her hands. "If you're trying to find out if I was doing it for the money, no I wasn't. I hold the story close to my heart, the characters aren't just fiction to me. I just wanted to make sure the movie did the story justice."

"A lot of authors write what they know. Was this the case with you? People have been commenting on how much Charisma's life reflects Cordelia Chase's past."

"You mean other than the mystical forces, demons, spells and hunters?" grinned Buffy. "Yup. My characters seemed to take on the traits of my closest friends. Some less than others."

"What about your relationship with your husband?"

"Angel and I suffered from a tragic romance early on. So a little of that and us are in Janna and David."

"Do you have any future plans?"

"Well, writing of course. And long awaited family time."

"A final question. Who is the PTB? You've dedicated all your books to the person, saying 'To the PTB, for the hand in destiny.'"

"PTB is the Powers That Be."

"As in the unknown force written in your series?"

"More or less. Someone has got to be directing destiny. I'm just grateful that mine has turned out this way." Lifting the statue slightly to the reporters, she smiled. "Thank you."
