Summary: Set fourth season. Spoilers for Enemies. Angel didn't want Faith, did he? Plus a special surprise.
Buffy looked adoringly into her lover's eyes. He was so beautiful when he slept. The perfect sculpture of an angel. She shifted so she could kiss him on his cheek and he instinctively wrapped his arms around her, bring her closer than she already was. Buffy smiled at his actions. She looked down at her left hand. They were engaged! They were going to be married! She couldn't be happier. She shifted closer to Angel, causing him to wake up. "Mmm. Good morning." Angel said to Buffy kissing her on the head.
"Morning, sweetie. Sleep well?" Buffy asked Angel.
"I would have, if someone hadn't kept me all night." He smiled at her, bidding her to tease him back.
"Well, if I remember correctly, it was someone's idea to use the ice." she played along.
"Oh you know you loved it."
"Oh yeah. Can't wait to do it again." She smiled happily. "I'll be right back, I need something to drink. Want?"
"No thanks." Angel yawned. Buffy kissed him on his nose and slipped out of the bed.
Buffy put on her robe and walked quietly down the stairs. She yawned as she entered the kitchen. As she was reaching for the handle to the fridge, something caught her eye. On it was a letter addressed to her. Thinking it was from Angel, she smiled as she opened it. She gasped when she read it. Written on the white paper inside was:
Buffy,
You think you have it all, don't you? You think you're so happy with Angel. Well, let me tell you something, honey. I've had one thing from him you've never had. Pure raw lust. Something, no matter how many times you sleep with him, you'll ever experience.
Be seeing you, big sister.
Faith
Buffy looked wide eyed in horror at the note. Her and Angel couldn't have. There was no way it was possible. Not even for a minute. Frantically, Buffy ran upstairs to Angel who was still lying in bed. She launched on the bed into his arms, crying hysterically.
"Buffy, honey, what's wrong?" Angel asked her worried.
"It's not true. It's not true." Buffy cried into his chest repeatedly.
"What's not true? Buffy, talk to me." Angel saw the piece of paper clutched firmly in her hand. He withdrew it and read it. The same horror that had been in Buffy just moments ago, resided in Angel. "Oh Buffy, it's not true. You know there is no way I could touch her like that. You know it."
Buffy raised her head from his chest and scooted away from him so they were no longer touching. Her body screamed from it. But she had to know. "But you could kiss her. You did that. What's one more step?"
Angel tried to touch her cheek, but she bolted out of bed. Sighing, he said to her, "Buffy, I promise. I would never ever betray you like that. I could never sleep with Faith."
"Promise?"
"Cross my heart, hope to die. Again." He told her with a smile.
Buffy was about to get back in bed when a question formed in her mind. "Angel, did you lust after Faith?"
Angel looked at her and said nothing. He didn't know why, but he couldn't. He never lusted Faith. God, he hated her, and the sight of her made him want to lose everything he had ever eaten.
Buffy once again became frantic. "You did! You wanted her! How can you sit here and say you would never sleep with her, when you wanted her."
"I never wanted her, Buffy! Angelus wanted her. I wanted nothing to do with her whatsoever. The one I want is you. And only you. You know that."
"Do I? I'm not sure I even know you anymore Angel." Buffy hurriedly got dressed and ran out of the house.
Angel rubbed his hand over his face. When he looked up, he saw the only person that could make this worse.
"Hello, Whistler."
*~*
Buffy ran as fast as she could. She had to get away. Get away from Angel and the pain it cause her to think he actually wanted Faith. She felt the hot tears as they ran down her cheeks. She didn't bother wiping them off, knowing that more would fall in their place. Buffy felt like she was on fire. Her heart pounded in her chest, her muscles ached, and her breathing quickened. I'm going to die. I'm going to die and it's all because of Faith She told herself.
Buffy ran up the stairs to the entrance to Willow's dorm room. Buffy sniffled and then answered, "Faith. Note. Angel. Lust. Left. Came here." "What? Buffy, I don't understand." Buffy took a deep breath and told her the story. When she was done, she had once again began crying. "He lusted after Faith, Willow! How could he betray me like this?" "Betray? Let me tell you about betrayal. Betrayal is caring for someone then to see them naked in the morning with someone else. Betrayal is trusting your boyfriend and then he goes off with the first Fem-wolf he can find. That's betrayal, I tell you. You-" "Willow! Stop! God, this happened four months ago! Get over it! Every time I talk to you, you go on and on about how Oz and Veruca shamed you. Everything we talk about turns into you. I've put up with it for four months, and I'm sorry, but I can't do it anymore." "I don't know what you're talking about, Buffy. I don't turn everything into an Oz and Veruca thing." "Yes you do. I come in here telling you about Angel and you go off. It's the same thing every time. I'm sorry, I really am, that Oz left, but that doesn't give you a right to be so self involved in yourself and allow you to give mind to no one but yourself. I need to leave. Good bye." Willow watched as Buffy stormed out of the room. She continued to stare at the door when it was shut. Did she really talk about Oz and Veruca that much? Nah, it couldn't be possible. She went back to typing on her computer. *~* "Whistler, will you please tell me what the hell you're doing here?" The demon had only been there five minutes and already Angel was ready to kill him. "Angel, man. Relax. I think you're old age is getting to you. You've become somewhat of a crank nowadays." "Whistler, don't start with me. Not today." Angel warned the demon through gritted teeth. "Who got your fangs stuck in a vein?" At this Angel launched at Whistler. He grabbed the demon by the throat and pushed him into the wall. Without noticing, Angel changed into his demonic mask. "Let me tell you why, as you would say, I have my fangs stuck in a vein." Angel spat at him. He tightened his hold on Whistler's neck and continued, "Buffy thinks I actually lusted Faith, so right now, I'm not in a very good mood. Now, if you want to see what I can do with my soul, then by all means, continue to joke with me. But if you want to keep you heart inside your chest, then tell me what the hell you're doing here." "Alright. Alright. Just put me down will ya?" Angel put him down and Whistler straightened himself. "I swear, man, after I pull you off the streets, this is how you repay me? Don't you have any self morals." Angel took a threatening step towards Whistler. "Ok, I was sent here cause I was going to tell you that in the next week, you'll get a visitor. I can't tell you who cause then something happens. They didn't tell me what, but from their menacing tone, I'm pretty sure it's bad. Anyway, the thing I was going to tell you, I can't now because you and your honey had to get in a fight. Kid, for this to work, you two have to be together. If you aren't, then it can all go down badly. And if it goes down badly, then you two suffer the most." Angel walked over to the couch and sat down on it. Running his hands through his hair, he asked, "How am I supposed to fix it? She's mad at me. She thinks that I want Faith." "Do you?" "Of course not. You know that." "And so does she. In her soul, she knows that you would never want Faith, but humans are funny things, Angel. A lot different than we are. They tend to believe the images they create for themselves. If the correct image is created in a human's mind, they tend to stick to that, until something comes along with better evidence to contradict it. That's what you need to do, my boy. You need to show Buffy that you would never touch Faith, let alone think about her. You need to show Buffy that no one but her exists in your world."
Angel looked up and was about to ask him how he was supposed to do that, but Whistler had vanished. "He always does that when I need him. Stupid demon." Angel muttered. Getting up, Angel sighed. "How am I ever going to do this?" he asked himself. He walked into the bathroom. "I might as well take a shower and then get to planning." *~* Buffy walked to Giles' house. It was the only place she knew where to go. She shivered and pulled herself further into her jacket. It was one of the warmest nights in Sunnydale, but she felt so cold. She hated fighting with Angel. Did she really have a reason to be mad? He was telling the truth, wasn't he? She didn't know anymore. Part of her was screaming at her she was wrong and to go back to him. And the other part was telling her to stay away. To leave and to never come back. She didn't know which part to listen to. She just wanted comfort. She gently knocked on his door. When he answered the door, he was slightly ruffled. She could tell that he had been sleeping. "Buffy? What are you doing?" Buffy suddenly became very uncomfortable. "uh, maybe I should have come here. I'm just gonna go. I'm sorry for bothering you." She turned to leave, but Giles grabbed her arm and turned her around. "Buffy? What is it?" He saw her eyes were red from crying. She immediately fell into his arms and sobbed. He listened as she muttered the entire storing to him. "I love him, Giles. I really do, and I know I want to spend the rest of my life with him. But I don't know if I trust him." By now, Giles had gotten Buffy to the couch where he sat her and gave her a warm cup of tea. "Buffy, did he actually tell you he wanted Faith?" Buffy shifted, "Well, not exactly." "So basically, Faith left a note, saying that her and Angel slept together and you believe him when he says that he didn't sleep with her, but you think he's lying saying he never wanted her?" Buffy looked down. "Well, yeah." "Buffy, you know you mean the world to Angel and that he would do anything for you. Faith has planted something in your mind, and for some reason, you believe her. Why?" "I really don't know, Giles. I'm just confused. I can't go back there tonight. Can I crash here?" "Of course. Take the guestroom. There are clean sheets on the bed and clean towels in the bathroom. You know you're welcome as long as you want." Buffy gave Giles a hug, said her thanks, and slowly made her way up the stairs. "Poor girl. She's only nineteen, but she has to worry about so much." Giles shut off the lights and retreated to his room. *~* Angel tossed and turned. He threw his blankets off and them threw them back on. There was no way he was going to get to sleep. Not when he didn't know where Buffy was. He tried to relax his mind and reach her through the connection their souls have. But when he did, all he saw was black. Nothing but black surrounding him. "Dammit!" he cursed aloud. "Come on, Buffy, let me in." He focused as hard as he could. A flash of light! He was in! "Angel." Buffy's singsong voice called to him. "Angel, where are you?" "Buffy! I'm right here!" Angel yelled back at her. Buffy looked over in his direction and fear passed over her face, "Angel! I can't see you! Where are you? Angel!" "Buffy! Right here, in front of you!" Angel yelled. Why couldn't she see him? What was wrong? "Angel, I'm scared. I can't see you." Buffy sobbed. Behind her, Angel saw a figure. But it was too late. The person grabbed Buffy and stuck a knife at her throat. "Faith," Angel growled. "Let her go." "Angel, what's going on? Help me, please." And Buffy and Faith disappeared. Angel shot right up, his cheeks streaked with tears. "Ohmigod, Buffy. Don't worry honey. I'll save you." Across town, Giles watched as Buffy tossed and turned. He heard her call out to Angel. What are we going to do?he asked himself. *~* Buffy woke the next morning feeling all groggy. She dragged herself into the bathroom. She looked in the mirror at her appearance. She had dark circles under her eyes and her cheeks were stained from crying all night. She slowly slipped off her clothes and turned on the water to the shower. She stepped in and let the warm droplets soothe her. She felt the sobs rack her body before they came. She fell to the floor of the shower, clutching her knees to her body. She covered her face in her hands and cried into her palms. She hated fighting with Angel. She felt like a part of her was missing when she wasn't with him. She felt her soul ache for his touch. She felt like she was dying inside. Composing herself, Buffy stood up and proceeded to wash her hair. She thought about all the good times her and Angel had had. Was it all really worth it? Did she honestly believe that Angel wanted Faith? "What the hell is wrong with you, Summers?" She asked herself allowed. "Angel's your fiancée, he wouldn't be marrying you if you weren't the one he wanted." Buffy sighed. She had really messed up this time. What if this was for good? It couldn't be. Every couple has their fights. It's only normal, right? If it were so normal then why did Buffy want to spend the whole day locked in her bedroom crying?
Noticing she was starting to prune, Buffy climbed out of the shower. She wrapped herself in the robe Giles had set for her in the bathroom and walked back to the guestroom. She was about to start getting dressed when she found a note on the bed. She opened it and read:
Meet me at 7 tonight at the Bronze. Smiling, Buffy knew who it was from. Putting the paper carefully in the envelope, Buffy set it aside and got dressed. *~* When Buffy entered the Bronze that night, she was overcome with the small fear that Angel didn't ask her here to make up. No she thought Everything will be okay She smiled when she saw Angel coming towards her. He didn't say anything, but took her hand and led her to the dance floor. He wrapped his arms around her and whispered in her ear, "I hope I chose the right song." Slightly perplexed, Buffy looked at him, but he only smiled down at her as the music started. As soon as the lyrics started, Buffy knew the song. I like blue eyes, hers are green "Buffy it's true that when I was younger I wanted someone like Faith, but that couldn't be farther from the truth for me know. When Whistler told me about you, I envisioned seeing someone with brown hair past her shoulders with bright blue eyes that sparkled in the sunlight. And as for height, I had always wanted someone tall." Angel took an unneeded breath and continued. "That was all true until I saw you that afternoon when you were called. I immediately fell in love with you the moment I saw you. The way your eyes shine in the moonlight and light up every time I look at you captivate me. The way your hair, in all it's golden locks radiate the glory of the sun. Why do I need sun when I have you?" "And I love the way when I stand next to you, I tower over you. It gives me the feeling that I can protect you from anything. I love the way we abstract each other. You're light and tiny. I'm dark and tall. It's a perfect opposite." A tear slipped down Buffy's check at Angel's beautiful words. She started to say something, but he put his index finger on her lips. "Shh, not yet, there's more."
So it took me by complete surprise "You're more Buffy. More than anything I ever thought I deserved. More than anyone ever will." No, it wasn't at first site
"There's only one thing about this song that doesn't fit. It was love at first site. From the minute I met you, I loved you. I wanted to run up to you and hold you that afternoon. And when you staked your first vamp, I wanted to protect you because you now knew what was out there and that you had to protect everyone else without getting yourself killed. It scares me to think that I may lose you." "When I kiss you, my whole world disappears. Only you and I exist. I can never get enough of you. Your touch brings warmth to my cold body. Your kisses bring sunshine to my dark world. And when we make love, I am the happiest person in the world. It's not just the sex, though it's great. It's the bond that forms between us when we connect. Being with you is my redemption. Being with you is what makes my world complete."
Buffy wrapped her arms tighter around Angel .She tippy-toed up to him and slipped her lips across his. He kept the kiss for a while, and then pulled her head to rest on his chest. They gently swayed to the music as the lyrics continued. So it took me by complete surprise More than I dreamed of So it took me by complete surprise "I love you Buffy Summers. I couldn't be more honored to be engaged to you and to one day call you my wife." "I love you too Angel. Always." "Always and forever." And he kissed her. The kiss was so passionate, the world around them stopped and no one but them existed to be. As the kiss ended, the looked up and noticed that in fact the patrons of the Bronze were frozen in place. They looked around. Everyone was in the position they were five minutes ago. "Angel?" Buffy asked unsure. Before them came a bright light. "Hello, warriors." A female voice said. "Who are you?" Angel asked. "I am Destiny. Before you ask what I'm doing here. Let me explain. Everyone has a soulmate. Someone they are meant to be with. But not everyone gets that person. When someone meets theirs, we try our best to keep them together. But first, we have to make sure that their love is real, not just an infatuation. You have proven over a hundred times that your love will go one, no matter what is thrown at you. So in return, we have a gift for you. Angel, you are granted your humanity. Go out, have some fun, tan. And Buffy, you are released from your duty. We know that being the Slayer stood in the way of many opportunities for you. You are here by retired. Take up another job if you want. There's just one thing. The new slayer is being called right now, and since you are the most successful slayer in history, we want you to train her. You were brought up differently than any other slayer, and we believe that your teachings made you most successful. We are enrolling you and all of your friends in the watcher's council if they will accept. Do you two accept your new duties?" "Yes," Angel and Buffy said at the same time. "Good. It is done. Be seeing you, warriors." With that she was gone and the Bronze returned to it's original state. Buffy and Angel looked at each other and started to laugh. They did it! They survived! Together forever.

Not like the woman of my dreams
And her hair's not quite as long as I had planned
Five foot three isn't tall
She's not the girl I pictured at all
In those paint by number fantasies I've had
When my heart got lost in those deep green eyes
She's not at all what I was looking for
She's more
But the moment I looked twice
I saw the woman I was born to love
Her laughter fills my soul
And when I hold her I don't wanna let go
When it comes to her I can't get enough
When my heart got lost in those deep green eyes
She's not at all what I was looking for
She's more
More than any man deserves
I couldn't ask for more
Than a love like hers
When my heart got lost in those deep green eyes
She's not at all what I was looking for
She's more
