SUMMARY: Several years from now, Buffy runs into Angel and finds that he's
changed
Denny's was cheap enough for Buffy to afford. It wasn't somewhere she
wanted to be, or even a place where she enjoyed the food, but they had a
$3.95 sandwich special that came with hot tea and fries, and today, that
would have to be enough.
Demon-search road trips had gotten old when she turned nineteen.
Stressful at twenty. Now at twenty-three, she was sick and tired of being a
Slayer. There wasn't a week that passed without her contemplating suicide
just to get out of the gig, but then she'd always hear Giles' voice in her
head reminding her that some poor sixteen-year-old would get the job instead,
and she'd decide to stick it out another week.
Sighing, she put the menu back on the shelf and headed towards a table in
the back.
That's when she saw him.
Sitting in the middle of the restaurant, sunlight shining on his back,
eating heartily.
"Angel?" she asked, walking over to him, half-shocked, half-scared, one
hundred percent pissed.
Everytime our eyes meet
"Hi, Buffy," he smiled.
"You're eating." she stated.
"You sound surprised." he took another bite of his sandwich.
"Food," she added, still in shock.
Angel smiled and gave Buffy his hand. She gasped when she touched him.
Baby, when you touch me
"You're human," she whispered.
He smiled and nodded. "Sit down, Buffy. It's time we had a talk."
I've never been this sure
She sat down, put her bag on the spare seat between them and looked at
him. "Um, you wanna start somewhere?" she asked. "Like the beginning?"
The waitress appeared and smiled. "Can I get you anything?" she asked
Buffy.
"Vallium," she breathed. "And a strong drink."
"Bring us two peanut butter milkshakes and a plate of onion rings," Angel
ordered. The waitress left and Buffy snorted.
"Still think you can plan my life," she muttered.
"How've you been?" Angel asked her.
"I was all right until a few minutes ago." she said without looking at
him. She knew if she looked, it would all be over.
"I know you're in shock."
"Shock?? Shock?!?!? I'm completely freaking out!" she shouted. "This
is important, and you kept it from me!! God, Angel, I have been waiting for
- what, four years now? - to see you and when I finally do, I get this."
I can hear your thoughts
"Buffy," he tried to hush her but she wouldn't have it.
"Don't 'Buffy' me. You lost that privilege a long time ago."
"I deserve that," he said, sitting back in his chair.
"You're right," Buffy agreed. "You do. And alot worse!" she sighed,
annoyed, and took a sip of his lemonade. Then she frowned. "I hate this
song."
Every little thing that you do
"You'd better start talking," Buffy warned when the waitress brought
their "food". She took a bite out of Angel's sandwich and met his eyes.
"Or, I'm walking."
He took a deep breath and tried to decide where to begin. "It started
over four years ago. I stole this scroll from Wolfram and Hart but I didn't
really know why. It contained several ancient prophecies....Giles would
probably like it alot, and--"
"This story is going to be long, huh?" Buffy asked. "Waitress!" she
flogged her down. "Bring me a bowl of French onion soup and some mozzarella
sticks."
"After the building was blown up, Wesley took to studying the scroll more
fiercely. He discovered that the passage about me said I would--"
"Evolve to be human," Buffy whispered. Everything was coming together in
her mind now.
"How did you know that?" Angel asked.
"Giles. He found this prophecy a year or so ago. I didn't think
anything of it 'cause I didn't know it was about you." she looked him in the
eye. "We've lost so much time," she whispered.
"I shouldn't have kept this from you," Angel said.
"No, you shouldn't have," Buffy took an onion ring off the plate and
folded it so she could eat it all in one bite. "But you can't change it. We
can't go back."
"Buffy, will you do me a favor?" he asked after an awkward moment of
silence passed.
"What is it?"
"I want you to dance with me."
She almost said no, but when she looked at his eyes, so lost and alone,
and his bottom lip, which was quivering, she agreed. She placed her hand in
his and stood up, ignoring the stares they got from customers and staff. He
moved her closer to the jukebox and they swayed in time to the music.
The smell of your skin
Your hair all around me
"I've missed this," Buffy admitted to him, forgetting that she was
supposed to hate every bone in his body for keeping this from her.
"Me too," he said, running a hand through her hair. It was shorter, the
way it was when they were first in love, and he preferred it like that. Made
her look older, more sophisticated.
Beautiful.
Oh it feels like the first time
Buffy felt her stomach growling when she saw the waitress deliver her
dinner to their table. She pulled Angel back and he sat down with her,
watching his love eat. When she finished, she went to the bathroom and when
she returned, he was grinning.
"What?" she asked, curious.
"Nothing," he said.
The that song started again.
"Angel," she warned. "I told you I don't like this song."
"I know," he smirked. "But listen to the words."
She closed her eyes and humoured him.
Every little thing that you do
Buffy opened her eyes when the song ended, afraid that Angel would be
gone. He was sitting across from her, sunglasses over his beautiful eyes. "I'm heading out," he said. "Where?" she asked. "You don't exactly live in Savannah." "Neither do you," he pointed out. Buffy sighed. "You first, you're the guilty one here." "Point taken, Buffy. I'm delivering a message to Cordelia's mother." "Cordy's mother lives in Savannah?!" Buffy demanded. "She works here. For the mayor." Buffy stifled a laugh. "I wasn't expecting that. Unless by working for
him, you mean--" "Buffy!" Angel gave her a Look. "I just figured maybe Cor takes after her mother, that's all." "Not funny." "Is her divorce final yet?" "Next week." "How's Allannah taking it?" "She's doing great, surprisingly. She loves Cordelia's apartment, loves Dennis, she's very happy." "That's good. I'm glad for her." "You still haven't told me what you're doing here." Angel reminded her. Damn, Buffy thought. I almost got away without saying a word. "Buffy." She sighed. "I'm here to catch a demon, Angel. Happy now?"
"No, just relieved. For a minute, I thought you were here to meet a
boyfriend." "I don't have a boyfriend." she muttered. "Where is that waitress with
my check?" "I took care of it for you." "You didn't have to do that, Angel." "I know, but I did it anyway. Now. Where are you headed?" "My hotel. To sleep."
"And then?" "And then I go out and I kill the demon." "Want a little company?" he asked, smiling. "Sure," she smiled back. "Why not?"
***** The park where Henta the demon was hiding reminded Buffy of Sunnydale.
Traipsing around with Angel in the dark reminded her of high school, and the
way his duster flew behind him reminded her of kissing him.
God, she wanted to kiss him.
She wanted to undress him too, and fuck his brains out, but one thing at
a time. "You know Buffy," Angel began. "We should probably--"
Buffy's eyes went wide all of a sudden. "Angel, behind you!" she
screamed. He ducked just in time for Buffy to leap at the demon. Henta rolled
around on the ground with the Slayer for a minute, then hopped to her feet.
Buffy followed and kicked her a few times. She pinned her to the tree and
snapped her neck before anything else could go on. "Not as stealthy as you used to be," Buffy muttered as she helped Angel up. "Human weakness isn't something I've embraced," he admitted. "Can I ask you something?" "No," Buffy said firmly. "I've got something to tell you." "What?" he asked, anxious. "I love you." Before Angel could react, Buffy charged at him, knocking their bodies to the ground as they kissed. They furiously undressed and made love in the middle of the park while an elderly couple walked by and thought they were a couple of dogs mating. When they dressed, Angel took Buffy back to his place, and the next
morning, she bought him a present. The CD with their new song on it, which
they made love to every night until their wedding a month later. Send feedback to Isa
