AUTHOR'S NOTES: Huh. I thought I wasn't gonna write anymore fanfic. Huh.

"Buffy, look out!"

She ducked instead, and it worked to her advantage. The vampire trying to kill her wound up tripping over her body and fell on a rock, hitting her head. While dazed, Buffy drove the stake home in her chest and stood up, relieved.

"You done?" she asked Angel.

"For now. Four of them are dust, but I think there's four more."

"And we're the lucky ones who get to find them." Buffy started towards the nearest cemetery and Angel hurried to catch up with her.

"You okay?" he asked after a minute. She wasn't looking or speaking to him.

"Fine." Buffy walked another block, then she said, "I don't need you here parenting me, you know. I'm fine on my own, ask Giles."

"I'm not parenting you," Angel said quickly. "I'm just--"

"What?" Buffy stopped walking and glared at him. Angel was very aware of the stake still in her hand. "What were you gonna say?"

"I'm just here," he finally answered. "For you."

"How comforting," she remarked sarcastically.

"You're here for me," Buffy began walking again. "Nice."

"You're mad."

"No," Buffy pulled a nail file from her jacket pile and began sharpening the tip of her stake with it.

"If you're mad at me, I wish you'd tell me why so we could talk about it." Angel let Buffy stay one step ahead of him, just in case. Things could get dangerous with the stake getting sharper and sharper by the minute.

"I'm not mad," she rubbed the file against the stake so hard, the tip broke off, leaving a jagged but dull end behind.

"That'll still work," Angel told her.

"Thanks for the tip," Buffy tossed the stake in a trash can and took a second one out of her belt loop, putting the nail file away since she didn't have any extra stakes on her. When she noticed how he was looking at her, she said, "I'm a perfectionist."

Angel followed as she walked, waiting for her to say something.

"Are you mad?" he finally asked.

Buffy didn't answer him.

"You're mad."

"I'm not mad," she turned around and looked at him. "I'm just--" Buffy stopped and drove a stake through Angel's arm. It went directly through the Angel's shoulder and into the heart of the vampire behind him, ready to pounce.

"Sorry," she yanked it out and threw it back into her belt loop. "I went with my instincts."

"Your instincts?"

"Uh-huh," she started walking again.

"Come on, Buffy, give me a hint. Do you want me to leave you alone?" Angel sounded upset. It almost made Buffy feel bad.

Almost.

"'Cause if you do," he went on, "I'll--"

"No," she admitted. "I would never want that."

"Then you gotta give me something to work with Buffy, 'cause I'm lost."

"First we fight," Buffy pulled her stake out and began fighting with the twin of the female vamp she killed earlier. "Then we talk."

"Well," Buffy sat on a park bench and rubbed her knee. "That was painful."

"You okay?" Angel stood in front of her, unsure of whether or not he should sit down.

"No," she stretched her leg out and winced. "But I will be."

"When?" he asked, knowing as soon as he said it that it was a mistake.

She met his eyes and he could tell she was trying not to smile. "When you kiss me."

"Kiss you?" he sat down beside her and folded his hands, nervous. He couldn't remember the last time he'd been nervous. It had to have been the first time he saw Darla, but he was so drunk that night, he couldn't be sure.

"What, does that seem so far-fetched that the idea of it throws you off?" Buffy snapped.

"No, it's just--"

"Just what?"

"I want it to be perfect."

Buffy's resolve was melting. "I'm listening."

"I want it to be perfect, and I don't know if we're gonna have the greatest first kiss out here surrounded by grave markers and vampires waiting to rise."

"Forget all that," Buffy scooted closer to him. "Look up. There's the star my mom had named after me when I was born. That those two," she pointed and leaned her head on his shoulder, "Are named Angel, after you."

"Why would I have two of them?" he asked.

"Long story," Buffy said. "Kiss me and I'll tell you later."

"Wow," Buffy echoed when the kiss was over. She opened her eyes and saw sunshine peeking through her curtains. Cursing, she turned off her alarm clock and rolled over in bed. She knew that eventually, the time would come with Angel, and for now, she was content to kiss him in her dreams.
